Volkswagen reveals preposterous Touareg V8 TDI

Volkswagen has revealed its barnstorming new Touareg V8 TDI, a model that shares its 4,0-litre eight-cylinder turbodiesel with the Audi SQ7.

Delivering 310 kW and 900 N.m of torque, the new flagship Touareg is capable of a claimed 0-100 km/h sprint time of just 4,9 seconds with a top speed electronically limited to 250 km/h. Interestingly, Volkswagen has yet to announce a corresponding claimed fuel consumption figure but has confirmed that the engine complies with Euro 6d-TEMP emissions standards.

The Touareg V8 TDI will be available in two trims; Elegance and Atmosphere. Elegance specs the interior to be more a more clinical affair complete with metal finishes and cool colours, while Atmosphere spec opts for warmer colours and elegant wood finishes.

Both trims feature the brand’s premium ‘Vienna’ leather upholstery as standard and include dual-zone climate control and an Innovision cockpit. Air suspension, an electrically-operated tailgate, comfort seats, stainless steel pedals and an LED light and sight package are standard.

The Touareg V8 TDI will hit European markets by the end of May. Local introduction and spec is yet to be confirmed.

VW's Touareg V8 returns

The torque train Touareg is back. With big V8 TDI power, the Volkswagen Touareg gets a healthy performance boost.

If you pine for the V10 Touaregs of old and find the current V6-powered version a touch underwhelming, VW has a perfect compromise in the making.

Due for its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show in early March, is a V8-powered Touareg. For fans of VW’s large luxury SUV, which blends stealth style with an immense ability and engineering refinement, the news of a V8-powered Touareg will certainly please fans.

The engine specification for this V8 TDI Touareg will be vaguely familiar to those who follow the VAG brands closely. It is in effect a rerolled Audi SQ7’s 4-litre V8 diesel, with two sequential turbochargers and a lag-mitigating electrically charged compressor. Peak power is rated at 309kW and with 900Nm of torque surging to all four wheels, it is plenty quick.

VW is understandably careful to ensure some separation of purpose between the similarly engined Touareg V8 and Audi SQ7, hence a small power advantage ceding to the Ingolstadt performance SUV, which is also a tenth quicker from 0-100kph. That said, this latest Touareg V8 diesel is hardly slow, capable of running the 0-100kph performance benchmark in 4.9 seconds.

To ensure that its large and very powerful luxury SUV remains an enjoyable vehicle to pilot, VW’s V8 Touareg will feature factory fitted air-suspension with the option of active anti-roll bars. The latter would be an adaption of technology seen on the Bentley Bentayga, which share a similar platform and 48v electrical structure.

New VW Touareg will be the most powerful German SUV with a diesel engine

Volkswagen is celebrating the world premiere of the new Touareg V8 TDI at the Geneva International Motor Show (7–17 March).

Its output of 310 kW / 421 PS makes it the most powerful SUV with a diesel engine from a German manufacturer.

The maximum torque of the high tech turbo diesel engine reaches the level of a super sports car: 900 newton metres. Whether cruising at low speeds, moving fast or going off- road – this power provides superior drive characteristics. The new flagship vehicle will come on the market at the end of May.

The new Touareg V8 TDI

The 250 km/h-fast Touareg V8 TDI demonstrates the potential of its dynamics as it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. Like all Touareg models, the new V8 version also complies with the Euro 6d-TEMP emission standard. Those purchasing the top model will have the choice between the standard Elegance design package or the Atmosphere package. Elegance stands for a technical interior design dominated by metal and cool colour tones; Atmosphere is a warm interior environment where wood and natural tones prevail.

The seat system and door trims of both versions have a leather finish (“Vienna” type) as standard. The interior of the Touareg V8 TDI thus creates both an exclusive and an avant-garde comfort zone. The screens of the Innovision Cockpit (digitised display and controls) with their glass covered surfaces, tanned leathers and aluminium and chrome details allow the extraordinarily high quality of the Touareg V8 TDI to be seen and felt. The wood applications are particularly elegant. An example of the Atmosphere design package: a narrow wing made of “curved beam wood” extends over the entire width of the dash panel here – a wood application curved as one part and made of ash that follows the shape of the dash panel.

