Brabus unveils two (588 kW) Mercedes-AMG G63 models!

German tuner Brabus has lifted the wraps off not one but two new limited-edition “high-performance off-roaders” based on the latest Mercedes-AMG G63.

Dubbed the "Black Ops 800" and "Shadow 800", these models are bespoke versions of the Brabus 800 Widestar, which the company revealed in March 2019. Just ten units of each will be built.

Like the Widestar 800, each employs an uprated version of the G63's twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 petrol engine, which as standard produces 430 kW and 850 N.m of torque. As the number in the model names suggests, the engine has been tuned to churn out 800 hp (that's a whopping 588 kW in our language). Peak torque output comes in at an equally impressive 1 000 N.m, which is available from 3 600 r/min.

According to the Bottrop-based firm, both tuned G models will complete the 0-100 km/h sprint-time in just 4,1 seconds, before topping out at an electronically limited 240 km/h. Mercedes-AMG claims the standard G63 will reach the 100 km/h mark from standstill in 4,5 seconds (for the record, during a road test of the Mercdes-AMG G63, CAR achieved a time of 4,44 seconds).

Mercedes-AMG G63 channels Jimny, goes two-door in rendering

Well, that’s interesting. A digital artist has transformed the Mercedes-AMG G63 into a two-door model, giving Affalterbach’s angry off-roader proportions not far off those of the Suzuki Jimny.

And in a way it’s fitting because ever since the reveal of the Jimny, comparisons have been made between the tiny Japanese SUV and the German firm’s hulking Geländewagen. But this is the first time we’ve seen the G63 in short-wheelbase form … albeit digitally.

The convincing rendering – which we first spotted on autoevolution – comes courtesy of the folks over at Car News Network, who posted the image on their Instagram page (we’ve embedded said post below).

Mercedes-Benz opens new G-Class driving experience centre

Extreme off-road site replicates German car maker’s demanding Schoeckl test track

Mercedes-Benz has established a new G-Class experience centre near Graz, Austria as part of the 40th-anniversary celebrations for the recently upgraded off-roader.

Located close to the Magna manufacturing facility where the G-Class is produced, the new 100,000-square-metre site has been conceived to allow existing and prospective customers to familiarise themselves with the off-road capabilities of the traditional Mercedes-Benz model, which was first introduced as the G-Wagen in 1979 as a civilian version of the military vehicle commissioned by the Shah of Iran.

Set to open to the public in November, the experience centre aims to replicate the extreme off-road conditions of Mercedes-Benz’s demanding 3.5-mile Schoeckl test track – a mountainous course with inclines of up to 60% and roll angles up to 40% on which the G-Class has been developed and honed over the past four decades.

6 months after the launch of the new G350d Mercedes SA has zero clue as to what is going on.
I think that G400d leak threw a couple spanners in the works.

Mercedes-Benz celebrates 40 years of G-Class with special ‘Stronger than time’ models

Mercedes-Benz has lifted the wraps off its special, “Stronger than time” G-Class models, celebrating four decades of the iconic off-roader and 20 years of AMG variants.

"Fourty years ago the combination of on- and off-road properties was a revolutionary concept. The current G-Class continues this tradition. Its top technological performance today forms the basis for its status as an automotive icon", says Dr Gunnar Güthenke, head of the Stuttgart-based automaker’s off-road vehicle product unit.

The anniversary edition line-up will comprise of petrol and diesel engines, with the latter powertrain exclusively available in “Stronger than time” Gs. The G400d derivative will employ the Stuttgart-based automaker’s 3,0-litre inline-six oil-burner (OM 656), which produces 243 kW and 700 N.m of torque from 3 400 to 4 600 r/min.

Mercedes-Benz G-Class G400d 4Matic 2019 review

Should I buy one?

The G400d is a worthy addition to the G-Class line-up. Its state-of-the-art diesel engine brings added performance and muscle to the frugal and serene properties already delivered by the G350d. This makes it a consummate on-road cruiser and just about unbeatable away from the bitumen, where its strong torque combines with its multi-faceted four-wheel drive system to take you places that other so-called off-roaders could only dream of.

The changes Mercedes has brought to the chassis of the G-Class have made it a far more endearing proposition than its predecessor both in everyday use around town and over longer journeys at motorway speeds. That said, for ultimate comfort and refinement, you’d be better served by the Range Rover SDV8, which arguably delivers a more luxurious experience for similar money.

But there’s something about the old-fashioned styling and high-set seats of the G-Class that appeals. It’s also remarkably well equipped, terrifically cosseting and boasts impeccably build quality for something that was originally conceived as a rough-and-tumble military vehicle in the 1970s.

It’s the sort of off-roader you’d choose with your heart, not your head. And it's certainly more authentic in character than the bonkers G63 from Mercedes-AMG.

Mercedes-AMG G63 boosted to 588 kW (and gains Vossen wheels)!

Since its release, the Mercedes-AMG G63 has become the inspiration behind many tuning projects. The latest company to unveil its uprated G63 is German firm Lorinser, a self-proclaimed “specialist” when it comes to modifying Stuttgart's finest.

The Lorinser-tuned Geländenwagen, seen here riding on 23-inch Vossen wheels in an candy apple red hue, has been equipped with a performance kit, sourced from Florida-based company RENNtech, which includes chip tuning, revised downpipes and a new sport exhaust system.

Thanks to these upgrades the power output of the standard G63's twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 petrol mill has been increased from 430 kW to a whopping 588 kW. The company makes no mention of the new torque output (the standard figure is already lofty at 850 N.m).

Mercedes-Benz G-Class handed extreme makeover, plus off-road kit

Once again, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class has gone under the knife. This time German firm Delta4x4 (remember that beefed-up Volkswagen Amarok?) has revealed its latest upgrades specifically designed to further enhance the G’s off-road prowess.

The G-Class (seen here donning a bright yellow hue) have been equipped with a myriad of mechanical modifications to aid Stuttgart’s most iconic SUV when going off the beaten track (not that it needed any help in the first place, though).
