Ford thinks ‘Stang owners (at times) want quiet V8s

One of the (many) reasons to opt for the 5,0-litre V8-powered Ford Mustang over its 2,3-litre EcoBoost sibling is the sound. But the Detroit automaker says the facelifted version of the eight-cylinder model will be available with something called “Good Neighbour Mode”, which mutes all that aural goodness.

The new feature will allow drivers to keep engine sound “at a minimum” when they wish to.

While many sportscars offer “active exhaust systems”, Ford says the updated Mustang’s “Quiet Start” function is the first to allow scheduling of times. Using steering wheel-mounted thumb controls, the driver can toggle through a menu in the instrument cluster (see the video below) to select when they want to fire up their Mustang GT without sharing the V8 rumble with the neighbours.

For example, Ford says, between 8 pm and 7 am, drivers can keep the peace by scheduling their car to start, minus the trademark roar.

The feature will be part of the active valve performance exhaust system on the new Mustang GT, which alters exhaust volumes between Normal, Sport and Track modes.

“Active valve performance exhaust gives Mustang owners the best of both worlds – that classic Mustang sound, and the ability to not wake up your neighbours when you leave the house early in the morning or arrive home late at night,” said Matt Flis, Ford exhaust development engineer.

“When sounds get up into the upper-70-decibel range, that’s typically about when they start to bother people. With Quiet Start activated, the decibel level of the new Mustang GT drops by about 10 decibels, to a much more comfortable 72 decibels – about the level of a household dishwasher,” he added.

EU-spec

Ford revealed the new Ford Mustang for Europe - delivering sleek new styling, sophisticated engine and suspension upgrades, advanced driver assistance technologies and more customisation options for the iconic sports car.

The instantly-recognisable, powerful Mustang profile now delivers a sleeker, more athletic appearance, enhanced with LED lighting technology, and a choice of 11 bold exterior colours and new alloy wheel options. The new Mustang is anticipated to be the fastest accelerating ever, with an enhanced 5.0â€'litre V8 engine that offers an anticipated 450 PS, combining with Ford's new 10â€'speed automatic transmission.

Tuned to match European driving expectations, Mustang's fun-to-drive character is optimised with sophisticated new MagneRide adjustable suspension and selectable Drive Modes, including a new customisable My Mode option. A new Active Valve Performance Exhaust even delivers an innovative Good Neighbour Mode for early-morning or late-night driving.

Ford Mustang driver assistance technologies including Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection and Lane Keeping Aid enhance the driving experience with greater peace-of-mind. A contemporary, upscale interior features soft-touch materials and a 12-inch all-digital instrument cluster for a superior occupant experience.

"Europe's passion for Mustang has proven even greater than we imagined - almost 30,000 Mustangs are already bringing one of the most iconic sights in motoring to the continent's streets," said Steven Armstrong, group vice president and president, Europe Middle East and Africa, Ford Motor Company. "There are few cars on the road that can deliver such a combination of heritage, style and performance to such a wide audience. The new Ford Mustang offers the most compelling package yet."

Unmistakably Mustang

The exterior of the new Ford Mustang delivers a sleeker, more athletic appearance while retaining the instantly-recognisable character honed through more than 50 years of production. The bonnet profile is now lower with integrated air vents, combined with a revised lower grille design to give the Mustang a sharper, more aggressive face, while improving aerodynamics.

The Ford Mustang's dramatic rear-end design is further enhanced with a re-modelled bumper and diffuser element, accommodating standard quad-tailpipes for the 5.0-litre V8 model that testify to the power and performance available. In addition, Mustang is now offered with a new optional boot spoiler for an even sportier profile.

Crisp, clear and energy-efficient, Mustang's headlights, daytime running lights, indicators and iconic three-dimensional tri-bar tail lights now all feature LED technology as standard for Mustang models in Europe, with LED foglights also available. The front headlight bezels also have been restyled to reflect the trapezoidal shape of the upper grille.