Compared to the models with V6-engines, the Touareg V8 TDI additionally includes air suspension, a boot lid that opens and closes electrically, comfort seats, an anti-theft alarm system, stainless steel pedals and the “Light & Sight” package (including automatically dimming exterior mirrors and automatic headlights) as standard. The Touareg V8 TDI also comes with 19-inch Tirano alloy wheels instead of 18-inch wheels.

The equipment range also includes state-of-the-art driver assist and running gear systems. Some of the features that increase safety include “Night Vision” (detects people and animals in the dark using a thermal imaging camera), “Traffic Jam and Roadwork Lane Assist” (partly automated steering and lane departure warning, acceleration and braking, up to 60 km/h) and “Front Cross Traffic Assist” (responds to cross traffic in front of the Touareg). Technologies like the active all-wheel steering system (makes the Touareg as easy to handle as a compact car) and a roll stabilisation system with electromechanically controlled anti-roll bars further perfect handling and comfort. One of the best lighting systems in the world provides additional safety and comfort at night: the interactive “IQ.Light – LED matrix headlight”.

Volkswagen Touareg gets 335bhp V6 petrol engine

New UK flagship for third-generation SUV joins existing diesel models and cracks 0-62mph in under six seconds

This Touareg is the first to have such a clear focus on the Chinese market because, aside from being the largest new car market in the world, it's seen rapid growth in SUV demand in recent times. SUVs accounted for 8% of the Chinese market in 2007, but by 2017 this had skyrocketed to 45%.

VW boss Herbert Diess said: “The new Touareg sets a new benchmark at the top of the automotive world and shows what VW can do in terms of design and technology. It is a reflection of our brand.”

Three trim levels are offered at launch and the UK starting price applies to the entry-level SEL. Prices for the plusher R-Line variant, which comes with sportier bodywork details, start from £55,095, while R-Line Tech sits atop of the launch range with more standard kit (more on that below) and a starting price of £58,195.

The 3.0 TDI V6 top-end diesel produces 282bhp and 443lb ft of torque from 2250rpm, enabling the SUV to sprint from zero to 62mph in 6.1sec and reach a top speed of 146mph. A 228bhp diesel is also available.

The Chinese line-up includes a 362bhp plug-in hybrid that will arrive in late 2019. That variant is likely to go on sale in Europe, although no date has been set. A 415bhp, 664lb ft 4.0 V8 diesel will be offered in some markets, although no UK date has been set for its arrival either.

All of the engine options are powered through an eight-speed automatic gearbox, with standard all-wheel drive featuring a centre differential lock, with five standard and four optional drive modes.

The Surprising New VW Touareg V8 TDI Is Volkswagen's Last V8 Diesel

This year’s Geneva Motor Show was pretty much all about hybrid and electric cars, which is why it was surprising that Volkswagen showed up with a giant Touareg with a diesel V8, and called it the last V8 diesel they’d likely ever produce.

I shouldn’t have to work too hard to spell out the irony of Volkswagen, the company initially wrapped up by the Dieselgate diesel emissions cheating scandal, bringing a diesel V8 to a European car show where everyone else has seemingly moved on to what’s next.

Top Gear caught up with Jurgen Stackmann, head of marketing for VW, to ask how the company managed to produce a 419 horsepower, 664 lb-ft of torque diesel V8 crossover after a scandal that forced it to invest billions in a future electric lineup and electric-charging infrastructure.

Here’s the quote from Top Gear:

He laughs heartily. “I love it actually. It’s such a statement, for Volkswagen!”

But why a Touareg? Surely a Porsche Cayenne S Diesel makes more sense, as Porsche is, well, better known for fast cars?

“We had a long debate, and we believe Touareg is a prime car. It can handle any competitor from around the world. Giving it a V8 twist is a very special honour, and I believe it’s going to be a collector’s car, from day one.”

Hardly a Porsche 911 R or LaFerrari, is it? But Stackmann is resolute in his belief that what the world needs now is V8 Touareg diesel, sweet V8 diesel.

“I’ve met a lot of Touareg V10 TDI customers, and those that have one will never sell it. It’ll be the same idea with the V8. It’s for those customers who want something very special, and they’ll get it.

“Most likely, it’ll be the last V8 diesel car you’ll see.”

Well, it’ll be the last V8 diesel that Europe sees, as there’s no chance it would come to the U.S. Stackmann also clarified that the V8 won’t find its way into any other cars, so the Touareg is it.

