Sorry, S60 is more important than V60, you should have included S60 in the title as well
V60 was announced first but yes S60 is a more important vehicle to Volvo's bottom line.

I'll use this thread for S60 updates.

Volvo confirms ‘Polestar Engineered’ upgrade for new S60

Volvo Cars has announced that it has developed a new electrified performance package (dubbed “Polestar Engineered”) for the upcoming 60 Series T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid derivatives.

The announcement comes shortly before the Swedish automaker is expected to unveil its new S60 sedan, which will be built in Charleston, South Carolina. The Polestar Engineered package will debut on the T8 Twin Engine version of the upcoming S60 sedan, and will be positioned above the R Design derivatives.

In addition, Volvo confirmed that Polestar Engineered would be offered on the new V60 estate and XC60 SUV from 2019, and would be available “globally in limited numbers”.

Volvo says the package applies Polestar’s “performance engineering expertise” to the vehicle’s wheels, brakes, suspension and engine control unit. Tweaks to the latter will hike the peak outputs of the S60’s 2,0-litre electrified T8 Twin Engine to 309 kW and 670 N.m, with Volvo furthermore claiming an improvement in fuel consumption. On paper, that would see the Polestar-fettled S60 outpunch the likes of the Audi S4, BMW 340i and Mercedes-AMG C43.

The upgrade will include new lightweight alloys framing gold-painted brake callipers, with that hue set to become the new signature colour for Polestar Engineered components. Polestar emblems, black-chrome tailpipes and gold-coloured seat belts also serve to identify these flagship models.

Volvo says the Brembo mono-block brake callipers are cast in one piece and “optimised for rigidity”, the brake pads boast “increased heat tolerance” and the brake discs feature a slotted design.

Suspension tweaks include the addition of Öhlins shock absorbers with dual-flow valves, as well as the adoption of strut bar and adjustable shock absorber designs from the Polestar 1 plug-in hybrid performance car.

“Electric cars are our future,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and CEO of Volvo Cars. “Today starts a new era of Volvo electrified models enhanced by Polestar’s performance engineering prowess. This strategy is firmly grounded in our shared belief in an electric future for the car industry.”

Volvo details new ‘Polestar Engineered’ S60 T8

With Polestar having recently split off into a separate premium brand focusing on electrification, it might seem strange to see the badge return to a ‘conventional’ Volvo product.

But the new ‘Polestar Engineered’ offering that was specifically developed for its ‘60’ range appears to be a bridge between the two, in the same way that BMW’s M Performance cars like the M240i straddle the lines between normal BMW’s and devilish M Division cars.

The difference here is that Polestar is focused on ‘electrification’ and the first of the new-generation ‘Polestar Engineered’ products will be the T8 version of the third-generation S60 sedan that’s due to be revealed in a week from now. Similar versions of the V60 and XC60 will be offered in 2019.

Polestar has fine-tuned the engine control unit to raise the T8 plug-in hybrid drivetrain’s outputs from 298kW and 640Nm to 309kW and 670Nm.

The gearbox and brakes get some Polestar tinkering too, as does the multi-link front and rear suspension, which also gets Öhlins adjustable shock absorbers as well as a strut bar design inherited from the Polestar 1 high-performance coupé.

There won’t be too much on the outside to tell the Polestar Engineered models apart, besides Polestar emblems, black chrome exhaust pipes, and gold seatbelts and brake callipers - showing off the division’s new “hallmark” colour.

The Polestar Engineered variants will be available globally, says Volvo, but volumes will be limited.

Volvo revs up for S60 reveal with one last tease

Volvo has promised that these will be the last teaser images of the new S60 sedan before it’s revealed to the world at 5pm tomorrow in the company’s brand new Ridgeville plant, which is where the it will be assembled for the world market.

The shape under the sheet is clearly derived from the S90 - few of us will have a problem with that - and if build quality is up to that model’s standards the makers of the A4, 3 Series and C-Class may well be feeling a draught when the new Swedish compact premium sedan, built in the United States by a Chinese company, arrives in showrooms late this year or early in 2019.

What we know so far:

The S60 will share its engines with the latest XC60, with two important exceptions: the flagship T8 Twin hybrid (now ‘Polestar Engineered’) gets an extra 11kW and 30Nm for a combined total of 309kW and 670Nm. And, for the first time, there’s no diesel option, as Volvo begins to make good on its threat to phase out compression-ignition engines in search of a cleaner, more politically correct future.

Volvo opens first US factory ahead of S60 reveal

Upcoming S60 will be built at 1600-acre facility in Charleston, South Carolina

Volvo has officially opened its first factory in the US ahead of the launch of the new S60 sports saloon, which will be unveiled at the new plant in Charleston, South Carolina later today (Wednesday).

