Wide body G-Class unveiled by tuning company Project Kahn

So you’re the kind of person for whom a normal Mercedes-Benz G-Class just doesn’t cut the mustard… Sure, there’s an AMG version, but you really want to stand out in the crowd. Enter Project Kahn stage right, with yet another bedazzled variation on the flashy performance car theme.

Renowned the world over for developing modern variations of iconic high-powered vehicles, Project Kahn’s team has spent the last year developing what they refer to as a “comprehensive” new look for the iconic G-Class – they call it the Mercedes G Class Carbon Wide Track edition.

Talk about doing what the box (literally) says, the G Class Carbon Wide Track edition is both wide and festooned with carbon. It features widened front and rear wings, carbon bonnet overlay, lower bumper spoiler, front grille, rear roof spoiler and a roof shield. The pièce de resistance of any Kahn creation is of course the wheels, and the Mercedes G-Class Carbon Wide Track edition is no different with its Kahn Type 57 Monoblock forged wheels at 23-inches. Their design features simple clean lines, soft organic surfaces on the edge of the spoke and a “purposeful mechanical centre.”

Mercedes-Benz Concept EQG to become electric G-Class by 2025

Fan-favourite 4x4 will gain an all-electric option with improved off-road ability

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class will gain an electric variant by 2025 in the rugged SUV’s most radical transformation since it first appeared in 1979.

As scooped by Autocar recently, the EQG will be a close visual relation to the current internal combustion-powered car but with a raft of styling revisions that bring it into line with Mercedes’ new EQ line of electric cars.

It has been previewed at Munich in the form of the Concept EQG, which is described as a near-production study.

The makeover is subtle, extending chiefly to illuminated trim elements, a solid panel with a 3D star pattern replacing the front grille, bespoke 22in aluminium wheels and a storage box in place of the spare-wheel-carrier, designed to look like a wallbox charger.

Mercedes draws attention also to the Concept EQG’s roof rack, which houses a bright LED strip along its front edge to hint at the potential for this electric G-Class to undertake “demanding off-road adventures”.

Mercedes-Benz EQG Concept

With the Concept EQG, Mercedes-Benz presents the near-production study of an all-electric model variant of its utilitarian off-road icon. Visually, the concept car combines the unmistakably striking look of the G-Class with selected design elements typical of all-electric models from Mercedes as contrasting highlights. The 4x4 qualities of the "G", which have always set the highest standard, will not only find their way into the age of electric mobility, but will be developed even further in some areas. The Concept EQG thus offers a promising preview of what a Mercedes-Benz G-Class with battery-electric drive will be capable of.

At the world premiere of the current model generation of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class in Detroit in January 2018, Hollywood great Arnold Schwarzenegger, star guest and ardent "G" fan, elicited a promise from the then Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, Dieter Zetsche, that was unexpected for many at the time: The upcoming electrification of all model series would of course also include the G-Class. Just under three and a half years later, Mercedes-Benz is making good on this promise and presenting the Concept EQG, a near-production study of an all-electric G-Class. "Wherever market conditions permit, Mercedes-Benz will be ready to go fully electric by the end of the decade," emphasises Markus Schäfer, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and COO of Mercedes-Benz Cars. "With this strategic step from 'Electric first' to 'Electric only', including sustainable production and the CO2-neutral life cycle of our batteries, we are accelerating the transformation to a zero-emission and software-driven future. We want to inspire our customers to switch to electric mobility with convincing products. An icon like the G-Class fulfils this task perfectly."

The Mercedes G-Class has gone electric: this is the EQG concept

Merc makes good on its promise to Schwarzenegger to build an electric G

Good grief. As Mercedes advances towards it declared goal of 'electric-only', even the most unlikely candidates are being shifted to battery power. Welcome to the EQG. Here at the Munich motor show as a concept, but coming very soon as a production car.

At first, it might seem like the polar (bear) opposite of all the thuggish V8 G63 stands for. And yet Mercedes says it will be just as capable off-road as the combustion version.

Four motors are the key: one for each wheel, for what should be astounding traction and controllability, with max torque at zero revs. They'll have two-speed transmissions too.
The EQG will keep the ladder-frame chassis and live rear axle of the regular G-Class. So it's absolutely not some wimpish crossover.