The big diesel crossover should fit nicely in the company’s eclectic lineage of weird, anonymous, big-engined powerful models, like the Touareg V10 TDI and W12 Phaeton. Who doesn’t love a car with heaps of power and just a little bit of spite.

Volkswagen SA hands Touareg menacing new 'Black Style' package

Volkswagen South Africa has quietly added a menacing new “Black Style” package to its range of options for the Touareg.

The package is offered as a R39 900 option on the flagship Executive trim level (and thus not the Luxury specification), which already features the popular R-Line package as standard.

The Black Style package includes blacked-out chrome elements (including the grille), black roof rails, gloss-black side-mirror caps and black 21-inch “Suzuka” alloy wheels. VW SA says it will be offered in combination with “selected colours only”.

As a reminder, the Touareg Executive is priced from R1 221 500 (some R154 100 more than the Luxury derivative) and draws 190 kW and 600 N.m from its 3,0 TDI V6 engine, which is mated to all four corners via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The Touareg runs on the MLB Evo platform also underpinning the likes of the Audi Q7 (and Q8), Porsche Cayenne, Bentley Bentayga and Lamborghini Urus. And that, according to VW, allows this new model to weigh in a considerable 106 kg lighter than its predecessor.

VW Tiguan and Touareg Get Black Styling Packs

Dark art applied to VW SUVs.

VW SUV customers, who prefer darkened styling details to reflective ones, now have the option on two new design upgrades.

Both the Touareg and Tiguan are now available with a Black Style Package in South Africa – and it does pretty much what it says.

For the Touareg, this Black Style Package is only applicable to the Executive derivative. The upgrades tally an R-specification bumper, with blackened chrome styling elements, darkened air-intakes, black roof rails and wing mirrors.

VW has quoted R25 200 as the price for a Tiguan Black Style Package upgrade. If you don’t mind washing your VW SUV more than once a week, these darkened design upgrades will certainly be worth considering.

Volkswagen Touareg 3.0 TSI 2019 UK review

Should I buy one?

It’s very hard to see who this particular version of the Touareg is really aimed at. If you’re really dead against the idea of diesel, it’s likely you’re not that enamoured by the idea of a £50,000-plus Volkswagen SUV whatever powers it. And if the idea of a big petrol engine appeals, the way this one has been tuned does not.

The Touareg, interesting car as it is, wasn’t a complete package when it was launched last year, and this latest engine option does little to further its cause.

Volkswagen Touareg: celebratory ‘One Million’ model revealed

Volkswagen has revealed a new “One Million” special-edition model conceived to celebrate – you guessed it – the production of the one-millionth unit of the German firm's flagship SUV.

The new model features a unique “Sechura Beige” paint colour and the choice of two new styles of alloy wheels (either high-gloss polished 20-inch “Bogota” wheels or 21-inch “Suzuka” items in Adamantium Silver).

Darkened taillamps, sill panel trim (complete with “One Million” inscriptions) as well as a special badge on the B-pillar are also included. The wheelarch strips and the diffuser, meanwhile, are painted in gloss black. In addition, the special model can be upgraded with the R-Line Black Style exterior package, including exterior mirrors in “Reflection Silver”.

VW Touareg Celebrates 1 Million Production Milestone

Volkswagen is celebrating its Touareg premium SUV, which has reached its 1-million production milestone, with a Touareg ONE Million special edition model.

The new third-generation Touareg came to market last year and over a million units have rolled off the production line at Volkswagen’s Bratislava plant in Slovakia, the only place where the Touareg is built.

To celebrate this achievement, Volkswagen is offering customers a special edition model aptly named the Touareg ONE Million. The bespoke model can be had in the optional Sechura Beige paint finish and is offered with a choice of either high-gloss 20-inch Bogota wheels or larger 21-inch Adamantium Suzuka wheels. The taillights have been darkened for effect and black glossy wheel arch trim adds to the look while ‘ONE Million’ badging is seen on the sill panels and on the B-pillar. A R-Line Black Style Package is also on offer…

As for the interior, the seats are covered in Puglia leather coloured with olive leaf extracts. Amber Brown diamond stitching is found on the seats, door inners, steering wheel and gear lever. Even the key fob has received the Puglia leather treatment…
