2019 Mercedes-AMG A45: video shows 400bhp hatch on track

Mercedes' forthcoming second-generation A45 hot hatch is due to get 200bhp per litre from its four-cylinder engine

Despite rumours to the contrary, the model will be pure petrol and will not require a hybrid set-up to produce its headline-grabbing numbers. "It's going to be the next step in every perspective, including driving dynamics," said Moers.

The A45's big power advantage will be illustrated with only small aesthetic differences. It will have a quad oval-exit exhaust system, whereas the A35 will get a dual-exit system.

Also featured on the A45 is AMG' Panamericana front grille, giving the 2019 car a design nod to the recently revealed GT 4-door Coupé.

The A45 will have its own unique chassis developments with optional adjustable damping offering an extreme mode for high-speed circuit running.

The current A45 is renowned for its stiff adjustable set-up, but the recently sighted test cars for the next-gen model look to be sitting lower, suggesting AMG could be targeting even more body composure for track-day driving in its future model.

The new A-Class is 10mm longer than today’s car and adopts a new floorpan and body structure that are claimed to provide significant increases in rigidity. This provides it with improved refinement.

The new A45 will also get a significantly wider front track and receive its own unique wheel carriers in a bid to reduce unsprung mass. It will roll on standard 18in wheels, but 19in rims will be an option.

The 376bhp original A45 is capable of 0-62mph in 4.2sec, but AMG is planning to ramp up straight-line performance further still. The basis for the changes to the M133 unit comes from Mercedes’ new M260 four-cylinder engine. This is derived from the older M270 motor used by today’s A-Class but has a new crankcase and cylinder head.

Initially, the reworked M133 will feature a traditional exhaust gas-driven twin-scroll turbocharger. However, AMG is also developing a more advanced variant of its new engine that uses a 48V electrical system and runs both an electric-driven turbocharger and electric motor in a hybrid set-up that promises an even greater ramp-up in performance.

AMG is also looking to endow its new hatchback model with an extra 20lb ft — a move that, insiders have told Autocar, will provide it with at least 369lb ft and allow its 0-62mph sprint to crack the 4.0sec mark.

The changes to the A45’s driveline extend to its gearbox and multi-plate-clutch four-wheel-drive system. Both have been extensively redesigned to handle the higher torque loadings of the new model.

In line with developments further down the new A-Class line-up, AMG’s new flagship hatchback model is set to adopt a new nine-speed dual-clutch transmission, together with a faster-reacting four-wheel-drive system that offers greater variability in the drive split between the front and rear wheels, plus a torque vectoring function for added on-the-limit handling delicacy.

The new A-Class, which is codenamed W177, will have the most comprehensive AMG range thanks to the introduction of the Golf R and Ford Focus RS-rivalling A35, which was revealed at Paris motor show. That car faces BMW's next 1 Series hot hatch, which is set to adopt all-wheel drive and be called the M130iX.

“We’ve identified a market for a milder AMG model positioned below the A45 4Matic,” AMG boss Tobias Moers told Autocar. “The strategy is going to be similar to that seen further up the line-up, where our various 43 models support the 63 models.”

The new A45 builds on the developments of the new fourth-generation A-Class. The model is the first of up to eight new compact cars, which include replacements for today’s B-Class, CLA and CLA Shooting Brake, as well as the GLA. There will also be an A-Class Saloon (and its own 400bhp A45 variant), a GLB and a possible new seven-seat version of the GLB.

Watch The New Mercedes-AMG A45 Drifting Like Crazy

Christmas is around the corner which means manufacturers loading us with content for the occasion and it seems the crazy folk at Mercedes-AMG are using it to tease the unreleased A45 and it’s serious drifting capabilities.

Billed as “not another Christmas video,” the holiday themed clip begins with traditional Christmas music but quickly transitions into something else entirely as it shows the high-performance hatchback hitting the track.

Dressed in colorful camouflage, the Mercedes-AMG A45 follows in the footsteps of A35 but features a more aggressive exterior with a panamericana grille and a four-tailpipe exhaust system. The model also appears to have unique alloy wheels and the same rear wing as the A35.

Although the teaser video does not show too much regarding the final design, you get your first look at just how happy it is to go drifting which confirms it will come with a ‘drift mode’ of sorts.

2019 Mercedes-AMG A45: power output revealed for super hatch

Mercedes' upcoming Audi RS 3 rival will get up to 416bhp, according to powertrain specs 'leaked' on German insurance website

The power output of Mercedes-AMG upcoming A45 appears to have been revealed accidentally by a German insurance website.

HUK24, an online insurance provider, has stored powertrain specs in a drop-down list for the new range-topping A-Class, examples of which were registered for road use in Germany in December.

The details, although unconfirmed officially, reveal that there will be two different power outputs from the car's 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine. The 'base' model will produce 387PS (382bhp), while the flagship S variant makes 421PS (415bhp). Both will put their power down through all four-wheels, and are set to go on sale later this year.