The batteries, of unspecified capacity at this stage, will be wedged into that chassis frame. That'll keep the centre of gravity low, a handy thing when you're dangling on some hillside at an improbable angle. It'll also have the gumption to climb a 45-degree slope.

It's a concept, so natch gets some spangly concept design tweaks, not all of which will make production. We can't see the polished 22s being the ideal wheel for forging a path between rocks. The exterior protection strips have been backlit, and there's also a roof rack with peripheral striplights. The two-tone paint emphasises the clamshell bonnet. Instead of the tailgate spare wheel cover, there's a box for the charge cables.

Mercedes Concept EQG unveiled as near-production electric G-Class

It’s official. The iconic Gelandewagen will survive the electric era and the new Mercedes-Benz Concept EQG, which was revealed at the IAA Munich motor show this week, shows us what to expect.

Although technically it’s a concept car, Mercedes describes it as a near-production study of the upcoming all-electric G-Class.

The Concept EQG is evidently based around the same rugged ladder-frame architecture as the regular Mercedes-Benz G-Class, but there are some notable design differences, including an illuminated panel that replaces the grille. The concept is also set apart by a two-tone exterior paint scheme and 22-inch polished alloy wheels. Round back the spare wheel cover has been replaced by a lockable box that can be used to store the charging cable.

The Mercedes-Benz Concept EQG is powered by four individually controlled electric motors, with one mounted on each wheel. This set-up, Mercedes promises, will ensure uncompromising off-road ability of the kind that G-Class customers have come to expect. The vehicle also comes with a shiftable two-speed gearbox, offering low-range gearing for tackling challenging terrain.

Mercedes has not mentioned any performance or range figures as yet, but these will no doubt be provided as the production version nears reality.

Mercedes-Benz Concept EQG revealed as all-electric G-Wagon

The Mercedes-Benz Concept EQG has been revealed as a fully electric G-Class catering to consumers who wish to get the full 4×4 experience without causing too much harm to the environment. The new concept acts as a loyal preview to what we can expect for the final production-ready model.

The Mercedes-Benz Concept EQG maintains the ICE G-Wagon’s ladder frame chassis to maintain its off-roading prowess. Like the current generation model, it employs a front independent suspension with a rear rigid axle that has been developed for the integration of an electric drive.

An electric motor has been placed on each of the wheels which give the Mercedes-Benz Concept EQG an individual all-wheel drive system. This is controlled via a two-speed transmission tuned for off-roading versatility.

The battery powering these motors is positioned into the ladder frame to ensure a low centre of gravity. Thanks to the instant torque provided by the electric motors, the German manufacturer believes that this new concept will boast enormous pulling power and controllability which is advantageous on steep slopes and deep terrain.

Mercedes-Benz EQG is the future of Gelandewagen

A very un-aero EV, from a nameplate that’s decidedly old school.

Mercedes-Benz has revealed an electrified version of its most iconic vehicle.

The EQG concept takes the same steel ladder-frame platform that Gelandewagen is built upon and futureproofs it. That is the theory, at least.

In appearance, this EQG has kept the proportions and two-box design of Gelandenwagen, although the detailing has changed. The conventional front grille is replaced by a closed panel and LED lighting has been added nearly everywhere else.

Some of the stranger details are those round LEDs that sit on the wing mirror caps and the rectangular tailgate cover. Gelandewagen is known for its traditional tailgate spare wheel mount, but it appears that EQG will repurpose this legacy design feature as a plug-in charge port of some type, or a storage box.

Rolling the EQG along are polished 22-inch wheels that aren’t too dissimilar to the Monoblocks seen on Mercedes-Benz’s latest GLS update.

The Gelandewagen has been available with huge wheels for many years, but the tyres make this EQG configuration notable. If you look closely, they have a very low-resistance tread pattern, incompatible with gravel road touring or any off-road driving.

Aside from the images and naming convention, Mercedes-Benz has not revealed much about the EQG’s technical specifications. We don’t know the battery pack size or electric motor power output.

