Mercedes G-Class faced the axe, but batteries will save it

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been flirting with extinction in recent times, with top-level executives having even debated whether it even had a future. But now the company has instead decided to future-proof it for the electric car revolution.

As reported by Motor1, Daimler executive Sascha Pallenberg took to Twitter recently, quoting his boss, CEO Ola Källenius, on the future of the Geländewagen.

“There will be a zero-emission #EV version of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. In the past there were discussions on whether we should eliminate the model, the way I see things now I'd say the last Mercedes to be built will be a G-Class," Pallenberg said.

That certainly makes the future of the iconic 4x4 seem rather safe for now, although at this stage there are no other details about the electrified G-Class or any word on how much longer the petrol and diesel versions will continue to be offered.

Electric Mercedes G-Class Confirmed

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is the last car we can imagine going electric on us but it’s happening. Where are not sure when but it is going to happen.

Head of the digital transformation Sascha Pallenberg confirmed this on his Twitter account (see below), adding that “there will be a zero-emission EV version of the Mercedes G-Class.” The quote is attributed to none other than Daimler AG chief executive officer Ola Källenius, an advocate of electrification and a former member of the executive board for Mercedes-Benz Cars Development.

Mercedes G-Class to go electric, says Daimler boss

Daimler CEO Ola Kallenius suggests the last Mercedes to be built will be a G-Class and a zero-emissions version is on its way

The Mercedes G-Class will eventually be fully electric, according to Daimler boss Ola Källenius.

Källenius confirmed the electric variant at yesterday’s AMW Kongress in Berlin, soundbites of which were subsequently tweeted by Daimler digital transformation boss Sascha Pallenberg. This is the first time the company has gone on the record to confirm the car.

Brabus Goes on an Adventure

German tuner Brabus is famous for its performance upgrades, but this time the focus on enhancing the G-Class' offroad abilities.

The G-Class didn't exactly need its offroad abilities enhanced, with its 3 differentials, ground clearance and excellent approach/departure angles, but Brabus has been hard at work.

This is the Brabus Adventure, essentially a kit for the G 350d. Comprising some serious upgrades both visual and mechanical, the Brabus Adventure features a bodykit with huge intakes, undercar guard and tow winch. There is an abundance of carbon fibre thrown into the mix too. There's also a wind deflector with spot lights, a luggage rack and monstrous Brabus alloy wheels wrapped in chunky offroad tyres. There's an increase in the vehicle's ground clearance and the vehicle sits an extra 40 mm higher on top of the 217 mm already offered.

Mercedes-Benz G-Class to go Silent

The boxy Merc built on combustion engines to get batteries.

Mercedes-Benz took decades to advance its G-Class from the original car to a true second-generation vehicle.

Change might be coming much quicker for the brand’s boxy extreme 4x4 in future, as public perception and regulations make its staggering appetite for fuel untenable.

The G-Class is amongst Mercedes-Benz’s least efficient vehicles, despite having some of its most modern and contemporary engines. Featuring the least aerodynamic styling of any production Mercedes-Benz passenger vehicle, G-Class is a target for critique by European anti-car pressure groups.

Lumma Design adds yet more menace to the Mercedes-AMG G63

Earlier in 2019, Lumma Design revealed a pretty comprehensive kit for the latest Mercedes-AMG G63, dubbing the resulting vehicle the CLR G770. Now the German tuner has added some more kit to the G-Class.

New to the list of accessories are fresh front and rear bumpers plus side skirts. The six exhaust outlets have also been redesigned. What remains unchanged is the bonnet, roof cover with LED spotlights, side-mirror caps, door handles and rear spoiler. The majority of parts are finished in visible carbon-fibre.

Also new are the 23-inch F-utu-R forged alloy wheels by Lumma, finished in black with a central cap or high-gloss with visible chrome wheel bolts. A set of spacers has been added to lend the G63 a wider stance.

Angry Mercedes G63 Owner Drops It From A Helicopter

Publicly destroying cars because of reliability and/or service issues is nothing new but dropping it from a helicopter is taking it to a new height (pun intended).

A Russian vlogger decided his Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG was no longer worth keeping so he decided to lift the German SUV to a height of 300m and drop it to its demise on the snow-covered ground below.

Moroz (the vlogger) said on Instagram that the car has been a pain to own since he bought it as it constantly needed repairs and the dealership sometimes kept the car as long as a month to complete the work. The dealer even allegedly refused to repair some of the faults under warranty.
