Single preview is out ahead of next month’s reveal.

New Toyota RAV4 due next month with two hybrid options

Electrified line-up of fifth-gen SUV will be shown in New York

Toyota will reveal its fifth-generation RAV4 at next month’s New York motor show with two new hybrid powertrains.

Previewed in a single image, the upcoming rival to the Ford Kuga will share a pair of electrified powertrains with the recently revealed Auris that are based on a 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre engine respectively.

The smaller electrified unit, first introduced in the latest Prius, will have 121bhp, while the larger one will offer 178bhp and is the world's most thermally efficient engine in production.

A pure petrol option is also likely to be offered, although it is not yet known whether it will be based on the RAV4’s existing 2.0-litre engine or be a smaller unit, such as Toyota’s latest 1.2-litre petrol with 114bhp.

The new RAV4 will be based on Toyota’s New Global Architecture, which is an adaptable structure that also underpins the new Auris. Like the Auris, the new RAV4 will be launched without a diesel option, following dwindling diesel sales for the outgoing model.

By contrast, sales for the hybrid version accounted for 5523 of last year’s total 8519 RAV4 sales in Britain.

The loss of the RAV4 diesel model is part of wider plans to discontinue oil-burning models from the range by the year’s end. Diesel accounted for just 7% of Toyota’s total UK sales last year.

Toyota drops teaser for 2019 RAV4

One of South Africa’s most successful SUVs will soon be getting a brand new iteration. This will be revealed at the New York International Auto Show on the 28th of March.

While there isn’t a lot of information surrounding this new model, it is expected to share the same TNGA platform as the C-HR, Prius and the recently revealed Auris.

Powertrains have not been confirmed as well but seeing that it sits on the TNGA we could expect the 1,2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine and the 2,0-litre four-cylinder petrol-hybrid making an introduction into the range.

The current 2,0-litre and 2,5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder and 2,2-litre turbodiesel might be included as well.

As far as styling in concerned, the new RAV4 could possibly take the extreme approach similar to what we’ve seen in other models based on the TNGA. In fact, it might look quite close to the FT-AC Concept we saw at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

It's about time. The current one is getting a bit long in the tooth.

New Scooby Forester will be shown at the NY motor show as well. I'll make a thread for that once official pics are released.

Facelift helped greatly with the exterior. Interior though is rather dated.
I know about the interior yes - drove a few when I was working part-time for a designated driver service. Not to mention the clunky transmission, and automatic at that.

If this is what it really looks like, it is a HELL of an improvement.
Agreed, They've come a long way from this....

I still consider them to be high risk vehicles though...but that's just the Jozi paranoia showing. :whistling:

Toyota RAV4

All the stops have been pulled for the world debut of the all-new 2019 Toyota RAV4. The vehicle that created the small sport utility vehicle (SUV) segment made its fifth-generation debut at the 2018 New York International Auto Show.

Over the years, Toyota has listened to owners and dealers and it has paid off. Over the last five years, RAV4 volume has doubled, which speaks profoundly to the segment's attractiveness and growth, and ultimately, RAV4's popularity. RAV4 currently ranks as the number-one-selling vehicle in the Toyota lineup, as well as the best-selling non-pickup-truck in the country.

No matter the grade, every RAV4 is a winning choice, whether it's for a city exploration, a weekend trip to the countryside, or a jaunt on the trails. When it becomes available in the winter at the end of 2018 (with hybrid models right behind in early 2019), the all-new RAV4 will premiere, yet again, at the forefront - both for the Toyota brand and the segment.

Get Up and Go!

For the all-new Toyota RAV4, designers kept in mind design elements of Adventure and Refined to allow owners to get up and go in their RAV4, no matter the time or place. An emphasis was placed on maximizing the presence of a small SUV while maintaining high levels of finesse inside and out.

Each body panel has a sophisticated twist to it, with a chiseled appearance that is a perfect combination of athleticism and charisma. The stronger nose leads into a more dynamic profile, robust shoulders, and available 19-inch wheels, making for a powerful stance ready to tackle any road, any time.

The implementation of the TNGA platform allows RAV4 to adopt the charisma of a bolder and tougher SUV, but in a package that is lower and wider. The longer wheelbase and wider front and rear tracks provide a stable, confident driving platform. For off-road prowess, the shorter front and rear overhangs will aid in RAV4's ability to overcome rugged terrain.

The unibody chassis is 57 percent more rigid than the outgoing version. RAV4 incorporates an optimally tuned multi-link rear suspension, providing ideal damping for handling, minimum interior cabin noise, and the utmost ride comfort. Ground clearance has been increased by more than half an inch, yet RAV4 is able to achieve improved aerodynamics.

The relocated side mirrors are now positioned lower on the door for increased forward visibility around the A-pillar. Side visibility is increased thanks to a lowered beltline and the redesigned and enlarged rear-quarter glass assists with rear-diagonal visibility.