The £772 million, 2.3 million square foot facility will be the sole manufacturing site of the S60, which will go into production in the autumn. The plant will also be used to build the next-generation XC90, due in 2021.

The S60 (previewed in the below image) is built on the Scaleable Product Architecture (SPA) that Volvo shared with other Geely brands and is based on the already released V60 estate.

The factory is built on 1600 acres and will employ 1500 people by at the end of the year, eventually increasing to a total of 4000. The site has capacity to produce up to 150,000 cars annually.

Volvo also has factories in Sweden and Belgium, three factories and an engine plant in China and assembly plants in India and Malaysia. The firm believes its first US facility will help its bold expansion plans.

“The saloon segment and the SPA platform’s proven ability to boost profitability offer significant growth opportunities for Volvo Cars in the US and globally,” said company boss Håkan Samuelsson.

New Volvo S60 to be revealed today

Russian doll styling means the no-diesel Volvo S60 looks like a downsized S90; the V60 estate has already been shown

The Volvo S60, the brand's new sports saloon and rival to the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A4, will be revealed later today at its factory in South Carolina.

An image previously leaked onto a Swedish car site showed the car's rear, with similar design to the divisive S90 saloon.

Volvo has begun the reveal process for the S60 with several preview images revealing details of the car's design. A more revealing shot was released of the hot S60 T8 Twin Engine Polestar Engineered - a performance-oriented version of the BMW 3 Series rival, tweaked by now spun-off performance brand, Polestar.

That car, pictured below, will produce more than 409bhp and 494lb ft of torque from its 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine and plug-in hybrid system thanks to Polestar's tweaks, while braking, suspension and other modifications have been applied by Polestar.

Volvo's BMW 3 Series rival will be built at a new factory in South Carolina, brand boss Håkan Samuelsson revealed.

A shot from Volvo previewed the S60's front end, which remains unchanged from the recently revealed V60 estate. This is the first glimpse we've had at the compact executive saloon, however, ahead of its on-sale date after the V60, but before the end of the year.

The plant, a new facility in South Carolina, will begin construction of the S60 in late 2018, although the plant itself has been under development since January 2016. All S60s will be built at the plant, which has a maximum capacity of 100,000 cars per year. The next XC90 will also be built there.

Volvo S60

Volvo Cars, the premium car maker, revealed the new Volvo S60 mid-size premium sports sedan at the company's first US manufacturing plant in Charleston, South Carolina.

The new Charleston plant is officially inaugurated. The combined car launch and factory opening reinforce Volvo Cars' commitment to the US, an important market for the company and its new premium sports sedan. The new Volvo S60 is the first Volvo car made in the US.

"The new S60 is one of the most exciting Volvo cars we've ever made," said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars. "It is a true driver's car that gives us a strong position in the US and China sedan markets, creating more growth opportunities for Volvo Cars."

The new Volvo S60 is the first Volvo car to be sold without a diesel offer, signalling the company's industry-leading commitment to electrification and a long-term future beyond the traditional combustion engine. In 2017 Volvo Cars was the first global car maker to announce its strategy that from 2019 all new models will be electrified.

Two turbo-charged and super-charged plug-in hybrid petrol engines will be available in the new S60: Volvo's T6 Twin Engine AWD plug-in hybrid that generates a combined 340hp, and the award-winning T8 Twin Engine AWD plug-in hybrid that delivers 400hp. Volvo's proven T5 and T6 petrol engines will be available at launch.

In a first for the segment, customers can access the new S60 via Volvo Cars' new premium subscription service Care by Volvo, which offers car access with no down payment via a monthly flat-fee subscription rather than ownership. Care by Volvo makes having a car as transparent, easy and hassle free as having a phone.

"The active chassis and drive modes deliver excellent control and an engaged performance that makes this a driver's car," said Henrik Green, senior vice president for research and development at Volvo Cars. "It also brings the acclaimed technology from our 90 Series and other 60 Series cars into this segment, making it one of the best sports sedans on the market."

The new Volvo S60 shares Volvo Cars' own Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform, safety technology and infotainment system with the new V60 premium mid-size estate, launched earlier this year, as well as the top-of-the-line 90 Series cars and award-winning XC60, all of which have achieved industry-leading safety ratings. This makes the new S60 one of the safest cars on the road.

The City Safety with Autobrake technology assists the driver in avoiding potential collisions, and is the only system on the market to recognise pedestrians, cyclists and large animals. In a world first for the mid-size sedan segment, City Safety now also engages auto braking to mitigate oncoming collisions.

