Road Test: Mercedes-Benz G400d is a mesmerising 4×4

Test summary

Taking all this into account and the fact that it’s (almost) entirely built by hand in a bespoke facility, it makes the G400d’s initially steep asking price less lamentable, especially when you remember it significantly undercuts similar luxurious vehicles such as the Bentley Bentayga, Maserati Levante and Rolls-Royce Cullinan.

Furthermore, a glance through the classifieds will reveal that G-Wagons tend to maintain strong resale value, which is in contrast to some large luxury SUVs. Within the G-Class range, this engine is far more sensible than the G63’s 4,0-litre V8, as it allows owners to fully utilise it both on- and off-road.

Having said that, if you invest just under R3 million of your hard-earned money and opt to never take this leviathan off the tarmac, you are truly missing out on a mesmerising 4×4 experience. The G-Class is best suited to take you places no other luxury SUV can; so, be sure to use it the way its creators intended … the Stronger than Time badge is not one of empty meaning.

Brabus 900 Rocket Edition Takes G Wagon To A New Level With 888 HP (662 KW)

If you, like us, thought BRABUS was finished with the current generation of Mercedes-AMG G63, then we were wrong.

Say hello to the Brabus 900 Rocket Edition which will be limited to 25 cars globally and as the title suggests, it is a G63 turned up to a whole new level.

As the name suggests, it packs 900 PS (888hp; 662 kW) from a 4.5-litre twin-turbo V8 but what is astonishing is the insane 1,250 Nm (922 lb-ft) of torque. Brabus was concerned the transmission might not survive that gargantuan amount of torque, so in the 900 Rocket Edition, torque is electronically limited to 1,050 Nm (774 lb-ft).

Brabus 900 Rocket Edition takes G63 to the extreme

Of course, even in its standard form, the Mercedes-AMG G63 is an extreme and nonsensical vehicle, which is loved by many for those exact reasons, but if you’re venturing down this path then why not just make it even more extreme and nonsensical? That’s exactly what Brabus set out to do with its new 900 Rocket Edition.

Not only does the heavily modified Geländewagen boast an aggro looking widebody kit and extensively refurbished four-seater cabin but the German tuner has also managed to extract a whopping 622 kW and 1 250 N.m from the range-topping G-Class. And sure, that is not an improvement over the earlier 900 models but consider that this output was previously achieved with Mercedes-AMG’s V12 engine, whereas this new 900 Rocket Edition achieves it with the 4-litre twin-turbo V8 unit.

To that end, Brabus did more than just strap on a fancier turbocharger and tweak the engine software to the max – the tuner actually increased the engine displacement to 4407 cc, through enlarging the cylinder bores to 84 mm and installing correspondingly dimensioned pistons. Bespoke Brabus turbochargers, which boost to 1,4 bar, and a Ram-Air intake are also among the numerous modifications made to this powerplant.

But what difference does it all make out on the mean streets? According to Brabus, the 900 Rocket Edition can sprint from 0-100 km/h in 3,7 seconds and reach a top speed of 280 km/h.

This Mansory G-Class is yellow, and anything but mellow

With the Mansory Gronos, the German tuner has done what it does best by taking a vehicle that wasn’t exactly subtle in the first place and turning it into a head-turner of note. If understated elegance is your thing then now is the time to look away.

Thankfully, for those whose sensitive eyes might struggle with the bright yellow paintwork, Mansory is planning to build just 10 of these – and buyers can look forward to some decent performance upgrades to match the showy wide-body exterior.

Mansory has managed to extract 625 kW and a wholesome 1 000 N.m from Mercedes-AMG’s 4,0-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine, which produces 430 kW and 850 N.m in the ‘standard’ G63 model upon which this vehicle is based.

Mansory hasn’t yet mentioned how it achieved these outputs, but the performance figures do look impressive, with the tuner claiming a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 3,5 seconds, which makes it a full second faster than the regular G63.

