I made the last payment on my 2014 Touareg last week and the dealer is emailing me trying to tempt me into a trade in for a new model. Very tempting, but the car still feels like new. So I think it'll be nice to be driving installment free for another year or 3 :p

ABT coaxes yet more grunt out of Volkswagen Touareg’s V8 TDI heart

In some markets (but unfortunately not South Africa), the Volkswagen Touareg can be specified with a V8 turbodiesel engine. And the folks over at ABT Sportsline have managed to extract yet more grunt from this hefty oil-burning mill.

In standard Touareg guise, the 4,0-litre V8 (which is also used by the Bentley Bentayga Diesel as well as Audi’s SQ7 and SQ8) generates 310 kW and a whopping 900 N.m. But thanks to ABT’s fettling, those peak outputs have risen to 368 kW and 970 N.m.

Volkswagen Touareg 3.0 V6 TDI 4Motion SE 2020 review

Should I buy one?

Nevertheless, the Touareg SE is still a lot of car for the money. At £45,445, it’s some £8000 cheaper than a basic XC90 and nearly £11,000 less than an entry level Audi Q7 - albeit one that comes with air suspension and an extra degree of pedigree as standard.

It’s also tricky not to respect the sense of subtle charm that defines the Touareg SE. Volkswagen reckons that only 10% of the Touaregs it sells in the UK will be in this basic spec, which seems like a bit of a shame, because it suits its understated character really rather well indeed.

New Volkswagen Touareg R revealed as 340 kW plug-in hybrid flagship

Volkswagen has taken the wraps off its new Touareg R, a plug-in hybrid SUV developed by the German firm’s in-house performance brand.

The newcomer is the first Volkswagen R model to feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain, representing what the automaker calls a “paradigm shift”.

The Touareg R generates total system outputs of 340 kW (40 kW more than the Touareg V8 TDI offered in some markets) and 700 N.m, facilitating what VW describes as “superlative performance and electric efficiency”. Top speed is electronically pegged at 250 km/h, while VW has yet to released a claimed 0-100 km/h sprint time.

The turbocharged 3,0-litre V6 offers 250 kW while the electric motor adds 100 kW. A lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 14,1 kWh is built into the luggage compartment underbody, while an eight-speed automatic transmission and a transfer box transmit power to the front and rear axles.

Volkswagen Touareg R is 456bhp hot hybrid

New plug-in hybrid performance SUV matches 2.9-litre petrol V6 with electric motor

Volkswagen has pulled the wraps off its new fast flagship, the Touareg R.

In keeping with the high-performance R sub-brand’s recent commitment to electrification, the new SUV uses a plug-in hybrid drivetrain to deliver 456bhp and can travel for up to 30 miles in electric-only mode. Performance figures have yet to be confirmed, but expect the 0-62mph sprint to take around 5.0sec and an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.

Autocar was shown around the Touareg R by the head of R division, Jost Capito, who revealed why Volkswagen had opted to make the model a plug-in hybrid rather than use the more powerful mild-hybrid V8 from sibling brand Audi’s recently launched RS Q8.

“The Touareg is the perfect car for the step into electrification,” explained Capito. “The engines from these other cars were never considered, as the Touareg is designed as a comfortable fast cruiser that needs to go from comfortable to sporty, but not extreme sporty. This is a car for enthusiasts but also for people with active lifestyles.”

New Volkswagen Touareg R: A car of many firsts!

Volkswagen has unveiled its 1st plug-in-hybrid R model. Not only is the Toureg R the new flagship of the brand’s Premium SUV range – it’s the most powerful offering in Volkswagen’s passenger-vehicle line-up.

With peak outputs of 340 kW and 700 Nm, the Toureg R is not quite in the league of headlining performance SUVs such as the Audi RS Q8 (441 kW/800 Nm), BMW X5M Competition (460 kW/750 Nm), Porsche Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid (500 kW/900 Nm) and its fellow Geneva Show debutant, the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S Coupe (450 kW/850 Nm). However, outright on-road performance has never been an objective of the Touareg range… What makes the Touareg R’s arrival notable is that it indicates the direction Volkswagen’s R brand is heading, plus it debuts a host of new technologies.

The new VW Touareg R is a 456bhp hybrid SUV

A big car, with a big V6, and a big… battery? Welcome to the new world of VW ‘R’

Volkswagen describes this big blue flagship SUV as a “paradigm shift”. Sadly, that doesn’t equate to “we’ve given it a massive V12 and afterburners”. Quite the opposite, as it turns out. It is the very first VW R model that’s a… a hybrid.