A wider range of customisation options will enable Mustang customers in Europe to make even more of a statement. Three bold, dynamic new metallic paint colours are available - Kona Blue, Orange Fury and Royal Crimson. New 19-inch forged alloy wheels are offered in multiple finishes each with a unique character, including Nickel, Ebony Black and Polished Aluminium.

The new Ford Mustang interior delivers a more premium feel. Soft touch materials now feature for the door linings and the door handles are finished in aluminium. The centre console features a new hand-stitched, soft-touch wrap, finished with stitching in a contrast colour for a more dynamic and upscale feel.

Leather-trimmed, heated and cooled seats, and a heated steering wheel are also offered across the line-up for the first time for ultimate comfort. Right-hand drive customers can now also opt for the leather Recaro racing seat option in Ebony Black leather.

Ultimate performance

Exhilarating performance and a fun-to-drive experience have been at the heart of the Mustang's DNA since the first model was launched in 1964. New powertrain, chassis and technology enhancements enable the new Mustang to deliver the most rewarding driving experience yet.

Ford's 5.0-litre V8 engine has been further developed to deliver more power and a higher rev-limit than ever before. Anticipated peak power of 450 PS is supported by the introduction of Ford's new dual-fuel, high-pressure direct injection and low-pressure port fuel injection system, which also increases low-end torque.

The new Ford Mustang 2.3-litre EcoBoost delivers 290 PS, and offers a more responsive and engaging driving experience thanks to a transient overboost function for the turbocharger - triggered under heavy acceleration to provide an extra burst of boost following each up-shift - and Ford's new 10â€'speed transmission.

The advanced new 10-speed automatic transmission offers greater fuel efficiency, and improved acceleration. The gearbox's electronic control system enables settings that optimise performance for Drive Modes, and real-time adaptive shift-scheduling allows the transmission to adapt to changing conditions and select the right gear in any situation - from coast-road cruising to the drag-strip. Steering wheel-mounted paddles-shifters allow drivers maximum control.

"Typically, when you shift gears, you give up time," said Matthias Tonn, Mustang chief programme engineer, Ford of Europe. "The Mustang's new 10-speed transmission enables the engine to deliver peak power and torque while up-shifting, for faster acceleration and seamless performance. We expect the result to be our fastest accelerating Ford Mustang yet."

Ford's six-speed manual gearbox is enhanced to manage the power of the 5.0-litre V8 engine with a twin-disc clutch and dual-mass flywheel, for greater durability and quicker gear changes. The engine delivers Launch Control as standard for maximum traction and consistent standing starts. Electronic Line Lock that applies only the front brakes, allowing the driver to spin the rear wheels and warm the tyres while stationary, is now standard with the 2.3â€'litre EcoBoost engine, in addition to the 5.0â€'litre V8 - helping achieve optimised standing start performance.

Ford engineers have further optimised Ford Mustang's driving dynamics to deliver the most engaging driving experience yet. Recalibrated shock absorbers improve stability through corners, and rear suspension is stiffened with a cross-axis joint that reduces unwanted movement at each corner that can lead to body flex. Thicker anti-roll bars also better control body-roll for sharper handling.

A new optional MagneRide Damping System can deliver a lightning-quick response to changing road conditions. A unique fluid inside the damper can be electronically stimulated to offer higher or lower damping resistance, depending on the driving scenario. Sensors monitor conditions one thousand times per second to ensure optimum handling performance.

Two new Drive Modes are now offered to help drivers match electronic stability control, throttle response, automatic gear-shift patterns, steering and Active Valve Performance Exhaust settings to the driving scenario. In addition to Normal, Sport, Track and Snow/Wet Modes:

Drag Strip Mode optimises performance for maximum acceleration standing starts and quarter-mile performance at dedicated drag racing strips
My Mode enables drivers to select their own preferred settings for performance, dynamics and exhaust sound
New Active Valve Performance Exhaust technology means drivers can for the first time adjust the intensity of the Mustang's exhaust note to suit their mood and the driving scenario. The innovative Good Neighbour Mode can be programmed to automatically limit the exhaust's noise output at pre-programmed times of the day to avoid disturbing neighbours, not least when firing up the legendary 5.0-litre V8 early in the morning.