Electric G-Class Coming to Munich Motor Show

A report is suggesting we’ll be seeing an electric G-Class at this year’s IAA Munich car show. Here’s what we know so far.

Mercedes-Benz is rapidly expanding its electrification program and the EQ badge is being rolled out to its entire product portfolio. We’ve already seen the production versions of the EQA, EQB, EQC and EQS which are confirmed for South Africa in 2022. Now, according to MBPassion blog, the mighty Mercedes-Benz G-Class will be going electric and we’ll see it at a motor show in Germany before the end of 2021.

This news shouldn’t come as a surprise as Daimler CEO Ola Kallenius mentioned this back in March 2020 in an interview with CarAdvice. “Yes, the G is going to go electric, we have kicked off the concept work for this, so in a few years you’ll be able to go electric with the G as well,” Mr Källenius said.

An electric G-Class will be quite the opposite to what the product is known for. The Mercedes-AMG G63 features a potent 4.0-litre biturbo V8 petrol engine, while the G400d boasts the strong straight-6 diesel. Let’s not forget the advanced 4×4 system with its 3 differentials either. So, what’s on the cards for the electric G-Class? We suspect that that 4×4 system is non-negotiable and Mercedes-Benz will incorporate the electric powertrain around it. An electric motor on each axle would likely be the best solution and given the G-Class size, a large battery which is good for at least 500 km is expected.

All-electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class to be previewed at this year’s IAA

In a push to diversify its all-electric EQ line-up, it’s understood that an all-electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class bearing the EQG moniker will be taking the stage as a concept to precede a fully electric off-road offering. This new example is rumoured to make its debut at this year’s IAA in Munich this September.

According to MBPassion.de, the all-electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class will not be an all-new development but rather a conversion of the original G-Class to a pure electric drivetrain. The concept set to be revealed may be offered with different states of tune and battery sizes but the brand’s 4Matic all-wheel drive system using two electric motors will be standard fit throughout the range. With this, it’ll house a number of crucial off-roading features such as differential locks and hill descent.

No performance data has been sourced for the all-electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class but it’s understood that flagship models may bear the 560 and 580 badges, offering over 368 kW from a 108 kWh battery pack that is integrated into the heritage model’s ladder frame construction. With this, it’ll boast a claimed range of 500 km on a full charge. A production-ready example of this model is expected to be revealed in late 2022 or early 2023.

Mercedes-AMG G63 driver, nabbed at 209km/h, ‘needed the toilet’

We can all sympathise with someone who urgently ‘needs to go’, but legally speaking that certainly won’t serve as an excuse for driving at over 200 km/h on the freeway. A driver in the UK recently found that out the hard way when she was caught driving at speeds of up to 209 km/h.

According to social media posts by the Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit, the driver was caught doing an average speed of 181.8 km/h, with speeds varying between 160 km/h and 209 km/h, in her Mercedes-AMG G63.

The driver claimed she was driving that speed because she “needed the toilet”, however police say she was driving so fast that she didn’t even notice that she had passed a service station.

To make matters worse, the driver only holds a provisional licence, which is the equivalent of South Africa’s learner’s licence, and she was driving unsupervised. The Derbyshire Constabulary said that the vehicle was seized, and the driver will presumably face a court of law fairly soon.

Is that for real? These pre-owned Mercedes-AMG G63 models cost more than a new one

• The Mercedes-AMG G63 is priced from R3.3 million in SA.

• Under its bonnet is a bi-turbo V8 engine.

• The list shows pre-owned G63 models more expensive than a brand new one.

Mercedes-Benz have some formidable weapons in their local AMG line-up, and one SUV model, in particular, holds a certain acclaim 1) because of its boxy shape and 2) the price tag.

As a whole, Mercedes-AMG models don't come cheap, and the brutal G63 is no exception to the rule - warranting a starting price tag of R3.3 million in South Africa.

