Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Coupe

Mercedes-AMG is updating its S-Class Coupés and Cabriolets with a host of technical and visual highlights. The new-design front end is dominated by the Panamericana radiator grille, which now gives the two-door, luxury-class Performance vehicles an even more independent look. In the S63 4MATIC+ Coupé and Cabriolet the AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine with twin-scroll turbochargers and cylinder deactivation (Coupé) supersedes the previous 5.5-litre V8 biturbo. Despite the smaller displacement, the new engine puts out 450 kW (612 hp) and thus exactly 20 kW (27 hp) more than the preceding model. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission is also new to the Coupé and Cabriolet, as is the fully variable all-wheel drive system AMG Performance 4MATIC+.

At the same time with the new eight-cylinder Coupé and Cabriolet, the top-of-the-range twelve-cylinder S65 Coupé and S65 Cabriolet are being given a visual update with the Panamericana radiator grille. The AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine retains its output of 463 kW (630 hp) and delivers a maximum torque of 1000 Newton metres.

"Having already undertaken major development work on our S-Class Saloon to further enhance driving performance and individuality, we are now making the same changes to the S63 4MATIC+ Coupé and Cabriolet. The extensive modifications are designed to strengthen our leading position in this dream car segment in terms of driving dynamics, performance, equipment and comfort on long journeys. The S65 Coupé and Cabriolet with their high-torque 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine remain the most elite form of the S-Class," stated Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

Exterior: Panamericana radiator grille and front apron with new jet wing

The new AMG S-Class Coupés and Cabriolets are instantly identifiable from the front thanks to the AMG Panamericana radiator grille: the V-shaped cooling air intake harmoniously follows the lines of the headlamp housings and is subdivided by chromed, vertical struts. The front apron resembles a hovering jet wing and is painted in vehicle colour. It is flanked by two large outer air inlets, which are outlined in high-gloss black. The three-dimensional front splitter with its aerodynamically shaped high-sheen chrome edge reduces uplift at the front axle.

The side skirts with three-dimensional inlays in high-sheen chrome give the Coupé and Cabriolet a lower-slung look and generate even more tension in the flanks. Hallmark features of the AMG S-Class models are the large forged light-alloy wheels, measuring 19 inches as standard on the S63 4MATIC+ Coupé and Cabriolet and 20 inches on the S65 Coupé and Cabriolet. The exclusive forged wheels on the V12 Coupés and Cabriolets have an unusual and fascinating design: each of the 16 spokes twists in a special way so that the light-catching contours radiate to the centre of the wheel hub. The effect: The wheel appears larger than its actual dimensions of 8.5 J x 20 at the front and 9.5 J x 20 at the rear. In addition, the ceramic mirror polishing ensure an exclusive look.

As standard, the forged wheels feature a high-quality, bolted and fully integrated wheel bolt cover made of forged aluminium. Its shape is reminiscent of a centre lock as seen in motorsport. The AMG logotype is incorporated into the rim as a design element. Three other forged wheels of the same size are optionally available - two design variants also painted matt black with a high-sheen rim flange.

The powerful rear end of the S63 4MATIC+ and S65 features an updated rear apron with diffuser insert and the redesigned, model-specific twin tailpipes of the AMG exhaust system.

New and exclusive additions to the Coupé and Cabriolet are the OLED (organic light-emitting diode) rear lamps. OLEDs are characterised by their thin-film design, which allows curved surfaces to be created, resulting in totally new light designs. A total of 66 OLEDs (33 left and 33 right) produce an unmistakable light signature, which is combined with a Coming Home function.

Other stand-out features of the AMG S-Class Coupés and Cabriolets include the numerous high-sheen chrome design elements (S65) on the front, sides and rear. These are particularly effective in combination with dark paint colours.

Revised Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe and Cabriolet get new V8 and tweaked styling

The facelifted S-Class Coupé and Cabriolet follow in its saloon sibling's footstep with minor changes inside and out

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled facelifted versions of the S-Class Coupé and Cabriolet less than two years after they were introduced in the UK.

Set to make their public debut at the Frankfurt motor show, the upmarket two-door cars adopt a number of subtle styling changes and new OLED tail-lights. Each tail-light incorporates 66 individual OLEDs, providing a distinctive new light graphic. There is also an updated infotainment system and a revised range of interior trims.

Included in the styling makeover are lightly altered bumpers with added chrome highlights, as well as revised sills and chrome-plated tailpipes that mimick those used by the earlier S65 Coupé and Cabriolet.

The performance-oriented models also receive the latest AMG grille treatment, with vertical louvers replacing the former blade design, as well as a front bumper with larger air ducts for more efficient cooling of the engine bay and front brakes.

Inside, there are three new trim lines, as well as the choice of three new upholstery lines. The S-Class Coupé and Cabriolet’s 12.3in digital instrument cluster has been upgraded with revised graphics and the choice of three new themes: Classic, Sport and Progressive. The Comand infotainment system also gets a software upgrade, allowing it to support 3D topographical map displays and Car-to-X messages, among other functions.