Smart tech for safety and convenience

A customisable, all-digital, 12-inch LCD instrument cluster will deliver information displays optimised to match the selected Drive Mode - similar to the Ford GT supercar - helping drivers get the most from every driving experience. The cluster configuration will automatically change depending on Drive Mode, and can be programmed by the driver to display a range of gauges in one of seven colours. Drivers of Mustangs equipped with the 12-inch display will see an industry-first, video-game-style animation when the Electric Line Lock feature is activated.

The new Ford Mustang also features Ford's SYNC 3 communications and entertainment system, which allows drivers to control their connected smartphones, audio, navigation, and climate functions with conversational voice commands, and by using pinch and swipe gestures on the central 8-inch touch screen. The system is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Deliveries of the new Ford Mustang for customers in Europe will begin in 2018.

2018 Ford Mustang revealed with comprehensive updates

Ford has given the 2018 Mustang extensive tweaks for the European market, including a power hike for the V8 and power cut for the 2.3-litre Ecoboost

The Ford Mustang has been updated for the European market, with tweaks to the engine, styling, suspension, interior and exhaust all but transforming the car for the 2018 model year.

Under the bonnet, both the 5.0-litre V8 and 2.3-litre Ecoboost engines have been tweaked, with the former boosted to 444bhp from the pre-facelift car’s 410bhp. This will also improve the car’s acceleration and top speed from the current model's 4.8sec and 155mph. The 2.3-litre engine has been downgraded to 286bhp from the current car’s 313bhp.

The 5.0-litre's performance boost is achieved through a higher redline, along with Ford’s dual-fuel high-pressure direct injection and low-pressure port injection. Ford claims that torque is improved without providing a figure, but anticipates that it’ll be the fastest-accelerating Mustang yet.

Ford claims that the lower power of the 2.3 Ecoboost is due to increased back pressure within the exhaust, from the addition of a gas particulate filter to comply with Euro 6.2 emissions requirements. Performance is not affected, the brand says, due to the addition of an overboost function and Ford’s new 10-speed automatic gearbox being available with both engines. Ford claims that both acceleration and efficiency are improved with the new 'box, although drivers can choose gears with paddle shifters, while the six-speed manual is still available, now with a twin-disc clutch and dual-mass flywheel.

In addition, the 2.3-litre Ecoboost engine now has Ford’s Electronic Line Lock, which allows owners to perform burnouts to warm their car’s tyres and features a video game-like graphic when the mode is selected, if a new 12.0in LCD instrument display is selected.

That display is among a raft of changes to the interior, including a more generous use of soft-touch plastics on the centre console and doors. Equipment has been updated to include LED lights as standard, and adaptive cruise control is available. A lane departure warning, lane keeping aid and other safety systems are expected to improve on the Mustang’s two-star Euro NCAP safety rating, which was the subject of controversy when it was tested under the ever-more stringent safety criteria.

The Mustang has been given Ford’s Magneride dampers as an option, which the brand claims will improve the car’s ride. The standard shock absorbers have also been improved to give better stability around corners, while bolstered anti-roll bars diminish body roll.

On the outside, Ford has lowered the bonnet and integrated air vents into it, while the grille has been redesigned into a slimmer, sleeker unit. The rear of the car has been tweaked, with a redesigned bumper and diffuser. The design of the car was leaked back in January, when a promotional video was published ahead of schedule for the car’s release in the US.

There are three new colours available; shades of blue, orange and red have been added to the Mustang’s unusually bright colour palette. There’s a new 19in alloy wheel design, available in three finishes.

Drivers can select three extra drive mode on the new Mustang. In addition to Normal, Sport, Track and Snow/Wet, drivers can choose Drag Strip mode for fast launches and Good Neighbour mode that quiets the exhaust for a more neighbour-friendly engine note when driving late at night or early in the morning. My Mode allows drivers to customise and select their own drive mode.

Deliveries of the updated Mustang will commence in 2018; UK prices are expected be announced towards the end of the year, while the first cars will be on UK roads in the second quarter of 2018.

