2020 Audi RS7 Sportback (2nd Gen)

New Audi RS7 receives redesign and 591bhp V8

Audi Sport's refreshed grand tourer features R8-inspired styling elements and is capable of 189mph

Audi Sport has unveiled the 591bhp second-generation RS7 Sportback, with a series of upgrades designed to make it a true ‘Gran Turismo’ atop the ever-expanding RS range.

The new machine, revealed at the Frankfurt motor show ahead of going on sale early in 2020, is based on the A7 Sportback, and serves as a sister model to the recently revealed RS6 Avant. It uses the same powertrain as that model, with a 4.0-litre turbocharged V8 fitted with a 48V mild hybrid unit to produce 591bhp and 590lb ft. That results in a 0-62mph time of 3.6 seconds, with a limited top speed of 155mph, or 189mph with the optional Dynamic Plus pack.

The RS7 has been given a major makeover from the A7, with the the bonnet, front doors and boot lid the only body panels remaining unchanged. At 1951mm wide, it is 40mm than the A7. Exterior designer Francesco D’Amore told Autocar that the extra width “allowed us to show the prestige in the car.”

It features a redesigned gloss black Audi Sport single frame honeycomb grille at the front, along with enlarged air vents inspired by those on the R8 supercar - both to make the styling more aggressive and because the engine requires extra cooling.

Audi RS7 Sportback

The new Audi RS7 Sportback marks the model's second generation and is more unique than ever before. At the 2019 International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, Audi Sport GmbH presented the RS7 Sportback as a wide-bodied five-seater for the first time, also showcasing the improved performance and efficiency delivered by a mild hybrid system. The Audi RS7 Sportback will be arriving at dealerships in Germany and other European countries in the end of 2019.

"The RS7 Sportback is our interpretation of a five-door high-performance coupé with a grand tourer design," said Oliver Hoffmann, Managing Director of Audi Sport GmbH. "With refinements to make it even more suitable for everyday use plus its incredible performance, what we have here is an outstanding piece of sports equipment for customers who like their cars to feature stunning design."

V8 power: the drive system

The 4.0 TFSI in the new Audi RS7 Sportback produces 441 kW (600 metric hp) and delivers 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque within a broad range from 2,050 to 4,500 rpm. The high-performance Sportback will sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62.1 mph) in only 3.6 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155.3 mph); this can be increased to 280 km/h (174 mph) with the Dynamic package and to 305 km/h (189.5 mph) with the Dynamic plus package.

New Audi RS7 Sportback unveiled with 441 kW of V8 goodness!

The new Audi RS7 Sportback has been revealed at the Frankfurt motor show, powered by a 4,0 TFSI V8 generating 441 kW and 800 N.m.

Billed as a “wide-bodied five-seater”, the new RS7 Sportback furthermore benefits from a mild-hybrid system featuring a 48 V main on-board electrical system. The mild-hybrid’s belt alternator starter can recover up to 12 kW under “gentle acceleration” and feed it into a lithium-ion battery.

The turbocharged V8’s impressive peak torque figure is available from 2 050 to 4 500 r/min, and helps facilitate a sprint from zero to 100 km/h in a claimed 3,6 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h, although this number can be hiked to 280 km/h with the Dynamic package specified and to 305 km/h when ticking the “Dynamic plus package” box.

The 4,0-litre unit – which furthermore employs cylinder-on-demand technology – produces what the Ingoldstadt-based firm describes as a “full-bodied and sporty V8 sound”. There’s also an optional RS sport exhaust system with black tailpipe trim that provides an “even fuller sound”.

Hot Audi RS7 Sportback Shown

You are looking at the most powerful RS7 Sportback ever…

The new Audi RS7 Sportback made an appearance at the Frankfurt Motor Show this week and it undoubtedly exudes performance intent.

The aggressive lines on the bodywork, the large grille, gaping air intakes, large 21-inch wheels and oversize exhaust pipes all contribute to the new RS7 Sportback’s appeal.

To match that angry look is a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine featuring a 48-volt mild-hybrid electrical system that produces total outputs of 44 1 kW and 800 Nm of torque. These hefty numbers are directed to all four wheels using an 8-speed automatic transmission and the RS7 Sportback will sprint from zero to 100 kph in 3.6 seconds with top speed capped at 250 kph. Dynamic and Dynamic Plus packages, however, will push the top speed up to 280 kph and 305 kph respectively.

Audi unleashes new RS7 Sportback with 441kW

Hot on the heels of the new RS6 Avant that was revealed late last month, Audi is showing us the all-new RS7 Sportback which takes exactly the same high performance mild hybrid format and drops it into a less practical but more striking body.

Just like the RS6, the new RS7 is powered by a revised twin-turbo V8 powertrain that puts out 441kW and 800Nm, the latter available between 2050 and 4500rpm. It also matches its wagon siblings zero to 100km/h sprint time of 3.6 seconds, while the top speed is limited to 250km/h.

Ensuring the beastly soundtrack to match, engine acoustics are regulated by a flap system, linked to Audi Drive Select.

The RS7 is fitted with a 48-volt main electrical system and features a mild hybrid set-up with a belt alternator. The system can recover up to 12kW of power during light deceleration, which is then stored in a separate lithium ion battery. Ultimately, the set-up is said to save up to 0.8 litres per 100km in everyday driving. Cylinder deactivation also reduces consumption.

Audi RS7 Sportback 2019 review

Should I buy one?

The RS7 is easy to drive very quickly and would be well capable of slipping into your daily motoring life with remarkable suaveness. It’s not a fast grand tourer to make your hair stand on end on those special roads and drives; it’s one to live a little less long in the memory at its height, perhaps, but also to enjoy in a more broadly based way on every day of the year, come rain or shine. It’s the big fast Audi very much as we know it, then, but refined and updated, and still convincing enough it its own particular, understated way.

If you prefer the more esoteric, leftfield appeal of the closely related RS6 Avant, you won’t be alone. But if you don’t need quite as much lugging room as that hot estate provides, and you’d prefer the more exotic silhouette of a four-door grand tourer on your driveway, you’ll like a lot else about this car besides.

For us, it would just about beat its opposite numbers from BMW M and Mercedes-AMG for visual allure and ownership appeal, albeit not quite for driver appeal. But a lot of people, on a lot of journeys undertaken on any given day of the year, would probably be willing to forgive it that last fact.
