Mercedes-AMG G63 handed head-turning body kit and 1 050 N.m

German tuner Keyvany has released a Hermes package for the Mercedes-AMG G63, handing the SUV a head-turning body kit and even more oomph.

Using swathes of carbon-fibre, along with a black-and-silver colour scheme, the company has given the G63 a new bonnet, front fenders, grille, front bumper and roof attachment. The rear scores a spoiler, new bumper (with a diffuser) and fresh covers for the spare wheel and taillamps. In profile, the SUV sports extra trim along its flanks (and on the D-pillar) plus widened wheel arches. A set of 24-inch forged alloy wheels completes the flashy makeover.

As for exterior lighting, LEDs are fitted to the front bumper, grille, spoiler and rear wheel cover for dramatic illumination once the sun has set.

Four-pot G-Class? Mercedes-Benz reveals new base G350 variant in China

Mercedes-Benz has launched a new base version of its G-Class in China, with the G350 employing a four-cylinder petrol engine.

According to the Stuttgart-based firm’s Chinese website, the G350’s turbocharged 2,0-litre petrol powerplant makes 190 kW and 370 N.m (the latter spread from 1 800 to 4 000 r/min), directed to all four corners via a nine-speed automatic transmission.

That’s enough, says the German firm, for a sprint from standstill to 100 km/h in 8,1 seconds and a top speed of 190 km/h.

Still, it’s by no means a budget Geländewagen, with the listed starting price in China of ¥1 429 800 translating to nearly R3,5-million.

Used car buying guide: Mercedes G-Class

The G-Wagen is generally seen as a status symbol now, but we reckon there’s far more interest to be found in its utilitarian origins

If you have a wad of cash to splurge on a capable and luxurious off-roader but don’t fancy following the herds into a new Land Rover Defender, why not consider a used example of arguably its closest rival?

It has visibly evolved even less during its 41-year life cycle than the original Defender did, but regardless of that, the Mercedes-Benz Geländewagen (meaning terrain vehicle, but you’ll know it as the G-Wagen or G-Class) is an overwhelmingly capable off-roader that manages to marry refinement with ruggedness in a way its British contemporary never really could.

VIDEO: Mercedes-Benz reminds customers how to use the G-Class

Mercedes-Benz has released a promotional video, highlighting the abilities of its G350d. The skit shows Rob, a soon-to-be G-Class owner, take delivery of his new turbodiesel SUV. However, before he is given the keys, product expert Phillip subjects Rob to a couple of tests that highlight what is required of a driver when using the G-Class to its full capabilities.

It’s official: Mercedes-Benz says ‘AMG, Maybach and G will go electric’

Mercedes-Benz says it plans to “take the lead in electric drive”, while also confirming “AMG, Maybach and G will go electric”.

Announcing its new business strategy – conceived to “enhance the Mercedes-Benz brand’s luxury status, raise the product portfolio’s positioning and mix, [and] pursue significant growth for sub-brands" – the Stuttgart-based firm confirmed its commitment to electrification “across all products and segments”.

The German company said its Affalterbach-based AMG performance division was “set for the next level with high-performance electrification, starting in 2021”, adding that “Maybach will pursue global opportunities, doubling in size and going electric”.

Mercedes furthermore announced four all-new electric vehicles based on its upcoming Electric Vehicle Architecture (EVA) platform. The EQS luxury sedan will be the first, hitting the market in 2021, with the EQE, the EQS-SUV and the EQE-SUV following.

“In addition, AMG, Maybach and G will go electric. From 2025, multiple further models will be added to the electric vehicles portfolio on the second all-new dedicated electric platform, the Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA) designed for compact and medium-sized cars,” the firm said in a statement.

Mercedes-AMG G63 handed aggressive overhaul courtesy of Lumma Design

Lumma Design has provided a more intimidating look for the Mercedes-AMG G63, a little under a year after its last update for the Geländewagen.

Wearing the CLR G770 R badge, this package provides yet more drama thanks to a new set of panels and wheels.

There's a new front spoiler, rear apron and rear door attachments, along with unique trim between the taillamps and a fresh grille with integrated LED daytime running lights. Furthermore, the rear wing extensions have been upgraded.

Brabus-built armoured Mercedes-AMG G63 with 588 kW now available in SA!

Ever wanted a Brabus-built armoured Mercedes-AMG G63 with a peak power output of 588 kW? Well, such a thing is now officially available in South Africa.

Yes, local vehicle-armouring firm SVI Engineering has been named the official distributor of Brabus Automotive armoured products in Africa.

First on the menu for well-heeled local buyers is the German company’s Invicto range, which comprises “high-end armoured versions of the latest Mercedes-Benz G-Class” and is produced by Brabus in Bottrop. The company says the Invicto “Shelter Cell” is created using hot-formed armouring steel plates and 3D-printed parts, with the ballistic protection level rated at VR6.

SVI Engineering has confirmed three versions will be available in South Africa. The first is dubbed “Pure”, with the exterior and interior remaining “as close to series production as possible”. Then there’s “Luxury”, which adds a bespoke interior along with fresh exterior elements and the option of performance upgrades. Finally, the most extreme “Mission” version includes items such as protection-vest-compatible seats, a digital rear display mirror, an intercom system and 20-inch off-road tyres.

SVI Engineering says the Pure and Luxury packages will each start at around R5,4-million, with the Mission kit kicking off at about R6,2-million. Note, however, that these prices are estimates and exclude the cost of the base vehicle (some R3 366 480 in the case of the G63), shipping and taxes. A two-year/100 000 km warranty, however, is provided by Brabus.

Mercedes-Benz has now built 400 000 examples of the G-Class

Mercedes-Benz says it has reached a production milestone for the G-Class, with some 400 000 units now having been built since 1979.

The 400 000th example to roll off the assembly line was a G400d destined for the garage of a “long-term customer” from the Rhineland who now has "around 20" G-Class models.

“We are so proud to have produced 400 000 of these off-road vehicles. We’d like to thank our loyal customers and fans, plus our employees – not to mention our production partner in Graz, Magna Steyr. At present, demand far exceeds the production capacity available,” said Dr Emmerich Schiller, head of the off-road vehicles division and CEO of Mercedes-Benz G GmbH.

Mercedes-Benz G-Class handed 'coach' doors and interior makeover!

Hofele has handed the Mercedes-Benz G-Class a comprehensive refinement package that even includes coach doors. The Mercedes-Benz specialist calls the package the "Ultimate HG".

The unique rear doors are a highlight, providing rear passengers improved entry and exit. This is further enhanced by the full-length electrically deployable side steps.

Visual changes to the SUV include a newly designed front grille, headlamp surrounds and front bumper. This is complemented by a set of wider multi-contoured carbon-fibre wheel arches and a collection of chrome trims, plus an roof-mounted light bar. A set of 23-inch Turbine forged alloy wheels is also part of the deal, along with a two-tone Carpathian Grey (by Range Rover) over Crystal Black (by Rolls-Royce) colour scheme.