FORD REVEALS RETRO STYLING PACK FOR 2018 MUSTANG

Ford has revealed a new retro “Pony Package” conceived for the facelifted Mustang.

Set to be available for EcoBoost variants only, the styling package gives a nod to the nameplate’s heritage with its grille-mounted “pony-in-corral” chrome badge design.

This badge design first appeared on the Mustang back in the mid-1960s, when the car was still in its concept phase. And it has appeared in various forms since, including as part of an anniversary package in 2015.

In addition to the pony-in-corral grille badge, the package includes 19-inch polished alloys, bright beltline and window trim (for the fastback model), “premium” floor mats with Ebony embroidered pony logos, stripes on the lower body flanks and a tri-bar pony badge on the rear.

Ford Mustang GT Performance Pack Level 2 (2018)

Evenings in the garage. Weekends at the track. Gearheads everywhere can appreciate the extra time and effort the Mustang team took to quickly prototype and hone the Performance Pack Level 2 for the new 2018 Ford Mustang GT.

"A passion to create something special is what really drove this project," said Tom Barnes, Mustang vehicle engineering manager. "And that really showed in the off-the-clock way we went about doing our work."

Longtime tire and wheel engineer Chauncy Eggleston led development of unique 19-inch wheels that help provide notable steering and handling response improvements. Mustang veteran Jonathan Gesek, former aerodynamics specialist at NASA and now with Ford's aerodynamics group, spearheaded development of a high-performance front splitter and rear spoiler. And Jamie Cullen, Ford supervisor for vehicle dynamics development, led road test efforts to ensure the car delivers ultra-responsive steering, braking and handling performance.

The result of their covert efforts is available to order now and will reach North American showrooms this spring when pony car enthusiasts can get the new 2018 Ford Mustang GT with Performance Pack Level 2, a collection of drive-enhancing components designed for - and by - people who love the thrill of taking the wheel of a true performance car.

"It will just beg you to go faster," said Cullen. "The car has lightning-quick response and never gives up grip."

Performance Pack Level 2 includes all of the features of Performance Pack Level 1 - unique chassis and antilock brake tuning, unique stability control and electric power-assisted steering, Brembo six-piston front brake calipers with larger rotors, a k-brace, larger radiator, silver-painted strut tower brace and a TORSEN rear differential with 3.73 axle ratio.

It's highlighted by a lower stance, a redesigned front splitter and rear spoiler, and 305/30/R19 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires wrapped around split-fitment aluminum wheels - 19x10.5-inch front and 19x11-inch rear.

The tires, 1.5 inches wider than those found with Performance Pack Level 1, provide a firmer grip, and work with a retuned chassis to put the car more than a half-inch closer to the ground. The package is available exclusively with a manual transmission.

Custom tuned MagneRide dampers and quicker steering calibration provide better response. Other improvements over Performance Pack Level 1 equipment include a 67 percent stiffer rear stabilizer bar, a 12 percent stiffer front stabilizer bar, 20 percent stiffer front springs and rear springs that are 13 percent stiffer, all of which contribute to a more stable ride around corners with less body roll.

Working a little moonlight magic

Critical to the success of the package is improved aerodynamics scores, which the team achieved by adding larger and lower front splitter and redesigned rear spoiler.

Gesek said the after-hours approach team members took to developing the Ford Mustang GT Performance Pack Level 2 was so much fun because they set out to create their dream car.

"Our targets were aggressive," he said, "and we nailed them."

Using the splitter from the famed Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca as a benchmark, Mustang engineers attached the piece to the underside of the front to fan out as much as 3 inches around the corners of the Ford Mustang GT. It creates about 24 pounds of downforce at 80 mph, helping give the car its exceptional grip. To balance the downforce, a subtle, redesigned rear spoiler stretches across the decklid.

To assist in the team's innovative approach to creating the new Performance Pack, parts such as the rear spoiler were rapid-prototyped using a 3D printer. The process enabled faster turnaround times, complementing the trial-and-error nature of the project.