Mercedes-Benz G-Class Professional Line revealed for off-roading pros

The G-Class Professional Line is back, along with added equipment and new packages for the entire G-Class range, announced at IAA Mobility after the EQG made its debut, too.

The G-Class has been a huge success for Mercedes-Benz over the past 42 years – over 400 000 of them have been produced under license by Magna Steyr in Austria with an interestingly broad customer base, from turnip farmers to bedazzled rappers, businesspeople to trophy partners. There’s no denying the universal appeal of the legendary ‘G-Wagon’.

Mercedes-Benz call it “the ultimate dream car for four-wheeled adventurers” – the G-Class Professional Line. With a focus on ruggedness and off-road capability, the Professional features standard items such as stone guard grilles for the headlights, mud flaps front and rear, as well as chunky tyres and 18-inch, 5-spoke wheels. In addition to the above, a wide range of options are available through the G manufaktur customisation programme, with the show car featuring options such as the striking G manufaktur copper orange magno paintwork and Night package which blacks out the exterior mirror housings, Mercedes star and number plate holder.

The show car also features the Professional Line spare wheel holder on the rear door and the Professional Line roof rack on which a roof tent can be erected among other things, hinting at the adventurous nature of this model in the G-Class line-up.

G&B’s Boss kit festoons the W463 G-Class with carbon and lots of corners

So you have a G-Class, but the new ‘G’ has come out and you’re the kind of person that would still like to stand out…
Luckily, G&B Design in Recklinghausen, Germany have just the thing for you – it’s called the G&B Boss.

Consisting of a number of add-on elements, the widebody kit/aerodynamic package is suitable for all W463 generation G-Class Mercedes-Bens’s (2000-2018) and will most certainly make a statement.

Let's Give It Up To Mercedes-Benz For Making Some Really Bonkers Promo Videos

Most car company PR is ridiculous, but it's nice to see a company really lean hard into ridiculous

Mercedes’ EQG concept is already a bit bonkers, an all-electric version of their famous, brick-like off-roader-turned-absurd-luxo-cruiser with the rear-mounted spare tire replaced with a box for charging cables and a grille made of dancing LED lights. Whatever, it’s a fun EV concept. And, I have to give Mercedes-Benz credit for not just making the usual, forgettable, fancy people doing fancy **** kind of promo video and instead giving people what they really want: subtitled squid aliens in close up.

Just look at that screenshot right there; that’s from a major automaker’s promotional video. From Mercedes-****ing-Benz’ promotional video, and I hope whoever had this idea is getting a big fat raise and one of those cookie bouquets where the cookies are impaled on wooden dowels.

The videos are done in a deliberate late ‘70s sci-fi style, to tie into the original G-Wagen’s 1979 introduction, and Benz’ people were even careful enough to do most of it in the old 4:3 aspect ratio

Rare G500 Final Edition 200 up for auction in St Moritz

One of the longest running models in automotive history, the W463 Geländewagen was in production from 1990 until 2019. It saw cosmetic, specification and powertrain changes throughout its production run, but the basic chassis and architecture remained mostly unchanged.

Unintentionally, it landed up becoming Mercedes-Benz’s first luxury SUV, being renamed in 1994 as the ‘G-Class’. It was offered in three guises; three-door short-wheelbase, two-door short-wheelbase cabriolet, or five-door long-wheelbase.

During its lifetime, a wide array of engine, gearbox and trim levels were offered, but one of the most popular of the bunch proved to be the G500 Cabriolet. In 2013 at the International Mobility Show in Frankfurt, the G500 Cabriolet Final Edition was debuted, marking the end of two-door G-Class production and limited to just 200 units, all of which were sold prior to the vehicle’s premiere.

Distinguishing Final Edition models from the rest of the range were a number of tell-tale features such as “Final Edition 200” badges on the B-pillars, 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, electric soft top and colour matched tonneau, and a stainless steel rear wheel cover and kick plates, as well as a Designo leather interior.

Power came from Mercedes-Benz’s venerable M273 5,5-litre V8 motor, producing 285 kW and 540 N.m which was enough to propel beach Barbie’s G-Class to 100 km/h in just 6,2 seconds. Mercedes-Benz’ often-praised 7G-Tronic seven-speed automatic transmission was mated to the petrol mill.

