1st official pics are out of the facelifted Cherokee. To my eyes it looks more restrained than previously. Lots of styling cues from the latest Compass.

Jeep is introducing the 2019 Jeep Cherokee - the most capable mid-size sport-utility vehicle (SUV) boasts a new, authentic and more premium design, along with even more fuel-efficient powertrain options.

The car will make its debut at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Jeep drops first images of its refreshed Cherokee…

Jeep has revealed the first official images of its facelifted Cherokee, which will debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January 2018.

The single-paragraph press release that accompanied the four images promises that the updated Cherokee will gain a “new, authentic and more premium design”, along with “even more fuel-efficient powertrain options”.

The images show that the refreshed version of the fifth-generation Cherokee will adopt Jeep’s latest family face, ditching the outgoing model’s controversial separate lighting elements up front in favour of more traditional combined units. Round back, you’ll also notice a minor redesign, along with the adoption of new tail-lamps.

We’ll learn more about the updated powertrain options once the vehicle makes its official bow in Detroit.

Jeep Cherokee revealed ahead of Detroit motor show

Updated SUV gets face to match its siblings; it’ll be revealed on the 16 January

Jeep has revealed its facelifted Cherokee ahead of the car’s public debut at the Detroit motor show in January.

A rival to SUVs like the Land Rover Discovery Sport and higher-spec versions of the Volkswagen Tiguan, the next Cherokee trades the distinctive design of the outgoing car for a look that’s more similar to its siblings.

Currently the Cherokee, which sells in Britain from £34,400, comes with diesel engines in 2.0-litre and 2.2-litre forms, with front and all-wheel drive available. The range is topped by a Trailhawk variant with a 3.2-litre V6 petrol that outputs 268bhp.

At this stage, Jeep has only said it will add more fuel-efficient engines to the Cherokee line-up with the 2018 car. It is not yet known whether they will be new or updates of the current units.

The brand recently introduced a new 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that uses a twin-scroll turbocharger and eTorque hybrid technology to its line-up with the new Wrangler. It’s possible this powertrain will be offered with the updated Cherokee range.

No major changes have been applied to the 2018 Cherokee's interior, which in current form comes with a 8.4in TFT touchscreen, shared with its FCA stablemate, the Maserati Ghibli, and features DAB digital radio and Bluetooth connectivity.

Following the reveal of the Cherokee facelift, Jeep will launch its recently shown Compass in Britain. That model, which will cost from £22,995, slots between the Cherokee and the entry Jeep model, the Renegade. Jeep will also launch a 697bhp version of its biggest model, called the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, in 2018.

Although it enjoys success elsewhere, particularly in its home market, Jeep has experienced dwindling sales in the UK. Its market share for 2017 is just 0.26%, half of what it was the year before, but it hopes the launch of its new and refreshed models will boost demand. Even its most niche model, the Wrangler, has been approved for higher UK supply.

First pictures: 2019 Jeep Cherokee

These are the first official pictures of the comprehensively revised 2019 Jeep Cherokee, due to debut at the Detroit Motor Show on 16 January, less than five months after the release of the updated 2018 range.

The most striking change to be seen in the photos is that the distinctive ‘split’ headlights of the current Cherokee have been replaced by more conventional high mounted one-piece headlight clusters, bringing the front treatment more in line with the rest of the Jeep range, in particular the current Compass and Grand Cherokee.

And anoraks will note that the bars of the signature seven slated grille are shorter and chunkier (another nod to the Compass) and that the number plate has migrated from the rear bumper to a restyled tailgate.

There are actually two different Cherokees in the pictures: the silver example seems to be the standard version, while the red one is apparently the more off-road orientated Trailhawk derivative, to judge by the towhooks on the front bumper and seemingly more generous ride height.

No details have been released of what’s behind the “more athletic yet upscale design”, other than a promise of more efficient powertrain options. Our guess is that means downsized engines, more and closer transmission ratios and possibly the long-rumoured hybrid version.

There’s a clue to that in the one and only interior shot, where the rev-counter is redlined just above 5500rpm, significantly lower than on the four or six-cylinder engines of the current Cherokee - but exactly the same as for the two-litre turbopetrol hybrid four recently introduced on the new Wrangler.

As soon as we know more, so will you.

Updated Jeep Cherokee gets fresh face, new engine

At the end of 2017, Jeep released a handful of images of its refreshed Cherokee. And now that the redesigned model has taken the stage at the 2018 North American International Auto Show, the US manufacturer has provided more details about the update.

We already knew that the Cherokee would gain a completely redesigned front end (ditching the outgoing model’s controversial separate lighting elements in favour of more traditional combined units) and some minor alterations to the rear. A few changes have also been made to the interior.

Inside, you’ll now find fresh satin-chrome and piano black high-gloss accents as well as what Jeep calls “improved packaging” and a new lightweight, hands-free automatic tailgate. Other additions include a redesigned centre console, repositioned to fit an extra storage compartment beneath.

