Mercedes-AMG G63 Edition 55 celebrates brand anniversary

Special edition of V8-engined luxury off-roader celebrates 55 years of in-house performance brand

Mercedes-AMG has unveiled a special edition of the G-Class to celebrate 55 years of the AMG brand.

Based on the G63, the Edition 55 is only available in either Obsidian Black or G Manufaktur Opalite White, with both colours featuring a side stripe showing a close-up of the AMG badge.

The Edition 55 sits on 22in matt-grey wheels, while many exterior details finished in gloss black. The fuel filler cap is finished in chrome, with AMG engraved into it.

Inside, black and red leather covers most of the cabin, while carbonfibre details can also be found, and a number of Edition 55 badges mark it out from the standard G63.

Mechanically, it's unchanged from the regular G63, so it has a 577bhp twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre petrol V8 that can propel it from 0-62mph in 4.5sec and on to a top speed of 137mph.

UK prices are yet to be announced, but the car will cost €299,222 in Europe – equivalent to £248,915. Order books are open now but will close in November.

This special Mercedes G63 celebrates 55 years of AMG

Want a special version of a special G-Class? You’ve got until October

You might call this a two-and-a-half tonne, 577bhp V8-powered anniversary present. You might also call it the Mercedes-AMG G63 ‘Edition 55’, largely because that’s exactly what it is.

Yup, who’s feeling old now? It’s the year of German performance division anniversaries, because while BMW’s M turns 50, AMG – founded in 1967 by a pair of former Daimler-Benz engineers – turns 55 in 2022.

And while we’re promised “more birthday surprises” to follow in the coming months, one of them has crashed the party early. It is a G63 after all. This special Edition 55 is available in either obsidian black metallic or bright white exterior paint. There are 22in AMG forged alloys finished in grey, and the fitment of both the AMG Night Package and AMG Night Package II. Sequels are always better anyway.

Elsewhere there’s Edition 55 lettering and badging, an interior trimmed in red und black, some steel door sill trims, matt carbon elements and a few other appointments. Nothing spectacular, but then there’s the small matter of a not-so-small 4.0-litre biturbo V8 up front doing a fine job of emancipating expensive petrol from its material form via the medium of 577bhp and 627lb ft of torque.

AMG boss Philip Schiemer is keen to look to the future of the G, mind: “Just as the G‑Class will lose nothing of its original character in its future all-electric variant, Mercedes‑AMG is also ensuring the hallmark driving performance made in Affalterbach in its electrified future.

Mercedes-AMG celebrates anniversary in style with G63 Edition 55

You might not think that AMG has been around for that long, but the performance specialist has been delighting the world with its creations for 55 years now.

It all started back in the 1960s when engineers Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher started working on Mercedes racing engines for the German Touring Car series. Following numerous motorsport successes, the company was gradually incorporated into the Mercedes corporate machine, something that was finalised in 1999, and today the division produces more than 50 different performance vehicles.

To celebrate this latest milestone, Mercedes-AMG has announced a special edition Geländewagen called the G 63 "Edition 55". Available in obsidian black metallic or white bright paint, the vehicle is further distinguished by 22-inch AMG cross-spoke alloy wheels in a matt tantalum grey finish. The edition is also fitted with the AMG Night Package and attention to detail extends as far as the fuel filler cap, which is in silver chrome with AMG lettering.

A contrasting black and red colour scheme defines the interior, including the two-tone nappa leather seats, and stainless steel door sill trims welcome the driver with red illuminated AMG lettering. You’ll also find “AMG 55” lettering on the steering wheel and the velour floor mats feature red “Edition 55” embroidery. Matt carbon interior trim elements round off the cabin garnishes.

Owners can also look forward to a customised AMG Indoor Car Cover, featuring a breathable outer skin and an antistatic inner fabric made of flannel.

Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG Edition 55 Revealed

To celebrate 55 years of AMG, there’s a special edition G-Class. This is the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG Edition 55

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is an iconic and popular luxury SUV, both locally and abroad. The AMG derivative has gathered a cult following, combining rugged good looks, high-end interior and a potent V8 twin-turbocharged petrol engine.