Unparalleled Driving Experience with More Power, MPG and Capabilities

Engineers worked for about four years to fine-tune every aspect of RAV4's performance, handling stability and ride comfort. The end goal was simple: engineer a driving experience that is Confident and Natural.

This unmatched performance was realized thanks to a group of takumi-highly-trained master craftsmen-who strived to develop a vehicle that acts and reacts as the driver intends, even in extreme weather and road conditions. Including the takumi in the development process was just another layer of enhancement to the overall design approach led by the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) philosophy. These master craftsmen focused on working together to improve vehicle performance at various stages of the development process to deliver an ever-better Toyota RAV4.

The power source for Toyota RAV4's driving abilities comes from one of two powertrains:

Dynamic Force 2.5-liter inline-four-cylinder engine with VVT-iE mated to an 8-speed Direct-Shift Automatic Transmission, which motivates the five gas models
Dynamic Force 2.5-liter inline-four-cylinder Toyota Hybrid System II (THS II) engine with Electronically-Controlled Continuously-Variable Transmission (ECVT), which activates the four hybrid models

The takumi were precise with the development of RAV4's structure and configuration to achieve an increase in performance as a whole. The engine utilizes high-speed combustion technology and a variable control system for greater thermal efficiency output, which reduces energy losses associated with exhaust and cooling systems and the movement of mechanical parts, among other factors. With a 40-percent thermal efficiency (41 percent for hybrids), the 2.5-liter 4-cylinder Dynamic Force Engine is the ideal powerplant for the all-new RAV4 to meet the demand of providing a highly responsive, yet fuel efficient driving experience. The Direct Shift-8AT transmission provides direct lock-up from gears two through eight to eliminate power loss from the torque converter, executing ideal smooth shifts.

Bold new (fifth-generation) Toyota RAV4 revealed!

The new RAV4 features an edgier design than before.

Toyota has whipped the covers off its new RAV4 ahead of the fifth-generation SUV’s official debut at the New York International Auto Show.

In a significant design departure from the outgoing model, the new RAV4 borrows styling elements from the daring FT-AC concept. Interestingly, some trim levels in the US market each appear to feature markedly different frontal designs.

Underpinned by the Japanese brand’s TNGA platform, the new RAV4 is both lower and wider, with a longer wheelbase and wider front and rear tracks. Overall length, though, has been cut slightly to 4 595 mm, while ground clearance has been hiked by around 13 mm. Toyota says the unibody chassis is 57 percent more rigid than the outgoing version.

In the United States, two powertrains will be offered: a 2,5-litre four-cylinder mated to an eight-speed automatic and a hybrid version of the same engine, but linked to an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission. Local engine derivatives, of course, have yet to be established.

The fifth-generation RAV4 also features something Toyota calls “Dynamic Torque Vectoring All-Wheel Drive with Rear Driveline Disconnect”, which is capable of sending 50 percent of engine torque to the rear wheels, plus distribute it to the left or right rear wheel for improved handling.

Toyota says rear passengers will enjoy more space, while the US-spec Entune 3.0 audio system includes a seven-inch touchscreen perched atop the centre stack. An eight-inch touchscreen will also offered.

2019 Toyota RAV4 unveiled with tough new look

More aggressively styled SUV comes with hybrid or petrol power

Toyota has revealed a new and much tougher-looking RAV4 that will face off the Ford Kuga and Nissan Qashqai next year.

On show in New York, the Toyota New Global Architecture platform-based SUV has been launched with one hybrid option and one petrol variant.

No diesel model will be produced, as per Toyota’s plans to phase out oil-burning models before the end of 2018.

The entry-level powerplant at launch is a 2.0-litre petrol. No specifications have been revealed as of yet, but it’s likely to build on the four-pot motor of the same capacity in the outgoing RAV4 that offers 149bhp and a claimed 43.5mpg. The new car features an updated all-wheel drive system that can disconnect the rear axle to improve fuel economy.

Next up is a 2.5-litre petrol engine that works with an electric motor. Like the 2.0-litre unit, no numbers for the hybrid option have been released, but it will better the 194bhp and 55.4mpg on offer in today’s version.

Toyota may choose to offer a second hybrid variant to fill the gap left by its discontinued diesel RAV4 at a later date. The recently revealed Auris comes with a choice of two hybrid powerplants, a 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre mated to electric motors, suggesting one of these could be added to the RAV4's line-up.

The 2019 RAV4’s more muscular new look is emphasised by squared-off wheel arches and shorter overhangs than the current car.

Inside, there’s a plusher cabin that gets a centrally mounted infotainment system above a cleanly designed console. Exact specifications will be revealed in the run-up to the new RAV4’s launch, but dual-zone climate control and leather seats were included in the (undoubtedly high-spec) New York show car.

Toyota says the car is 10mm wider to offer improved interior room and boot space.

The new RAV4 will arrive in Britain in the first quarter of 2019, when no diesel models will be sold by Toyota. The brand is making aggressive adjustments to its range to boost efficiency and respond more directly to demand. It recently revealed intentions to axe the Avensis from its UK line-up as part of this process.