Mercedes has also provided its range-topping coupé and cabriolet models with revised driver assistance systems in the form of Active Distance Control Distronic cruise control and Active Steering Assist functions already brought to the S-Class Saloon.

The starting point for the line-up is now the S450 4Matic Coupé. It retains the same turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine as its predecessor, the S400, with 362bhp and 368lb ft.

Further up, the flagship coupé and cabriolet adopt the latest generation of V8 petrol engines already found in the S-Class Saloon. A twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 in the new S560 4Matic Coupé and Cabriolet models replace the older twin-turbocharged 4.6-litre V8 in the outgoing S500 Coupé and Cabriolet.

The new engine, which features a cylinder shut-off function for added fuel savings in city driving, delivers 13bhp more than the engine it replaces at 462bhp, but the same 516lb ft as before, providing the new S560 4Matic Coupé with a claimed 0-62mph time of 4.6sec and limited 155mph top speed. It has a combined consumption of 35.3mpg and CO2 emissions of 183g/km.

The S63 4Matic Coupé and Cabriolet have also been reworked. They adopt a more heavily tuned version of the twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 used by the S560 4Matic in place of the older twin-turbocharged 5.5-litre V8 used by their predecessors. Power is up by 26bhp to 603bhp, with torque remaining the same as before at 663lb ft.

The new AMG engine channels its drive through a nine-speed version of AMG’s speedshift automatic gearbox and a revised four-wheel-drive system boasting fully variable apportioning of drive to each axle, endowing the 2018 S63 4Matic+ Coupé with a claimed 0-62mph time of 3.5sec and limited 155mph top speed. It has a combined fuel consumption of 30.3mpg and an official CO2 rating of 211g/km.

At the top of the line-up is the S65 Coupé and Cabriolet. As in the S65 Saloon, it retains the same twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre V12 engine. It delivers 621bhp and 737lb ft of torque to provide 0-62mph acceleration in 4.1sec and a limited 155mph top speed. It has a combined fuel consumption of 23.7mpg and CO2 emissions of 279g/km.

All models receive Mercedes’ nine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic gearbox, save for the range-topping S65 Coupé and Cabriolet, which retain the older seven-speed 7G-Tronic automatic owing to their high torque loads. The S560 Cabriolet as well as the S65 Coupé and Cabriolet are sold exclusively with rear-wheel drive. The remaining models all feature 4Matic four-wheel drive.

S-Class Coupé pricing will start from just over £100,000 (around £1000 more than the outgoing model), while the Cabriolet will cost from around £111,000. Coupé and cabriolet models have accounted for around 15% of total S-Class sales in the UK so far this year.

MERCEDES-BENZ S-CLASS COUPE AND CABRIOLET REVISED

Mercedes-Benz has introduced its updated S-Class Coupe and S-Class Cabriolet. This follows shortly after the sedan received a similarly conclusive nip-and-tuck. Accordingly, the two-door variants benefit from an interior and exterior redesign, as well as a revised engine lineup and improved safety features.

Visual revisions include a restyled front bumper and new taillamps, consisting of 66 OLEDs. Joining the catalogue are two new 20-inch AMG-line alloy wheel options.

Major changes have been made to the cabin of the S-Class Coupe and Cabriolet offerings; most notably a new infotainment screen and widescreen cockpit display, while the three-spoke steering wheel with touch-sensitive controls as seen in the S-Class Sedan update has been carried over.

A wide array of updated functionalities has also been filtered through to the Coupe and Cabriolet. These include active distance control, active steering assist and magic body control which balances the car’s body-roll through corners via its airmatic suspension.

The most notable change is the engine line-up which now includes one V6, two V8s and the traditional V12 offering. Only available for the Coupe, the S450 V6 delivers 270 kW and 500 N.m of torque to the all four wheels wheels via a 9G-Tronic torque converter. One-up from this is the S560 which uses AMG’s M177 twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 to deliver 345 kW and 700 N.m to the rear wheels. There’s a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 4,6 seconds for both the S560 Coupe and S560 Cabriolet.

The same V8 is used on the S63 AMG variant, although here it delivers 450 kW and 900 N.m to all four wheels (localised models may be rear-wheel drive only if the S-Class Sedan line is anything to go by) via a nine-speed MCT (derived from the 9G-Tronic). The end result is a 0-100 km/h time of 3,5 seconds, notably faster than the S65 AMG option with its 463 kW/1 000 N.m M279 twin-turbo V12 engine.

It’s not yet clear when the updated S-Class Coupe and Cabriolet range will arrive in SA.

Those grills, though... :erm:

Maybe I'm being picky, but in a car of that size and class (and cost), if you're going to have back seats, at least cater for people with legs.

Merc's S-Class Coupé and Cabrio beefed up for 2018

Having recently given the S-Class saloon a midlife makeover, Mercedes-Benz has turned its attention over to the two-door Coupé and Cabriolet models, which receive a subtle facelift along with updated engines and the latest cabin technologies and gadgets.

