New BMW X1 receives makeover and hybrid option for 2019

Munich's best selling compact SUV is now capable of 31 electric-only miles in PHEV guise

BMW’s most popular global SUV, the X1, has been given a mid-life makeover, bringing tweaked looks and – for the first time outside of China – a plug-in hybrid version.

Given that BMW shifted nearly 287,000 examples of the X1 last year, leading the segment, it’s no surprise that visual updates aren’t the most extensive.

The kidney grille is now larger, in line with its newer siblings, while reshaped lights and bumpers front and rear aim to freshen the X1’s look. Larger diameter exhaust tailpipes, growing from 70mm to 90mm, complete the redesign.

The M Sport variants also has more styling changes to differentiate it more than before, including a 10mm drop in ride height, larger air intakes and body-coloured styling additions.

Interior revisions are limited to new materials and upholstery targeted at boosting perceived quality. New contrast stitching is available for the higher-end trim variants, while three new upholstery options feature.

An optional lighting package brings gives the cabin an ambient glow with six colour choices. The 6.5in, 8.8in and 10.25in (depending on spec) infotainment screens are unchanged.

The big story under the bonnet is the introduction of the xDrive25e plug-in variant. On sale in March 2020 (a few months after standard models), it uses a 123bhp, 162lb ft three-cylinder petrol engine mated to a 94bhp, 112lb ft electric motor powering the rear wheels for four-wheel drive.

A 9.7kWh battery pack gives a claimed 31-mile electric-only range. Fuel economy and emissions data is yet to be confirmed.

BMW X1

Bold, sporty, visually striking, the new model update for the BMW X1 adds another chapter to the Sports Activity Vehicle's ongoing success story. Since it was launched in late 2015, the current-generation BMW X1 has shown it has what it takes to be a winner. In 2018 it was not only the highest-selling BMW X model worldwide, it also led the way in its segment as a whole over the same time period with 286,827 units delivered to customers. Around 40% of all BMW X1 cars were sold to owners in Europe, while one in ten left the production line bound for the USA, which duly became its third-largest sales market.

The reasons for the sustained success of the BMW X1 are many and varied. On the one hand, it displays exactly those attributes which mark out its target customers: it is young, sporty and active. But it also out-performs arguably every other car in its segment in combining the driving pleasure for which BMW is renowned with versatility, functional appeal and cutting-edge technology. And last but not least, ever since it arrived on the scene the BMW X1 has made a compelling case for itself with its unmistakable design.

That design has been buffed and polished once again as part of the model update and now cuts a significantly more striking, sportier and more powerful figure. Armed with sporty yet efficient three- and four-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo engines, standout driving characteristics, BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive, extensive infotainment options and an updated range of BMW ConnectedDrive Services, the new BMW X1 is all set to build still further on its leading position in the market over the years ahead.

At the same time, though, the BMW X1 also has its sights fixed firmly on subsequent stages in its development. Indeed, next year the extremely efficient petrol and diesel models in the X1 line-up will be joined for the first time by the plug-in hybrid BMW X1 xDrive25e.

Between the X1, X2 and 1 series, you have to look twice to tell them apart.
Besides filling up the alpha numerical digits, I just don't see the need for a X1 and X2. Just one of those will do

The interior has not been updated with the new BMW DNA.
The new dash layout.
It still looks old and boring

Correct it's just an LCI. Core dash design is the same "old" design only now has the option of the 10.25" iDrive screen that can be specified.

I'm thinking of starting a thread about BMW's latest dash design (new 3er, new 8er, new Z4, new X5, new 1er) where a meaningful discussion can be had.

Lest I be accused by a certain SJW again of only "stick & paste".

Facelifted BMW X1 revealed (yes, sporting a larger grille)

BMW has lifted the covers off its facelifted X1, handing the entry point to its crossover range fresh styling, including a larger kidney grille.

The updated X1 comes after the reveal of the new 1 Series hatchback.

Up front, the most obvious change to the X1 is the adoption of a larger grille – with the “kidneys” merging in the centre – while new adaptive LED headlamps and a bumper with integrated LED foglamps and larger air intakes have also been added.

Round back, there a new inlay in the body-colour rear apron, while the driver-side side mirror now projects a two-tone “X1” LED image when the vehicle is unlocked.

Furthermore, three new exterior colours – Jucaro Beige metallic, Misano Blue metallic (exclusively for the M Sport model) and BMW Individual Storm Bay metallic – have been added to the range, along with four fresh alloy wheel designs.

The Munich-based firm says each of the model variants – base, xLine, Sport Line and M Sport – has been given a “standalone visual presence tailored precisely to its character profile”. The X1 M Sport, for instance, gains lowered suspension, an aerodynamics package and the BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line pack.

Updated BMW X1 Revealed

BMW has given its X1 crossover a makeover. Take a look at what’s changed…

The second-generation X1 came to market in 2015 and now the smallest X offering from BMW has gone under the knife for a refresh.

In case you haven’t noticed, BMW kidney grilles have been getting larger lately and the X1 now follows the trend with a bigger grille which is also flanked by newly designed headlights. Larger air intakes and integral LED foglights are also seen in the new front bumper.

BMW has also thrown in a party trick in the form of an X1 projection that shines onto the floor from the driver’s side mirror while also illuminating the door handle recess to provide easier access in the dark.

The rear of the X1 now benefits from redesigned LED tail lights as well as larger-diameter exhaust tips (from 70 mm to 90 mm). There are also new wheel designs on offer as well as some new colours to choose from including Jucaro Beige metallic, Misano Blue metallic and BMW Individual Storm Bay metallic.

BMW says it won’t build an X1 M35i flagship ... just yet, anyway

A BMW executive has confirmed the Munich-based automaker won’t build an M35i version of the current X1, although adds the next-generation model will indeed get an M Performance variant.

Of course, the X1 has only just been facelifted, with the updated model scheduled to arrive in South Africa in September 2019.

Speaking to CarAdvice, Brendan Michel, BMW Australia’s product and market planning chief, said there were no plans to drop the 225 kW/450 N.m 2,0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine used by the X2 M35i and M135i into the recently refreshed X1.

"We won't see M Performance in X1 until the next generation," Michel told the publication.

What, wait? BMW is reportedly planning a sub-X1 baby SUV

A fresh report out of the United Kingdom suggests BMW is planning to launch a new baby SUV positioned below the X1 and X2.

According to Auto Express (which also published speculative renderings), the newcomer will measure between 4 100 and 4 200 mm in length, which would see it taking on the likes of Audi's Q2.

The British publication claims the new baby SUV is likely to be badged the "BMW Urban X", breaking from the German manufacturer's SUV naming convention.

For the record, the X2 is currently the Munich-based firm’s most compact SUV at 4 360 mm long, while the X1 measures 4 439 mm nose to tail.
