Updated Golf SV announced. As we know it was an extremely poor seller locally & any chance of this model making it to SA is incredibly slim.

Since mid-2014, the Volkswagen Golf Sportsvan has been the vehicle of choice for those who swear by the Golf yet are looking for extra seat height, flexibility and space. Volkswagen has now refreshed its compact van with an update, which will be seen for the first time at the 2017 IAA International Motor Show in Frankfurt am Main. As for technology, the new VW Golf Sportsvan features items such as three new TSI petrol engines, an expanded range of assistance systems, a new generation of infotainment systems (top system with gesture control) as well as more features in the standard equipment line-up. In terms of appearance, the Golf Sportsvan now makes its mark with its precision-sharpened design.

Following the Golf, Volkswagen is now modernizing the Golf Sportsvan as well with an extensive update. Not only that, the Golf Sportsvan now boasts a more powerful design thanks to new styling refinements. Changes include the newly designed bumpers, new halogen headlights with LED daytime running lights, full-LED headlights in place of xenon headlights, and standard LED tail lights on all versions. Five new alloy wheel types (16, 17, and 18-inch) and colours such as the new Cranberry Red shade of paint round out the updates to the exterior. The interior is enhanced with new decorative trim, fabrics, and leather seats.

It is above all technical innovations that define the Volkswagen Golf Sportsvan's update. Particularly noteworthy in this regard is the Discover Pro radio navigation system with 9.2-inch display and gesture control which is new in the Golf Sportsvan. Conventional buttons and controls are a thing of the past with the Discover Pro; manual control is performed solely via the touchscreen and five capacitive touch buttons along the left border of the new infotainment system.

In addition, Volkswagen is offering an interface to the infotainment system for tablets (and smartphones) in the form of the Media Control app. The app can be used to conveniently control many of the functions of the infotainment system from a tablet - regardless of where the user is sitting in the vehicle. Passengers simply connect their tablet to the Discover Media or Discover Pro infotainment system using the WiFi hotspot.

Volkswagen is additionally also offering the 'Security & Service' package in the VW Golf Sportsvan. It gives the driver access to assistance in a wide range of situations. Highlights include services such as 'Automatic accident notification', 'Roadside service' and 'Service scheduling' (scheduling service with the service garage).

Features providing greater safety and comfort in the Golf Sportsvan include new driver assistance systems, such as Pedestrian Monitoring (part of Front Assist with City Emergency Braking System), Traffic Jam Assist (semi-automated stop-and-go driving up to 60 km/h), Emergency Assist, the latest generations of Park Assist and the proactive occupant protection system, as well as Trailer Assist (including Park Assist), which makes reversing easier when towing.

Three high-tech TSI petrol engines as well as two efficient TDI diesel engines complete the planned drive system line-up. Both powerful TSI engines also come with Active Cylinder Management which deactivates two of the four cylinders in defined operating phases to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

VW reveals updated Golf SV ... but will it come to SA?

Volkswagen has revealed a refreshed version of its Golf SV ahead of the updated model’s official debut in Frankfurt next month.

Known as the Sportsvan in some markets, the MPV version of Wolfsburg’s venerable Golf has been around since the middle of 2014. However, it was just this month discontinued in South Africa, likely due to a lack of interest from the local buying public.

Will this latest model be offered in SA? Well, we reached out to Volkswagen SA who told us that it has no plans to re-introduce the SV badge to South Africa…

VW says the updated Golf SV will be available with three as-yet unspecified new TSI petrol engines (along with two TDI mills), an expanded range of driver assistance systems, the latest generation of infotainment systems (including gesture control on the top-spec model) as well as more features in the standard equipment line-up.

Styling changes, meanwhile, include new bumpers (front and rear), new halogen headlamps with LED daytime running lights, full-LED headlamps in place of xenon versions on some models, and standard LED tail-lights on all models.

In addition, VW says there will be five new alloy wheel designs (in 16-, 17-, and 18-inch forms) as well as fresh colours, such as the new Cranberry Red seen in the accompanying images. The interior, meanwhile, boasts new trim, fabrics and leather seats.

In terms of on-board tech, the facelifted Golf SV gains the option of the brand’s familiar Discover Pro radio navigation system, complete with a 9,2-inch display and gesture control. The Media Control app is also on the cards.

New driver assistance systems include pedestrian monitoring (part of front assist with city emergency braking), traffic jam assist (semi-automated stop-and-go driving up to 60 km/h), emergency assist, the latest generations of park assist and the proactive occupant protection system, as well as trailer assist.

VW TO AXE TOURAN, GOLF SV … AND ADD NEW MODEL?

Volkswagen South Africa recently took the decision to remove the slow-selling Golf SV from its local line-up, after doing the same with the Touran back in late 2016.

And now – despite the Golf SV (pictured below) last month benefiting from a facelift in Europe – a new report out of Germany suggests that the Wolfsburg automaker has plans to scrap both models and replace them with something called the Variosport.

According to AutoBild, the new Variosport will hit the market in about three years from now, boasting three rows of seats (and thus space for seven occupants) and a coupé-like sloping roofline. Its arrival, says the report, will spell the end of both the Touran and the Golf SV.

The German publication claims that the second row will furthermore boast swivelling seats along with individual infotainment screens, although the report adds that the Variosport will eschew sliding rear doors.

Power, meanwhile, is expected to come from a range of familiar four-cylinder engines, each featuring a mild hybrid function thanks to the Volkswagen Group’s 48-volt system.

Volkswagen Golf SV 1.5 TSI 130 2017 review

Should I buy one?

It comes down to what you like. There’s not much wrong with the SV - it, after all, has many of the same qualities as the Golf, just with a little extra weight on board. It's like a taller, slightly shorter Golf Estate - the car which makes the Golf SV’s place in the Golf family a little confusing.

Further to that, Volkswagen is realigning itself as a producer of emotional cars as opposed to rational ones, with products like the T-Roc epitomising this new identity.

This leaves the sensible, staid Golf SV in a bit of a pickle. As the last MPV of its type in a segment which has been in seemingly terminal decline for a good while, as well as a comparative slow-seller compared with the potentially big-selling T-Roc, the likelihood of the SV finding many more homes before the end of its sales in the UK seems remote. The upcoming Polo-sized T-Cross SUV could make its troubles even worse.

It deserves every one of those sales, though, for persevering in a segment all but absorbed by SUVs. If any car represents the formerly strictly rational approach taken by VW in its products, it’s the Golf SV.

SEE | Have you seen these 'unusual' vehicles from VW, Ford and Renault on the road?

• Volkswagen launched a 'Sportsvan' version of the popular Golf.

• The Ford B-Max was the brand's last compact MPV with double sliding doors.

• Before the success of the Kwid and Sandero, Renault had the Twingo.

Volkswagen Golf SV

The Golf is arguably VW's most popular model ever, with it currently spawning seven generations, while the imminent arrival of the eighth edition is due to launch in just a couple of months.

While many people think of a hatchback when a Golf is spoken about, and rightly so, the German brand also launched a handful of SV, or Supervan, examples locally.

Production stopped in 2016, but there are still a few models in existence. Performance-wise, later models sported 1.0 and 1.5-litre TSI petrol engines with power figures of 63, 81, 96 and 110kW, respectively.
