BMW X1 SUV gains new plug-in hybrid variant

Compact crossover line-up expanded with PHEV that promises 35 miles of all-electric range and up to 141mpg

BMW has extended its second-generation X1 line-up with the addition of a new plug-in hybrid xDrive25e model.

Set for UK sale later this year, the five-seat SUV receives an updated version of the petrol-electric hybrid driveline used by the 225xe Active Tourer with a claimed electric range of up to 35.4 miles on the WLTP test cycle.

Power is provided by a turbocharged 1.5-litre three cylinder petrol engine with 123bhp and 169lb ft of torque, combined with an electric motor mounted within the rear axle assembly with 94bhp and 122lb ft. Together, the two power sources deliver a combined system output of 217bhp and 284lb ft.

Facelifted BMW X1 in South Africa: check out local pricing here

We have come across local pricing for the facelifted BMW X1 ahead of its launch in South Africa, with the updated range comprising five derivatives.

Unlike the pre-facelifted line-up, all SA-spec variants will ship standard with automatic transmissions (farewell, manual gearbox).

The majority of the engine choices, however, are carried over, with the range again kicking off with the X1 sDrive18i. This model’s turbocharged 1,5-litre three-cylinder petrol unit offers an unchanged 103 kW and 220 N.m to the front axle via a seven-speed self-shifter, and will be priced from R561 277.

The X1 sDrive18d, meanwhile, is new to the local range, employing a 2,0-litre turbodiesel powerplant delivering 110 kW and 330 N.m to the front wheels through an eight-speed automatic. This variant will be priced from R590 771.

And the sDrive20i? Well, this model will start at R602 669, with its turbocharged 2,0-litre petrol unit again generating 141 kW and 280 N.m, offered to the front rubber via a seven-speed gearbox.

Finally, the 20d flagship will be available in both sDrive and xDrive guises, with the front-driven model priced from R630 139 and the all-wheel-drive derivative coming at from R660 392. Both feature a 2,0-litre turbodiesel powerplant worth 140 kW and 400 N.m (linked to an eight-speed automatic cog-swapper as standard).

BMW X1 xDrive25d 2019 review

Should I buy one?

The xDrive25d is a quality product with good everyday versatility, no doubt. It also possesses a good turn of speed, thanks to the urgent qualities of its engine, and is quite engaging to drive on the right roads.

However, it trades off too much in the way of compliance to make it truly enjoyable. We suspect the cheaper and less powerful xDrive20d is a more rounded proposition.

BMW X1 xDrive25e: prices revealed for plug-in hybrid SUV

PHEV powertrain promises 35 miles of electric-only range and up to 141mpg; is also coming to the X2

BMW has confirmed prices for the new plug-in hybrid xDrive25e version of its second-generation X1 - and confirmed that the same powertrain will appear in the X2 later this year.

Available to order now from £38,200 and with deliveries beginning in March, the five-seat SUV will be capable of up to 35 miles of electric range on the WLTP test cycle. It uses an updated version of the petrol-electric hybrid driveline used in the 225xe Active Tourer.

The X1 xDrive25e will be available in Sport Line, xLine and M Sport trim levels in the UK. Standard equipment includes 17in alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, LED headlights and sports seats.

A turbocharged 1.5-litre three cylinder petrol engine, making 123bhp and 169lb ft of torque, combines with an electric motor, making 94bhp and 122lb ft, mounted in the rear axle assembly. These deliver a total output of 217bhp and 284lb ft.

The transversly mounted engine sends its reserves exclusively to the front wheels via a six-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox, while the electic motor powers the rear wheels. This setup that provides the X1 xDrive25e with front, rear and four-wheel drive capability, depending on the driving mode.

New BMW X1 hits the road in disguise ahead of 2022 launch

Next-generation small SUV is seen testing ahead of expected debut in 2022; will spawn electric 'iX1'

BMW has begun road testing its third-generation X1 ahead of an expected debut in the first half of 2022.

The small SUV, which is technically closely linked to the latest 1 Series hatchback, was seen with the disguise typical of a model that’s not all that far from an unveiling.

However, given that the current X1 has only just been facelifted, having first gone on sale in 2015, we don’t expect to see the new car becoming official during next year.

Visually, it appears the next X1 will feature a design evolved from that of the newer, bolder X2, as well as the new 1 Series. What appear to be enlarged kidney grilles fit into this, while the overall shape is more angular and distinctive. It also seems to be slightly larger, with more of an upright roofline to help differentiate the X1 from the X2.

Nearly new buying guide: BMW X1

The second-generation X1 is a refined and reliable choice. We investigate

Don’t confuse this second-generation BMW X1 with the rather lame first-generation model. The original sold well and introduced buyers to the concept of a mid-size BMW SUV, but it wasn’t very good.

This all-new 2015 model was quite different and much better. Unusually for a BMW it was front-wheel drive, but it had new engines, a new chassis and new technology inside.

Engine choices consisted of a range of turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder units. Diesels included the 148bhp sDrive (front-wheel drive) and xDrive18d (four-wheel drive), the 187bhp xDrive20d and the 228bhp xDrive25d. Those who prefer petrol could opt for a 138bhp sDrive18i or a 189bhp sDrive20i or xDrive20i.

More expensive variants got an eight-speed automatic transmission and a choice of either front-wheel drive or part-time four-wheel drive, with torque sent to the rear wheels via an electrohydraulic clutch on the rear axle. The 217bhp plug-in hybrid xDrive25e arrived this year with an all-electric range of 35 miles, with BMW taking the opportunity to facelift the X1 and add a range of updates.

Across the line-up, entry-level SE trim has iDrive and a 6.5in multimedia system with sat-nav, DAB, a CD player, USB connectivity and Bluetooth streaming. Auto wipers and lights, 17in alloys, an automatic tailgate and rear parking sensors are also standard on SE.

New BMW iX1 electric crossover prepares for launch by 2023

Electric version of next X1 will replace i3 as the entry point into BMW's expanding EV line-up

BMW will launch an electric version of the next X1 crossover to rival the Volkswagen ID 4, and our photographers have caught it testing for the first time.

Likely to adopt the iX1 moniker in line with BMW's EV naming strategy, it will be sold alongside petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid versions of the third-generation X1 – which is due to launch next year – but will likely appear later than the ICE variants.

Along with the i7 and i5 saloons, the iX1 will arrive as one of nine new electric BMW models by 2025. Under the Power of Choice banner, the firm has committed to selling more than seven million PHEVs and EVs by the end of 2030.

The iX1 will serve as the entry point into the brand's expanding electric SUV range, sitting underneath the new iX3 and the flagship iX. It will also indirectly replace the i3 supermini, which has been on sale since 2013.