The Cherokee also gains a new turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 201 kW and 400 N.m of torque, mated to an updated nine-speed automatic transmission. The 3,2-litre V6 Penstar and 2,4-litre Tigershark engines remain in the US range as well, but there’s still no turbodiesel option.

Jeep says the Cherokee’s various four-wheel-drive systems (the first is the basic system, the second adds a two-speed power transfer unit with low-range and the third – standard on Trailhawk variants – gains a mechanically locking rear differential) have also benefited from a few revisions.

FCA South Africa has confirmed plans to bring the revised Cherokee to local shores in the third quarter of 2018.

Jeep's new Cherokee gets turbo engine from Alfa

Late last year we brought you some pictures of Jeep’s facelifted Cherokee, but at the time we had little information as to what was happening under the skin. Now the mid-sized SUV has been fully revealed at the Detroit Motor Show, and we have some more mechanical detail to offer.

Aside from a less polarising front end, which ditches the outgoing model’s unusual split headlight setup in favour of more conventional one-piece clusters, the new Cherokee also gets a lighter aluminium bonnet and composite tailgate, a new dual pane panoramic sunroof, five new wheel designs and a cleaner rear end designed to be more in line with the smaller Compass and bigger Grand Cherokee.

Under the hood you’ll still find the same naturally aspirated 2.4 and 3.2-litre engine options, but both have been fettled for improved fuel consumption. A new engine also makes its way into the range, in the form of a two-litre turbopetrol similar to that found in Alfa’s Stelvio SUV. We’re waiting for official comment from Fiat Chrysler SA on exact outputs, but expect it to match closely the Stelvio’s 206kW and 400Nm.

All engines are mated to Jeep’s nine-speed auto gearbox, but there’s a choice of three separate all or four-wheel drive systems depending on derivative.

Jeep’s new Active Drive I system is a simple all-wheel drive setup which automatically divvies drive to each wheel without intervention from a driver.

Active Drive II is a recalibrated version of the existing four-wheel drive system in Cherokees, with a proper transfer case and low range gearing. Models equipped with this version also get an extra 25mm of ground clearance.

The third system, called Active Drive Lock, comes standard in the range-topping Trailhawk and is basically the same as Active Drive II but adds a rear differential lock. The new Trailhawk also gains specific red tow hooks, wider fender flares and a new 17 inch wheel design of its own.

All three systems come standard with Jeep’s Selec-Terrain traction control system, which allows the driver to choose between five drive modes for Auto, Snow, Sport, Sand/Mud and Rock.

Changes inside are modest but buyers will now have a choice of 17.8cm or 21.3cm touchscreen infotainment systems. Each is compatible with Android Auto and Apple Carplay, but only the top tier unit comes with navigation. A slight redesign of the centre console makes more space for smartphones and another USB port has been added for rear seat passengers.

Fiat Chrysler SA confirms that the new Cherokee is planned for local launch sometime in the third quarter of 2018, but it’s too early to say which models or specifications are destined for our market.

Jeep Cherokee Limited 2018 review

Should I buy one?

Speaking of rivals, the Cherokee finds itself in a bit of a tricky position. Jeep says it goes up against the likes of the Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento and Land Rover Discovery Sport, yet all of those SUVs offer a third row of seats. The Cherokee, on the other hand, does not.

Then there’s the issue of how much it costs. Jeep will offer just two trim levels - Limited and Overland - when the Cherokee goes on sale in the UK next year, and both sit at the plusher end of the range. While UK pricing has yet to be confirmed, we were told that the Limited model - the same as our test car - would be priced at €54,900 in Austria, while a figure of £40,000-£45,000 should be expected for the UK. While its higher default spec does mean it comes generously equipped, its price places it in BMW X3, Volvo XC60 and Audi Q5 territory. Next to those cars, the Cherokee seems out of its depth in terms of not only refinement, dynamic capability and material appeal but also badge desirability.

It’s not outstandingly economical, showing an indicated 35mpg over the course of our test drive, and if the pre-facelift model is anything to go by, residual forecasts likely won’t be that impressive, either.

It does come with a full five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, though. But is that enough to make it a recommendable buy? Afraid not.

Jeep Cherokee (2019) International Launch Review

Jeep revealed its facelifted Cherokee at the Detroit Show earlier this year. The updated Cherokee is expected to arrive in South Africa early in 2019, but our UK correspondents grabbed an early drive in Sicily and filed this report…

Pricing

This far in advance, there are no price indications for the 2019 Jeep Cherokee model line-up, but Jeep SA did confirm they were hoping to “target pricing along lines of current models”.

Summary

There is little doubt the refreshed Jeep Cherokee is more accomplished, more refined and better equipped to tackle the competitive medium SUV segment than the model it replaces. It also seems, on face value, to have the styling it needs to appeal to more buyers.

If you want a reasonably priced SUV that transports you comfortably to work during the week – and hit the trail on the weekend should your mood or lifestyle take you – then the refreshed Jeep Cherokee will not disappoint.

Sadly though, it still can’t beat top rivals as an all-rounder.