The optional Pilot Assist system - which supports the driver with steering, acceleration and braking on well-marked roads up to 130km/h - has been upgraded with improved cornering performance. The Volvo S60 also includes Run-off Road Mitigation, Oncoming Lane Mitigation and other steering assistance systems. The optional Cross Traffic Alert with autobrake further enhances safety for people inside and outside the car.

Volvo Cars' Sensus Connect infotainment system is fully compatible with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and 4G, and keeps drivers connected at all times. The intuitive control is a tablet-style touch screen interface that combines car functions, navigation, connected services and in-car entertainment apps.

Electrified versions of the new S60 also offer a performance handling upgrade called Polestar Engineered - developed by Volvo Cars' electric performance arm, Polestar.

Polestar Engineered is available exclusively on the T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid and is a complete offer that upgrades the car's wheels, brakes, suspension and engine control unit, boosting the Volvo S60 T8 combined output to 415hp.

It's a beauty but I feel that rear numberplate housing is off.

Additionally no diesel options at all for the new range.

Say hello to the new (third-generation) Volvo S60 sedan

Volvo Cars has taken the wraps off its new S60 sedan, revealing the third generation of its mid-size saloon – which will take on the likes of the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class – at its new US manufacturing plant in Charleston, South Carolina.

The new S60 sedan is built on the Swedish automaker’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform, underpinnings it shares with the likes of the latest V60, XC60, V90, S90 and XC90.

The brand says the new S60 is the first Volvo car to be sold without a diesel engine option, signalling the company’s commitment to electrification and a “long-term future beyond the traditional combustion engine”.

So, what will power the new S60? Well, the automaker says two turbocharged and supercharged plug-in hybrid petrol engines will be available: its T6 Twin Engine AWD plug-in hybrid that generates a combined 254 kW and the T8 Twin Engine AWD plug-in hybrid that delivers 298 kW (both is US spec, anyway).

Volvo’s familiar T5 and T6 petrol engines will also be offered. In addition, a “Polestar Engineered” package (as pictured below) will be available exclusively on the T8 Twin Engine model, bringing upgrades to the vehicle’s wheels, brakes, suspension and engine control unit.

Safety systems in the new S60 will include “city safety with autobrake” technology, the “pilot assist” system (which supports the driver with steering, acceleration and braking on well-marked roads up to 130km/h), run-off road mitigation, oncoming lane mitigation and other steering assistance systems.

Volvo’s Sensus Connect infotainment system (which includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto) will also be present, in the familiar tablet-style touchscreen form.

“The new S60 is one of the most exciting Volvo cars we’ve ever made,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars. “It is a true driver’s car that gives us a strong position in the US and China sedan markets, creating more growth opportunities for Volvo Cars.”

Henrik Green, senior vice president for research and development at Volvo Cars, added that “the active chassis and drive modes deliver excellent control and an engaged performance that makes this a driver’s car”.

Volvo unveils all-new, SA-bound S60

Volvo has revealed its third-generation of its 3-Series rivalling S60 sports sedan, which gets a crisp new design and all of the latest infotainment and save-your-bacon gizmos.

Like its already-revealed V60 sibling, the S60 shifts onto Volvo’s SPA platform that also underpins all the ‘90’ models, and incidentally it’ll also be the first Volvo product to be built in the USA, in a brand new plant in South Carolina.

The newcomer is set to be launched in South Africa during 2019, offering three 2-litre turbopetrol engine options - T4, T5 and T6, the latter also benefiting from supercharging.

Also under consideration for our market are the T6 and T8 ‘Twin Engine’ plug in hybrid models, which boast respective outputs of 250kW and 294kW. Those opting for the T8 will be able to order it with a Polestar Engineered package that includes tweaks to the ECU (which bumps power up to 305kW) as well as revised suspension, brakes and wheels.

Sadly for diesel fans, the new S60 will be the first modern Volvo not to be offered with a diesel engine, with other new Volvos set to follow suit as the Swedish brand slowly phases out its compression ignition engines.

As you’d expect, the new sedan is bursting with advanced safety features, including an updated City Safety system which can now also use its auto-braking tech to mitigate oncoming collisions.

The Pilot Assist semi-autonomous system that comes as standard on ‘90’ models will be an option on the S60, and this gizmo has also been updated, with improved steering assistance.

The command centre is Volvo’s familiar tablet-like Sensus Connect infotainment system.

Depending on the market, customers will be able to get an S60 on ‘subscription’, much like with a smartphone, through the new Care by Volvo premium service.

South African pricing, specifications and final launch timing will be confirmed at a later stage.