Now, to celebrate 55 years of the AMG brand, Mercedes-Benz has announced a limited edition model of its legendary offroader. It’s called the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG Edition 55 and will be limited to just, yes you guessed it, 55 units for the US market. For the rest of the world, Edition 55 will be sold as an option pack for the standard G-Class.

“From a two-man start-up in 1967 to a state-of-the-art development site including its own engine manufacturing facility for high-performance vehicles and more than 2000 excellently qualified employees in 2022 – the success story of Mercedes-AMG over the past 55 years is simply impressive. The same applies to the G-Class, which has remained true to itself for over four decades in the course of its unique career. Its long history and still genuine character makes it the perfect first well-wisher for me on our 55th birthday. “

Brabus 900 Crawler Is A Wild Mercedes-AMG G63 Buggy Packing 888 HP (662 kW)

Now, this we did not see coming but this wild Brabus creation is absolutely epic.

The Brabus 900 Crawler is a hardcore buggy designed to be the “ultimate desert dunes racer” and as the title suggests, it is based on the Mercedes-AMG G63.

Yes, the doorless and windowless G-Wagon can’t be driven on public streets as the aftermarket specialist didn’t want to make any compromises just for the sake of keeping the license plate.

The ground clearance comes in at 53 cm (20.8 inches) which should mean it can live up to its ‘crawler’ name. Brabus fitted the crazy build with portal axles to enhance the vehicle’s go-anywhere capabilities. Attached to these axles you will find one-piece forged wheels with meaty 40×13.50 R20 off-road tyres, backed by 400-mm front and 370-mm rear disc brakes.

Under the hood, you will find the potent Brabus tuned 4.5-litre twin-turbo V8 delivering 888 hp (662 kW) and 1,250 Nm (922 lb-ft) of torque.

Despite being built to hit the path less travelled, it can still run to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.4 seconds. The top speed is down to 160 km/h (100 mph) due to the mammoth off-road tyres.

The Brabus 900 Crawler is a 900bhp desert racer with the face of a G Wagen

Mad Merc tuner celebrates its 45th birthday with a wild four-seat dune basher

And you thought Brabus’ mainstream modified Mercedes’ were crazy creations. This is the all-new Brabus 900 Crawler. Built to celebrate the Bottrop-based tuner’s 45th birthday, it’s a non-road legal desert racer made with a high-strength tubular frame chassis and bearing the face of a G Wagen. Weren’t expecting that today, were you?

The Crawler (slightly creepy name) will be limited to just 15 cars built over the next three years, and each one will get a Mercedes-sourced twin-turbo V8 bored out to 4.5-litres and turned up to 888bhp and 922lb ft of torque.

The wild Brabus-spec G Wagen body is crafted from exposed carbon fibre, and up on that separate roof section is a rear spoiler and a lightbar. Because everything needs a lightbar.

Brabus Crawler

BRABUS was founded in 1977 by Bodo Buschmann and celebrates its 45th anniversary in 2022. For the occasion, the engineers, technicians and designers of the German high-end company developed their first supercar with proprietary chassis and buggy-style, four-seater body made from high-strength exposed carbon. The development goal was to build the ultimate racer for having terrific fun driving in desert dunes. To achieve this goal without compromises, they designed the BRABUS 900 CRAWLER, an exclusive high-performance off-roader that is not street legal.

To give this supercar the kind of outstanding rigidity that can effortlessly handle even the toughest off-road driving, a special tubular frame was designed using state-of-the-art CAD technology. The chassis with integral safety cell is manufactured from high-strength steel and then painted bright BRABUS Red.

The suspension mounts of this chassis are designed for maximum strength and accommodate the portal axles at the front and rear, which were designed specifically for this supercar. This type of design raises the position of the engine, transmission, differentials and half-shafts, which requires engineering special wheel ends with integral portal gearbox to compensate for this height difference in driving the wheels. All special components required for this are milled from solid pieces of high-strength aluminum. This includes the wheel ends, all control arms, the integral subframe of the independent suspension on the front axle and the axle housing of the beam axle at the rear. This complex design enabled the BRABUS chassis developers to achieve a maximum ground clearance of 53 centimeters (20.9 in), which is extremely advantageous when operating in rough terrain.