The only visual cues on a car outfitted with the new Performance Pack Level 2 are black detailing on the splitter and spoiler, the tire spat on the back edge of the rear wheel wells and the 10-spoke Dark Tarnish wheels, which are exclusive. Customers who opt for Performance Pack Level 2 have a unique opportunity to select Recaro seats in either leather or cloth to help stay firmly planted while cornering.

Ford takes Mustang GT Performance Pack to 'Level 2'

The Ford Mustang, which was facelifted earlier this year, can be a bit of a handful through the corners when fitted with the brand’s naturally aspirated 5,0-litre V8. But now the “Performance Pack Level 2” for the Mustang GT has been detailed, and it includes a few items to make the vehicle sharper through the bends.

The package includes an aero kit that consists of a front splitter and rear spoiler developed by former NASA aerodynamic specialist, Jonathan Gesek, as well as a set of 19-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Cup 2 tyres.

The brand’s MagnaRide adaptive suspension and quicker steering are also part of the package, along with a 67% increase in stiffness for the rear and 12% increase for the front stabilisation bars. The front and rear springs, meanwhile, have been stiffened by 20% and 13%, respectively.

With Performance Pack Level 2, customers will also have the option of fitting a set of Recaro bucket seats upholstered in either cloth or leather.

All of the bits and bobs from Performance Pack Level 1 are thrown in as well, including mild revisions to the chassis, stability control and ABS, six-piston front Brembo brake calipers, a K-brace (replacing the rear seats), a larger radiator and a Torsen rear differential with a 3,73 axle ratio.

The updated Mustang has not yet been officially confirmed for South Africa, but given its local popularity – Ford SA has sold 238 units over the past three months – it’s surely merely a question of when.

New Shelby Mustang GT500 expected to top 320km/h

Nobody outside of Ford’s skunk works has seen the 2019 Shelby Mustang GT500 without heavy camouflage, and the Blue Oval’s PR mavens are keeping their lips firmly zipped ahead of the car’s anticipated reveal at the upcoming Detroit Motor Show, but some intriguing details have emerged from an unlikely source.

Service bulletins.

Ford’s OEM service portal (that’s where your friendly local Ford technician goes for information on how to service the new models) already has some pages pertaining to the new GT500 - including a procedure for speedometer verification which reveals that the speedometer not only reads to 340km/h, but that the GT has a top speed of more than 320km/h, making it the second fastest street-legal Ford yet, after the Ford GT.

Wiring diagrams for the new model indicate a 5.2-litre V8 - apparently codenamed ‘Predator’ - with a specially developed 2.6-litre, belt-driven supercharger, running a traditional cross-plane crankshaft rather than the Euro-style flat-plane crank of the hard-revving, naturally-aspirated 5.2-litre GT350. Either way, insiders are quoting 500kW and 855Nm - hardly in Dodge Hellcat or Corvette ZR-1 territory, but way hotter than the 387kW and 583Nm of the GT350.

Most of the rumours so far have mentioned direct fuel-injection, but Ford cognoscenti have pointed out that the diagrams do not show the hardware - very similar to hat on a common-rail diesel set-up - necessary for direct injection.

10-speed automatic transmission

The wiring diagrams do however, show a torque-convertor mount, not a flywheel, indicating that the GT500 will be made available with an automatic transmission - probably the new 10-speeder jointly developed by Ford and GM for the F-150 Raptor and the Camaro ZL1.

Another bulletin warns that the sump of the 2019 GT500 - which is quite likely to be in American dealerships by the end of August 2018 - must be filled with 5W-50 oil, and yet another deals with the brake warning system for the carbon-ceramic discs (if that’s true, it’ll be a first for a Mustang).

The sad news is that there are only three VIN number codes for the 2019 Mustang - the 2.3-litre EcoBoost turbopetrol four, the naturally-aspirated five-litre GT and the new GT500. It would appear that the screamin-demon 5.2-litre GT350 has been dropped.

All of which, of course, is only one step ahead of pure speculation; as soon as we hear any official details from Ford, so will you.

