How's about that ST? Looking good.

Ford Edge ST

Ford begins introducing the coveted ST brand to its SUV lineup with the unveiling of the all-new Ford Edge ST, building on its best-ever SUV sales year in the U.S.

"The all-new Ford Edge ST - Ford's first SUV to be tuned by the Ford Performance team - features the most powerful V6 engine available in its class with a specially tuned 2.7-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost engine pumping out 335 horsepower (250kw) and 380 lb.-ft. of torque. (515 Nm)"

It's also outfitted for dynamic handling with a quick-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission, standard all-wheel drive with selectable traction control, an available performance brake package, and ST-tuned sport suspension.

"Edge ST puts a new animal on the road - a performance SUV with a track mentality," said Hau Thai-Tang, executive vice president of Product Development and Purchasing. "From a performance standpoint, and with its SUV silhouette and versatility, it sets a new standard Edge fans will love to drive."

A new Sport Mode allows Ford Edge ST drivers to experience more aggressive throttle response and shifting patterns that hold gears near redline through cornering maneuvers, sharper engine braking, and a more resonant exhaust tone. Drivers can also manually shift using the steering wheel-mounted SelectShift paddle shifters while firmly positioned in unique Edge ST seating with additional bolstering.

To complement its performance abilities, Ford Edge ST features new front and rear styling, a wide mesh grille for optimal cooling, deep side skirts and dual-exhaust outlets. Unique 21-inch wheels are available and interior design cues on the steering wheel, seat backs and scuff plates provide a subtle reminder that this five-passenger SUV is something special.

Replacement for the old Territory ST? Looks good. They should put that engine in the RS.

Of course not. The old Territory ST was a Aussie one man band jobbie. This Edge ST is a proper Ford Performance tuned jobbie. Not sure if there will be RHD availability for the eg. UK market.

It’s official: Ford has slapped its ST badge on an SUV

Ford has revealed its new Edge ST, affixing the high-performance badge to its mid-size SUV.

While the Edge isn’t offered here in South Africa, the reveal does seemingly signal the start of the automaker’s fresh plan to bulk up its Ford Performance line-up with fast SUVs.

The first SUV to be tuned by the Ford Performance team (the Territory ST was built before the dedicated high-performance division was created in late 2014), the Edge ST is powered by a tuned version of the brand’s 2,7-litre twin-turbocharged V6 EcoBoost engine, in this case worth 250 kW and 515 N.m, and mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission (with paddle shifters).

While Ford has yet to reveal claimed performance figures (we should learn more after the official reveal at the upcoming North American International Auto Show in Detroit), it does say that the hot Edge will gain a Sport mode featuring sharper throttle response and shifting patterns that hold gears near redline, along with a “more resonant exhaust tone”.

All-wheel drive comes standard along with selectable traction control, while Ford will also offer a performance braking package and “ST-tuned” sport suspension.

The Edge ST gains model-specific styling cues fore and aft, including a wide mesh grille and dual-exit exhausts. Deep side-skirts and new 21-inch alloys set it apart in profile, while the steering wheel, seats and scuff-plates all feature ST-badging.

While we’re highly unlikely to see this new model in South Africa, it does certainly point to Ford’s intention to offer other ST-badged SUVs going forward…

Car Mag report of the Territory ST from October 2006:

Terminal Velocity Territory

Have you ever found yourself sitting behind the wheel of a Ford Territory and wishing there was just a bit more power on tap? Apparently, a considerable number of Ford customers have had that exact thought coursing through their minds – a number considerable enough for Ford to give the Territory the ST treatment.
From the outside, you’ll be able to differentiate the Territory ST from its standard siblings by the addition of a prominent bonnet scoop, unique five spoke 18-inch alloys and dual exhaust tips. Thankfully, Ford has chosen to omit the twin racing stripes that adorn some of its other ST products giving the Territory ST a modicum of subtlety.
Ford’s 4,0-litre turbocharged engine delivers an impressive 245 kW at 5 250 r/min and generates 480 N.m of torque at 2 000 r/min. These figures translate into a claimed 0-100km/h dash of 7,5 seconds, top speed of 210 km/h and average fuel consumption of 14,2 litres/100 km. The six-speed automatic transmission, which has become a standard feature on the rest of the Territory range, has also found its way to the ST.
Ford has also made some revisions to the existing Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system in an attempt to strike a balance between electronic intervention and the sporting bias of the ST. Power-assisted rack and pinion steering, Hill Descent Control and ABS with EBD complement the ST’s AWD system. A combination of virtual pivot control link front suspension and control blade independent rear suspension aims to strike a balance between handling and refinement in the performance-orientated newcomer.
Inside, the ST adds a number of sporting touches to the Territory’s interior. The seats are clad in charcoal leather with silver stitching and eucalyptus-coloured trim inserts contrast with the predominantly charcoal cabin. Dual-zone automatic air conditioning and a dash-mounted 6-disc CD shuttle are fitted as standard.
Furthermore, the ST model continues to exhibit the practicality of the rest of the Territory range with such features as 30 storage compartments, second row seating with a 60/40 split, lockable compartment under the driver’s seat, and a third row of seats that enables the ST to transport up to seven people.
By giving a sizeable vehicle such as the Territory ST the means to rocket along at a considerable pace, safety is a major consideration. The SUV’s safety systems include front and passenger- and side curtain airbags, and a collapsible brake pedal. A five year/90 000 km service plan, three year 100 000 km warranty and three year unlimited roadside assistance plan give some added peace of mind to potential owners.
The Territory ST will be available locally from the beginning of November and will cost R419 500, a FMCSA spokesman said.

Ford UK boss: no hot ST SUVs will come to Europe

The US market is getting a 330bhp (246kw) Edge ST, but we won't be seeing it in the UK

Ford will not launch high-performance ST-badged SUVs in Europe, reasoning that it won’t deliver what customers want from such cars, according to UK boss Andy Barratt.

Explaining why the US market is getting an Edge ST, which is powered by a 2.7-litre V6 Ecoboost engine making around 330bhp, Barratt said: “All our research shows buyers want a combination of the sporty ST styling with a more luxurious feel to it, from the interior finish to the engine package.”

Barratt also played down the likelihood of that decision changing, despite premium marques making good business cases for high-end sporty cars in the booming SUV segment.

“The customer will always have the casting vote. If the demand is there, it is unlikely we’ll resist it,” he said. “But we already have plenty of evidence that ST-Line is the way to go. The Kuga (above) has led the way on this and the Fiesta is following suit. Customers are stepping up from Zetec trims and that’s good business.”

Ford illustrated this 'customer chooses' approach just last week when it announced that it will remove the Fiesta and all saloon models from its US line-up. The cars, which include the Fusion (America's version of the Mondeo, pictured above) and larger Taurus, have seen dwindling demand as customers move away from traditional bodyshapes to SUVs.

The company said it was removing low-volume cars to boost profitability. It is using the money saved from this kind of efficiency measures (it expects to free up $11.5 billion) for the development of alternatively fuelled models.