Yes friends, it’s 2020 and everything you think you know about fast cars is changing. This new Volkswagen Touareg R assumes the mantle of the most powerful VW you can buy; the first time a hybrid has, well, assumed such a mantle. The mantle was not available for comment, FYI.

Underneath there’s a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 petrol engine producing 336bhp, while a 14.1kWh lithium-ion battery stuffed into the boot powers an electric motor that provides an additional 130bhp. VW quotes total power as 456bhp, which is sufficient. Sufficiently good.

There’s also 516lb ft of torque on offer, permanent four-wheel-drive and a max trailer weight of 3.5 tonnes. Sadly, there’s no nod on how fast it’ll do the benchmark 0-62mph sprint, but expect it to be somewhere in the region of ‘that’s-jolly-amusing-isn’t-it?’

VW proudly trumpets that the Touareg R always starts off in ‘E-Mode’ – assuming the battery is charged – and can use only the battery all the way up to 87mph. Above that – or indeed if you flatten the throttle – the V6 kicks in and you get into all the whoopsies you want. At least until its 155mph limited top speed.

Vrr-phaa for grown-ups? Volkswagen reveals Touareg R

Volkswagen has ripped the covers off the first blue-blooded R version of the Touareg luxury SUV and while it’s not in the same league, output wise, as those fellow German heavy-hitters from the AMG, M and RS stables, the VeeDub does have an upper hand in the electrification race.

The Touareg R is a plug-in hybrid with system outputs of 340kW and 700Nm, when its 250kW 3-litre V6 turbopetrol engine and the electric motor are working in tandem.

Thanks to the 14.1 kWh battery that’s built into the boot floor the Touareg R can also drive on electric power only at up to 140km/h if it’s been charged. VW has yet to mention exactly how much distance it will cover between charges, but does state that the vehicle will cover “typical commute distances” without having to resort to petrol propulsion.

Power goes to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic gearbox and 4Motion permanent all-wheel-drive system that can send up to 70 percent of the drive force to the front axle and up to 80 percent to the back when deemed necessary. Apart from the EV mode that the vehicle defaults to when the battery is sufficiently charged, drivers can also choose Eco, Comfort, Normal, Sport and Individual driving modes.

The Touareg R rolls on 20-inch Braga alloy wheels and comes standard with an ‘R’ design package that includes model-specific bumpers as well as black colouring for the grille, window strips and mirror housings.

Hybrid VW Touareg R Revealed Packing 456 HP (340 KW)

Out of nowhere, the folks from Volkswagen take the covers off the most potent version of the firm’s flagship SUV, the Touareg R.

Under the hood sits a petrol-electric powertrain (similar to that from the Bentley Bentayga hybrid) which combines a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 developing 335 hp (250 kW) and a 134 hp (100 kW) electric motor housed within the eight-speed automatic gearbox to deliver permanent four-wheel drive in both combustion and electric driving modes. Together the systems produce 700 Nm of torque which should equate to a 0 to 100 km/h sprint time of around 5 seconds.

If you don’t want to burn any fuel, the Touareg R is capable of driving at 140 km/h in fully electric mode for an estimated 43 km.

Volkswagen Touareg R

Volkswagen is set to add a range-topping new premium model to its flagship Touareg line - the VW Touareg R. The versatile model's 340 kW (462 PS) plug-in hybrid drive offers an innovative blend of superlative performance and electric efficiency. When the battery is sufficiently charged, the new SUV always starts in the all-electric E-MODE for zero emissions. The battery capacity is designed so that the Touareg R can cover the average daily commute under electric power. Like all Touareg models, the new R version comes with permanent all-wheel drive (4MOTION) as standard. 4MOTION and the powerful drive system (700 Nm of torque) means the Touareg R has also been homologated for a maximum trailer weight of 3.5 tonnes. The premium model can cope with this maximum trailer weight even in E-MODE. As the first plug-in hybrid SUV in the world, the Touareg can also be fitted with the trailer manoeuvring system Trailer Assist. And yet another first: the Touareg will be available with Travel Assist for the first time. The premium model will be the first Volkswagen to boast assisted driving (automatic longitudinal and lateral guidance) up to a speed of 250 km/h.

First R model with plug-in hybrid

The new flagship model was designed by the Volkswagen R performance brand, which traditionally develops the sportiest models in the Volkswagen range. The VW Touareg R represents a paradigm shift - it is the first Volkswagen R model to feature a plug-in hybrid drive. It is also the first time a hybrid model has been the most highly-powered Volkswagen. The extremely well appointed Touareg R, which features the Black Style exterior design package along with 20-inch alloy wheels (Braga) and R-Line interior trim (including Vienna leather with crystal grey stitching), is set to enter the market in the second half of 2020.
