Maybach-inspired G-Class? Mercedes-AMG G63 gets a posh makeover

Ever wanted a Mercedes-Benz G-Class with a Maybach flavour (other than the G650 Landaulet)? Well, TopCar Design has created exactly that, giving the Mercedes-AMG G63 a proper makeover.

The tuner has given the G63 a two-tone paint job (as offered on current Mercedes-Maybach models), combining silver and royal blue.

While the front end doesn't drastically depart from AMG’s conventional styling, it is a little more aggressive thanks to tweaked lines and plenty of carbon-fibre. The bumper consists of 11 visible elements and many other components hidden from the eye. There's a front bumper with three air intakes, a lower lip splitter, a central A-shaped spoiler, cover plates on the right and left, and a pair of LED daytime running lights. TopCar Design has also added an LED panel at the leading edge of the roof.

Mansory hands Mercedes-AMG G63 fresh carbon parts ... and 1 000 N.m!

Mansory’s penchant for tuning the Mercedes-AMG G63 continues with yet another custom package. Limited to just 10 units, this "Gronos 2021" kit includes exterior and interior redesigns as well as a bump in power.

A British racing green paint job has been applied, along with a comprehensive body kit consisting of custom front and rear bumpers and widened doors. There's also a new bonnet design with air outlets at the front and sides as well as double daytime running lights positioned on either end of the front bumper. All parts are finished in naked carbon-fibre, with the look rounded off by a set of 24-inch FN.5 design forged alloy wheels finished in black.

The "Gronos 2021" G63 isn’t just show, either. The twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 petrol engine has been fitted with a pair of larger turbochargers, new downpipes, a high-performance exhaust system and a custom engine management system. This increases the standard peak outputs of 430 kW and 850 N.m to 625 kW and 1 000 N.m. The result, according to Mansory, is a 0-100 km/h time of 3,5 seconds and a limited top speed of 250 km/h.

DRIVEN: Mercedes-Benz G400d 4Matic Stronger Than Time 9G-tronic

The Geländenwagen has stood the 40-plus-year test of time and will arguably continue to do so even after its current, more traditional powertrains are relegated to the history books and replaced with electric motors. (Mercedes has revealed a carbon-free G is on the horizon). The terrain vehicle so adored by Gen Xs, Gen Ys and Gen Zs, the youngest of the bunch, will remain as capable with the birth of each new generation of humankind. A feat not many SUVs will ever be able to achieve. In regard to the here and now; all things considered, the G400d is arguably the G to get ... if you can afford its R2,9-million asking price, that is.

1 000 N.m, anyone? Mercedes-AMG G63 gets another performance upgrade

B&B Automobiltechnik has revealed new tuning packages for the Mercedes-AMG G63 as well as other models in the Mercedes-Benz G-Class range.

The twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 in the G63 delivers 430 kW and 850 N.m of torque as standard. With B&B’s stage one CPU control unit modification and a slight increase in turbo boost pressure, the peak outputs have been increased to 478 kW and 940 N.m. Opting for stage two, which adds improved intake paths and air ducts as well as a higher boost pressure, increases these figures to 515 kW and 1 000 N.m.

The oil-burning G400d receives a similar set of modifications. As standard, its 3,0-litre straight-six mill delivers 243 kW and 700 N.m but with B&B’s stage one kit, these numbers are increased to 272 kW and 780 N.m. Stage two cranks it up even further with figures of 294 kW and 825 N.m.

Mercedes-Benz G400d Stronger Than Time (2021) Review

Fast Facts

Model Tested: Mercedes-Benz G400d Stronger Than Time
Engine: 3.0-litre, 6-cylinder turbocharged diesel
Power/Torque: 243 kW/700 Nm
Transmission: 9-speed automatic
Fuel consumption: 9.6 L/100 km (claimed)
Load capacity: 667–1 941 litres

Price and warranty

The Mercedes-Benz G400d Stronger Than Time is priced from R2 892 840 and is sold with a 2-year/unlimited km warranty and a 5-year/100 000km maintenance plan.

Verdict

The G-Class is, in many ways, a ludicrous product. Its monolithic presence and the full breadth of its off-road capability is far beyond what most of its intended buyers will ever need and even fewer will ever engage but one of its diff locks. Here you have perhaps one of the world’s most capable vehicles and it’s mostly – if not all – just for show. It's a travesty, considering what the Benz is capable of.

The G-Wagon, however, is more than capable of putting on a show/almost justifying its prohibitively high asking price. It’s got the kerb appeal and it’s fantastically equipped with all the technology and comfort features that you would expect at this price point. As far as the turbodiesel engine’s performance is concerned, it has enough grunt (as well as sufficient economy) to do this application justice.

This engine will appeal to more conservatively-minded prospective G-Class buyers who couldn't care less about having the fastest and loudest "G" on the market. The G400d is more civilised and less “shouty” than its AMG-fettled G63 stablemate, but it’s also more fit for purpose when it comes to tackling off-road terrain and we think there’s notable value in that.

Your purchasing decision will ultimately depend on what type of person you are. If you’re about to launch a new rap album and have something to prove or need to show the world you've made it, then the G63 is probably the one to go for. However, if you have a finer appreciation for the G-Glass and intend on tapping into the Benz’s capability in a more efficient manner, then the G400d is a good bet.

No matter what you choose though, know that the affectionately nicknamed G-Wagon is in a class of its own. There’s simply nothing like it...

Spy Shots: 2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Squared

UPDATE: We first reported this story back in May 2020 and showed some grainy photos of the new Mercedes-Benz G500 4x4 Squared. Now this model has been spotted undergoing dynamic testing at the Nurburgring. The photos are much clearer, showing lots of interesting details and a lot of the camouflage has been removed. We can see model-specific daytime running lights and the vehicle sits far higher than a standard G-Class.

Hofele HG63 Limitless breaks cover as one-off luxury SUV

The Hofele HG63 Limitless has been revealed as another one-off Mercedes-AMG G63 by the exclusive near-Stuttgart-based automotive tailor. The Benz-specialist has added a number of unique trims to the interior and exterior of the luxury 4×4 for an exclusive customer as a part of its bespoke program.

Creating an exclusive look, the Hofele HG63 Limitless adopts extensive use of exposed carbon fibre on its redesigned front bumper, Power Dome bonnet, all-new wheel arch mounted side vents and other panels. This is contrasted by the G ‘Manufaktur Citrine Brown Magno’ exterior paint and a set of 24-inch Cross Spoke design forged alloy wheels finished in Grey Shadow Gloss. For ease of entry and exit to and from the cabin, the G63 has also been kitted out with a pair of full-length electric sidesteps that operate in conjunction with the side mounted exhausts.