Upfront, the two-door models get mildly restyled front bumpers, with AMG versions gaining a ‘Panamericana’ grille with vertical slats, but the biggest talking point is likely to be the new OLED taillights, which are standard. Each light cluster has 66 of these organic light emitting diodes, which appear to float, and which emit a unique lighting pattern. They also treat you to an animated lighting sequence when you lock and unlock the vehicle.

The updated range sees the return of the ‘560’ badge, with the S560 Coupé and S 560 Cabriolet models replacing the previous S500 versions, and although the badge implies an increase in displacement, the 560 actually has a smaller engine, with the previous 4.7-litre twin-turbo making way for Merc’s 4-litre V8, also with two turbos. It does gain 10kW over its predecessor, however, with outputs of 345kW and 700Nm.

Below that, there’s an S450, powered by a 3-litre V6 that’s good for 270kW and 500Nm.

On the AMG front, Affalterbach's version of the 4-litre twin-turbo V8 replaces the 5.5-litre engine in the S63, which gains 20kW in the process to total 450kW, while peak torque remains at 900Nm. The S63 also receives a new Speedshift MCT 9G transmission and a fully-variable AMG 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system.

The S65 versions remain the rear-driven brutes they always were, however, while retaining the familiar 6-litre V12 engine, still rated at 463kW and 1000Nm.

Inside, the S-Class two-door range gets some new trim and colour options, but the big news is the adoption of Merc’s Widescreen Cockpit, which features a pair 31.2cm screens joined under a single glass cover, one serving as an instrument cluster and the other as the central infotainment interface, and offering three driver-selectable styles: Classic, Sporty and Progressive.

The system also features the latest-generation Comand Online, and the vehicle’s voice control has been extended to more vehicle functions (up to 450 in total!), including seat ventilation and massaging, ambient lighting and fragrancing.

Another highlight is the ‘Energising comfort control’ that brings together many of the comfort functions, including massaging, climate, music, fragrance and lighting, and allows occupants to choose from various ‘wellness programmes’ such as Freshness, Warmth, Vitality, Joy, Comfort and (muscle) Training. We dare not ask what ‘Joy’ entails.

The driver assistance gadgets have also been brought up to date as Mercedes slowly marches towards an autonomous driving future, and to that end the Active Steering Assist as well as Distronic and Active Distance Control have been updated and can, for instance, now adjust speed ahead of bends, junctions and roundabouts.

The optional Magic Body Control suspension system with curve tilting function has been beefed up too, offering improved performance and the ability to work at speeds of up to 180km/h.

South African prices and specifications will be announced closer to launch.

New Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe range priced from £104,115

Pricing for coupé, convertible and AMG models revealed; UK deliveries will kick off in early 2018

Mercedes-Benz has opened the order books for its new S-Class Coupé and Cabriolet, with prices starting at £104,115 for the S560 AMG Line, the entry-level model in the UK.

The S560 replaces the outgoing S500 and gets Mercedes' twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine in 462bhp form. AMG's take on the model, the S63, uses a version of the same 4.0-litre V8, but with power raised to 603bhp. Prices for this model, which will rival the upcoming BMW M8 next year, start at £128,015.

The top model on sale is the AMG S65, which is powered by a 604bhp twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre V12 engine and can hit 62mph in 4.1sec. It costs from £189,615.

First deliveries for the cars will begin in early 2018.

Mercedes-Benz S560 Coupé 4Matic 2017 review

Should I buy one?

If you're in the market for a big, luxury grand tourer, you're certainly well-catered for, and while the previous S500 was a good car by all accounts, it left the AMG models to bridge the gap to the Bentleys and Aston Martins of the coupé world.

The changes made to the standard S-Class Coupé have turned that good coupé into a sumptuous mile-muncher with a dash of added potency. Suddenly, this car has moved from the sidelines straight into the thick of the action, all without losing the cossetting refinement its saloon sibling is renowned for.

Mercedes-AMG S63 Cabriolet 2017 review

Should I buy one?

The biggest dilemma here is brand preference. For many, a Bentley or Aston Martin will have more prestige than a Mercedes, which sells in shedloads by comparison.

Nonetheless, it is an exceptionally well-rounded car, exceeding its rivals in offering an impressive blend of comfort, handling and speed.

For those set on a S-Class Cabriolet, it’s also worth considering the cheaper S560. The £116,000-ish car isn’t nearly as sharp but may well be respectable enough to keep the majority of punters happy, and for a lot less money.

Mercedes-Benz S560 Coupe 2018 UK review

Should I buy one?

Depends, I guess, if you’re the sort of person who buys a fairly irrational car for a rational reason; because it’s all the grand touring coupé you really need. As such, I’d say the S560 Coupé makes a fine case for itself — and, as a car to use every day, I’d take one over plenty of more rarefied ‘super GTs’.

But, equally, I could see why driving one — even looking at one parked on your gravel driveway — wouldn’t fill you with quite the same glow you might get from an Aston Martin, Bentley or Maserati.

When BMW’s new 8 Series comes along later this year, it should provide a fairer basis on which to judge this car. But, even then, I’d expect the S560 Coupé to bring a level of maturity, refinement, level-headedness and convenience to the fore that continues to set it apart.