2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of iconic movie "Bullitt" and its fan-favorite San Francisco car chase, Ford introduces the new cool and powerful 2019 Mustang Bullitt.

Third-generation member of the McQueen family, Molly, starred in a special movie of her own introducing the new third-generation Bullitt at the 2018 North American International Auto Show. In the film, Molly races a new Ford Mustang Bullitt through a parking structure battling a Dodge Charger for the final free space.

Helping it win that particular spot was the Bullitt's upgraded 5.0-liter V8 engine that will deliver at least 475 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque, pushing the new Bullitt to a top speed of 163 mph - an 8 mph increase versus the latest Mustang GT.

Special Edition

As a special-edition model due out in summer 2018 - the all-new Ford Mustang Bullitt is equipped with a manual transmission, and the gear shifter features a white cue ball shift knob as a nod to the original. The vehicle packages all Mustang GT Premium and Performance Package content into a vehicle that maintains the original Bullitt's understated persona.

An active valve performance exhaust system is standard with new Black NitroPlate™ exhaust tips, and retuned to give the car a signature burble, as well as new Open Air Induction System and Shelby GT350 intake manifold with 87mm throttle bodies and powertrain control module calibration for optimal performance.

Other standard equipment includes a heated leather steering wheel and a 12-inch all-digital LCD instrument cluster, identical in function to the cluster introduced on 2018 Mustang, but with a unique Bullitt welcome screen that starts in green with an image of the car rather than the pony.

"This new Bullitt is, as Steve McQueen was, effortlessly cool," said Darrell Behmer, Mustang chief designer. "As a designer, it's my favorite Mustang - devoid of stripes, spoilers and badges. It doesn't need to scream about anything - it's just cool."

Exterior paint choices are limited to Shadow Black and the classic Dark Highland Green - as worn in the movie. Other features that pay tribute to the car McQueen drove are subtle chrome accents around the grille and front windows, classic torque thrust 19-inch aluminum wheels, red painted Brembo™ brakes, and a unique black front grille. Inside and out, the vehicle uses minimal badging; only the circular faux gas cap Bullitt logo on the rear center is visible on the exterior.

The leather-trimmed interior features unique green accent stitching on the dashboard, door panels, center console and seats.

Aside from the two exterior paint choices, Ford Mustang Bullitt buyers are limited to three factory-installed options:

Bullitt Electronics Package includes navigation, driver memory seats and mirrors, upgraded sound system and Blind Spot Information System with Cross-Traffic Alert that can alert customers of vehicles detected in difficult-to-see places
MagneRide® semi-active suspension system optimizes driving performance
RECARO® black leather-trimmed seats
"When making a Bullitt, there are certain things it absolutely must have," said Carl Widmann, Mustang chief engineer. "It has to have the right attitude, it has to be unique in some way from a Mustang GT, and more than anything, it has to be bad ass."

That reputation was born after a Mustang GT fastback played a prominent role in the 1968 movie, and most notably in a chase scene that set new standards in filmmaking. The film's nearly 10-minute-long sequence followed McQueen chasing down two hitmen in his Mustang through the streets of San Francisco.

1968 Ford Mustang Bullitt

Two identical 1968 Mustang GT fastbacks were used in the filming of the classic Warner Bros. movie "Bullitt" that debuted in theaters on Oct. 17, 1968. After filming, the cars went their separate ways: the hero vehicle driven by McQueen in the movie was sold by Warner Bros. to a private buyer, and the other - used in many of the jumps during the famous chase scene - was sent to a salvage yard. That jumper vehicle resurfaced in Baja, California, in early 2017, but the other was lost to history. Until now.

Sean Kiernan, owner of the hero vehicle, inherited the car in 2014 from his late father, Robert, who had purchased the vehicle in 1974. To fulfill his family's lifelong dream, Sean contacted Ford and the two parties worked together to reveal his movie star car alongside the all-new 2019 Mustang Bullitt at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

"You know, it was never our intention to keep this car a secret from everybody," Sean said. "It just kind of happened with life. I'm just completely buzzing to join with Ford and the new Bullitt and show this car to the world on one of the biggest stages there is."
