New BMW iX1 electric crossover prepares for launch by 2023

Electric version of next X1 will replace i3 as the entry point into BMW's expanding EV line-up

BMW will launch an electric version of the next X1 crossover to rival the Volkswagen ID 4, and our photographers have caught it testing for the first time.

Likely to adopt the iX1 moniker in line with BMW's EV naming strategy, it will be sold alongside petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid versions of the third-generation X1 – which is due to launch next year – but will likely appear later than the ICE variants.

Along with the i7 and i5 saloons, the iX1 will arrive as one of nine new electric BMW models by 2025. Under the Power of Choice banner, the firm has committed to selling more than seven million PHEVs and EVs by the end of 2030.

The iX1 will serve as the entry point into the brand's expanding electric SUV range, sitting underneath the new iX3 and the flagship iX. It will also indirectly replace the i3 supermini, which has been on sale since 2013.

New BMW X1 shows off final look ahead of 2022 launch

Next-generation small SUV is seen testing ahead of expected debut in 2022; will spawn electric 'iX1'

BMW is road testing its third-generation X1 ahead of an expected debut in the first half of 2022.

The small SUV, which is technically closely linked to the latest 1 Series hatchback, was seen with the disguise typical of a model that’s not all that far from an unveiling.

However, given that the current X1 has only just been facelifted, having first gone on sale in 2015, we don’t expect to see the new car becoming official during next year.

Visually, it appears the next X1 will feature a design evolved from that of the newer, bolder X2, as well as the new 1 Series. What appear to be enlarged kidney grilles fit into this, while the overall shape is more angular and distinctive. It also seems to be slightly larger, with more of an upright roofline to help differentiate the X1 from the X2.

Inside, we will see the latest generation of intotainment, comfort and safety technology to bring the Audi Q3 rival in line with newer challengers and the rest of BMW's range. But more interesting are the powertrain choices set to be on offer.

Autocar understands the new X1 will make use of a heavily reworked version of the current model’s UKL platform. Although details of that aren't yet official, the Munich brand confirmed last month that an electric version of the next X1 (likely dubbed iX1 in line with the sub-brand naming strategy) will arrive by 2023. This will sit alongside existing petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid variants expected to arrive a year prior.

Is A BMW X1 M On The Way?

The all-new BMW X1 is on the way as the current model is at the end of its life cycle but could the new generation bring something rather interesting to the table?

As seen in the shot above, it seems they have decided to let the M Division create a variant of the X1 which will likely be called the X1 M.

The giveaway is the quad exhaust layout. Every M car for as long as we can remember has had quad exhaust pipes. No other ‘norma’ BMW uses such an exhaust layout, leaving it exclusive to the M Division.

It should not be that surprising to be fair as the rest of the market already offer performance variants of the BMW X1 rivals. The Mercedes-Benz GLA has the AMG GLA 45 variant while the Aud Q3 has the new RS Q3.

Spy Shots: 2023 BMW X1 M35i

BMW has begun work on a performance derivative of the X1 compact SUV. Here’s what we know so far about the 2023 X1 M35i.

What you see here is the 2023 BMW X1 M35i, the high-performance version of the next-generation of X1 compact SUV. While it’s not going to be touted as a pure M car, BMW has seen considerable success with its M-lite models and it’s easy to see why.

The price positioning of these performance models has meant the barrier to entry has been lowered and petrolheads can afford these offerings, while out-and-out pure M models remain at the top of the pile.

Interestingly, this 2022 BMW X1 M35i features quad exhausts, which is usually one of the key indicators of a full M model, but our photographers say that all M-Performance derivatives will be getting this setup going forward.

Of course, to be classed as an M-Performance model it will need the powertrain to match. BMW has quite an array of engines at its disposal and the current 2.0 M35i engines deliver 180 kW and 225 kW depending on the model.