This is an old G-Class, to remind us what’s missing in the new one

Much like a Hiwatt amp, Lorinser’s all about the headroom

Question: what’s the biggest problem with the new G-Wagen?

If you’re anything like us, it’ll be that Mercedes insists on calling the thing a G-Class, as if it’s just another class of vehicle in Merc’s vast, almost byzantine model range. If we were dealing with anyone but Merc, you’d expect the G to be broken off into its own sub-brand by now.

If you’re from the Lorinser family, on the other hand, you’ll find fault in something that’s perhaps equally specific but resoundingly more fun to demonstrate: you could buy the old G with a soft top; no such luck with the new ’un.

And, as if to remind us of what we’re missing, they’ve tarted up an old G500 cabrio, proving once and for all that the unsung genius of the old G-Wagen is the blank canvas it presents. If you want a proper, military-grade Gelandewagen, it’s yours. If you want to announce your arrival (and that you’re an arriviste), a few decidedly unsubtle tweaks will get you there. And if you crave 62 miles of headroom, the colour scheme of a Dachshund and a woofling V8 under the bonnet, it might be time to place a call to Lorinser.

Now, if you’re not too familiar with Lorinser, it’s a family-run Mercedes dealership and workshop near Stuttgart. And for those not too familiar with German geography, Stuttgart is a lovely spot in Deutschland’s southwest. It’s also pretty much Germany’s motor city, with names like Gottlieb Daimler, Robert Bosch and Ferdinand Porsche all calling it home at some point. Also, and this may be beside the point, but so did Georg Herwegh, who must be in the running for the angriest poet ever. But, as ever, we digress.

Fostla details its Brabus 800 Widestar Mercedes-AMG G-Class

You know how the saying goes, another week, another G-Class with a body kit. Or something to that effect. Fostla Concepts is a Hanover-based company that has made a name for itself by providing striking yet cost effective body kits to customers of high-end vehicles.

In addition to this, Fostla is also a gold partner of Brabus which means that they are able to offer official Brabus conversions which can then be fitted at their own headquarters.

The Brabus 800 made by Fostla is its latest creation – a Merecedes-AMG G63 fitted with Brabus’ full 800 package, as well as the Widestar body kit. Carbon fibre is the theme of the day here, with the front with skirts, radiator grille, the hood extension, and roof extension above the windshield that includes LED auxiliary lights all being made from the material. The mirror caps and fender flares behind the axles, as well as the spare wheel cover and the spoiler end plates are all made from carbon fibre, and just to finish it off, the underbody guards are made from CFRP, too.

As if the body kit wasn’t a statement on its own, one’s eyes are immediately drawn to the 24-inch Monoblock Z “Platinum Edition” forged wheels. Brabus Ridecontrol coilover suspension lowers the ‘G’ sufficiently allowing the gigantic wheels to completely fill the SUV’s flared arches.

Mercedes-Benz Teases Geländewagen Bakkie

A new, more hardcore military-grade Geländewagen has been revealed – with Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) and in single-cab guise…

Never underestimate heritage and the appeal of styling and design.

Mercedes-Benz’s Geländewagen has proven, for decades, that you can make old-school work in evolving markets. It has never gone off-trend and now there is the potential for true contemporary retro gold, with a new version of the W464.

Gelandenwagen enthusiasts who pine for the classic 1980s grille and sand beige colourway might have hope for Mercedes-Benz to provide these design details for private buyers – in time.

A deeply successful but undermarketed part of the Gelandenwagen business is its military and government agency customers. These fleet users are never in the market for a G63 or anything with enormous alloy wheels and elaborate leather cabin trim.

The first images of this new utilitarian W464 have leaked and it shows all those details that make Gelandenwagen followers giddy with excitement. The standard factory snorkel. Large volume tyres. Winch and bullbar mounting point on a steel front bumper.

Recognizing that military and government customers always require superior road surface illumination, especially when Gelandenwagens are used for search and rescue work, the most utilitarian W464 has upgraded to LED headlights with DRLs.