Under its bonnet is a bi-turbo V8 engine that channels 430kW and 850Nm to all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission. It accelerates from 0-100km/h in 4.5 seconds and runs to a limited top speed of 220km/h.

Old car, new price

Over the last couple of decades, the price of new vehicles has increased rapidly, and the exorbitant price tags have not served as a deterrent for buyers in the market.

Listed on the local Autotrader dealer classifieds are a number of pre-owned G-Wagon's whose price tags well exceed what it goes for brand-new, with the most expensive one listed for just under R5-million.

Spy Shots: 2021 Mercedes-Benz G4x4

The new 2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class G4x4 Squared has been spied undergoing testing yet again, perhaps for the last time before it’s fully revealed. The most hardcore iteration of the Gelandewagen is on the way!

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is one very capable offroader, but what if you wanted even more? Mercedes-Benz introduced the G500 4×4 Squared as a short-wheelbase SUV complete with monster tyres and huge ground clearance back in 2015. Now it appears there’s a replacement on the cards and it’s expected to be revealed at the Munich Motor Show in September 2021

This is not the first time we’re seeing this model (last year’s spy shots can be seen in the gallery below) but these latest photos show the offroader wearing a military-like paint job. There’s not much camouflage to hide the bodywork which indicates that its full reveal is imminent.

Mercedes primes luxury EQG electric G-Class 4x4

Electric G-Wagen will harness EQS battery and motors for supreme off-road capability by 2024

Mercedes-Benz will preview the long-mooted electrification of its G-Class SUV with a concept at the Munich motor show that will spearhead the roll-out of a 4x4 sub-brand.

It has been nearly two years since CEO Ola Källenius confirmed that the Magna-built Land Rover Defender rival – launched in 1979 as the G-Wagen – would gain an allelectric variant, also predicting that “the last Mercedes built will be a G-Class”.

A production version is due in 2024, by which point most of the mainstream models in the Mercedes line-up will be available with electric power.

The Munich show car is expected to reveal how the G-Class will be restyled and reconfigured for the electric age, with design and interior cues that closely preview the final production model – much like how 2019’s Vision EQS concept proved a prelude to the new EQS luxury limousine.

Given how subtly the G-Class has evolved since its arrival 42 years ago, it is unlikely that Mercedes will reinvent its characteristically rugged two-box design, but a host of new styling cues that bring it into line with other EQ-badged models are expected.

A new-shape, one-piece front grille will be the chief differentiator over the ICE-powered car, as is the case for the GLB-based EQB, but new wheel designs and light clusters and a revamped rear end will help to distinguish the EQG from the G-Class.

Electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class: new details emerge

As previously reported, an electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class is currently being primed for production as part of Daimler’s EV offensive. Set to be revealed in concept guise at this year’s IAA, we now have some new information regarding the next step for this heritage SUV.

Based on information sourced by Autocar, it’s suggested that a production-ready example of an electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class will be available by 2024 and bear the EQG moniker. By this point, it’s likely that most cars offered by Mercedes-Benz will be electrified in some way.

For the show car that will be unveiled in Munich fairly soon, consumers will get their first look at how the electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class will be restyled and reconfigured for the age of electrification. The design that we’ll get to see will closely represent the final product both inside and out much like how the EQS concept did.

Mercedes-Benz G-Class G400d 2021 UK review

Should I buy one?

The G400d is undoubtedly a machine of incredible capability and versatility, and one that truly blends utility and luxury into a hugely compelling package, albeit at a price. It feels special, and is a truly easy car to live with (although it might struggle to fit in your local supermarket car park). That said, there’s a relatively small pool of people who will truly exploit the G400d’s capability, and for multiple reasons those who won’t might want to consider looking elsewhere.

Still, if the nuclear apocalypse ever arrives, the G400d will allow you to experience it in true luxury. If Max Mad had driven a G instead of his V8 Interceptor, he might not have been so grump when he reached the Thunderdome.