Fancy a G-Class desert buggy with 662kW? Meet the Brabus 900 Crawler

If you have a stack of cash, a nearby desert and the burning desire to be a Dakar Rally driver, you might want to check out the new Brabus 900 Crawler.

As you can see this is no ordinary Mercedes-AMG G-Class, and it’s also not street legal for that matter. Designed as an “uncompromising fun car for use far off paved roads” the Brabus 900 Crawler boasts a high-strength tubular frame and four-seater exposed-carbon body.

But what really does the hard work is its heavy-duty off-road chassis. Thanks to portal axles, this off-roading supercar boasts a ground clearance of 530mm. The German tuner also developed special height-adjustable struts, which provide up to 160mm of spring travel.

The Brabus 900 Crawler rolls on 20-inch Brabus Monoblock forged wheels with off-road tyres.

To exploit this impressive chassis to its fullest, the tuner has installed its Brabus 900 Rocket twin-turbo V8, which is a bored out version of AMG’s familiar eight-cylinder powerhouse, now displacing 4.5 litres.

Mercedes EQG will have longer range thanks to Silicon Anode battery

Don’t expect the Mercedes-Benz EQG to turn up at your local showroom any time soon. Although it was unveiled last year in September, there are no plans for it to be manufactured before 2024. There is a good side to the waiting though, as it will enable the EQG to become the very first Mercedes-Benz car with a battery that uses the silicon anode chemistry.

This technology is gaining mainstream momentum, with Volvo investing in StoreDot and its fast charging high density cells, Mercedes-Benz is pushing development in the same direction.

Battery cells are reaching limits of their physical size, we cannot keep making them bigger and heavier batteries as it makes little financial sense. Manufacturers are working at increasing the density of batteries thus putting more energy in the same size of packaging. The silicon anode is one of those promising technologies, with recent advancements promising as much as 40% increase in energy density with more than 800Wh/l at the cell level - for comparison the EQXX concept that reached 1,000 km range on single charge has energy density of 400Wh/l.

AMG G63 based Brabus 900 XLP will be limited to 10 units

The Bottrop based tuner has been at it again and this time debuts their AMG G63 based Brabus 900 XLP with a healthy 662 kW. The bespoke performance bakkie will be limited to a production run of only 10 units which is why it demands such an eye-watering price tag.

Not too long ago, Brabus unveiled the bonkers 800 Adventure XLP which is also an AMG G63 based model that was capable of a mere 588 kW and 1,000 Nm. This was apparently insufficient for the tuner who has now taken the same base-model and turned it up to eleven. The latest Brabus 900 XLP now employs a sizable 4,4-litre V8 underneath the muscular bonnet which packs a whopping 662 kW and 1,250 N.m compliments of the original turbochargers being replaced by Brabus’ bespoke pair. The torque is limited to 1,050 N.m to ensure powertrain longevity and make sure nothing gets too twisted under all of the torque.

Courtesy of the stroked displacement and powertrain tweaks, the Brabus 900 XLP can sprint to 100 km/h in 4,4 seconds and top out at 210 km/h. This has been limited considering it is running Pirelli Scorpion ATR all-terrain tyres which measure in at 325/55 and wrap around 22-inch forged wheels which have splashes of red all around their circumference and spokes.

Mercedes' EQG does the Tank turn on video

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class's fully-electric counterpart is coming in 2024 and if there is any doubt that it will live up to the high expectations of the ongoing model, we can dispel it right now. The Mercedes EQG will have four electric motors - one for each tire - and will be able to perform the famous 'Tank Turn' maneuver, where the car can rotate 360-degrees on its own axis.

Mercedes showcased the move in a presentation, which included the snipped of the EQG and the move. The Tank Turn is achieved when the tires on one side of the car rotate in the opposite direction of the ones on the other.