The output of the standard model is already in excess of the 370bhp produced by the outgoing A45, with the top-spec car a full 45bhp more powerful. That should translate to 0-62mph of around four-seconds, and possibly less.

The video, which the German firm has called 'Not another Christmas video', showed an A45 in a bold multi-coloured disguise livery lapping a test track in Germany, and showed the car performing a series of powerslides.

While few official details of the range-topping A-Class have been revealed, Autocar has previously learned that it is set to have the highest specific output for a production engine in the world, eclipsing even the McLaren Senna's 789bhp V8.

AMG boss Tobias Moers told Autocar earlier this year that the A45 will get "well over 400bhp" from its new engine, which is expected to be an extensively re-engineered version of the current car's 2.0-litre unit.

That means it will have more than 200bhp per litre, ranking the car at least 12bhp-per-litre higher than the current A45 and beating the current specific output champion, the 197bhp-per-litre Senna.

The model, dubbed by AMG insiders as 'The Predator' as a nod to its extreme performance, is expected to serve a rival to Audi Sport's RS3 in the pairing's ongoing super-hatch fight, while also ensuring the A45 offers stronger straight-line performance than the forthcoming BMW M2 CSL.

Mercedes-AMG to launch A45 and A45 S: Updated

The forthcoming Mercedes-AMG A45 is near production ready and while we don't have exact details yet, we do know that it'll be available in two states of tune; A45 and A45 S. Here's what we know so far.

The Mercedes-AMG A45 really upset the hot hatchback market when it made its arrival back in 2013. Boasting 265 kW and 450 Nm, mated to an all-wheel-drive system, it was devastatingly quick off the line. A facelift version arrived with even more power (280 kW and 475 Nm) which was even more ballistic in a drag race.

With the introduction of W177 aka the 4th generation of A-Class, there was no doubt that there would be a successor. Now officially Mercedes-AMG has not yet revealed this model, instead introducing the A35, which bridges the gap between A250 and the new hardcore road-legal weapon. It pushes out 225 kW and 400 Nm, and with a 0-100 kph claimed sprint of time of 4.7 seconds, it's squarely in the crosshairs of the Audi S3 and Volkswagen Golf R.

Another thing we have learned is that the new Mercedes-AMG A45 will follow its bigger siblings naming convention and being available in two distinct flavours, namely A45 and A45 S. We've been led to believe that the South African market will only be receiving the full-fat A45 S model in 2019, with a hopeful arrival in the 2nd quarter, not that long after its A35 warm-up act.

Update: Thanks to a leak on a German insurance website, we can now confirm the power outputs of the next-generation A45 and A45 S. The A45 will have 285 kW, while its more potent sibling breaches the 300 kW barrier with 310 kW! We have also learnt that the A45 will feature Drift Mode, as the below video highlights.

First ride: 2019 Mercedes-AMG A45 S prototype

Most potent A-Class ever proves a capable drifter in an icy first passenger ride ahead of an official launch later this year

It’s covered in kaleidoscopic plastic wrap camouflage. Inside, it glistens with high definition graphics. A good five months from its planned UK introduction, it is still very much a prototype with cabling and other paraphernalia used to attach data logging and testing equipment scattered throughout its cabin. Whenever I get up close to it I’m joined by a German engineer who convinces me I shouldn’t poke around for too long.

Because it is all a big secret. The only information AMG is prepared to divulge about its second-generation A45 4Matic ahead of its highly anticipated unveiling is that it will drift. Forget that there isn’t an official power figure or any other information about Affalterbach’s new four-wheel drive hyperhatch yet. What Mercedes-Benz’sperformance car division wants to you know is that, with its three-stage ESP disengaged and the push of a driving mode button as well as some steering wheel paddle protocol used to engage its advanced rear differential, its rear-end will go sideways just like that of the rear-wheel drive BMW M2 Competition.

This, I can confirm, because I’ve ridden in the new 2019 model year A45 4Matic. And, yes, it does attain seemingly impossible slip angles with all the rabid throttle induced cornering ambition of a high powered rear-wheel drive supercar when the driver wants it to . . . on ice. In fact, much of my time in AMG’s latest model was spent peering out the passenger side window as Reinhold Renger, the head instructor at the company’s so-called driving academy, worked his magic behind the steering wheel, displaying the effect of that rather special new differential around a giant test track etched into a frozen lake in the north of Sweden in the middle of winter.

Next-gen Mercedes-AMG A45’s two outputs revealed

Yes, it looks like the rumours were true. The next-generation Mercedes-AMG A45 will be offered in two forms: a so-called “standard” model (although we suspect that’s not an entirely appropriate word) and an S-badged version with an even higher output.

These, of course, will slot in at the very summit of the A-Class range, above the 225 kW Mercedes-AMG A35 revealed at the Paris Motor Show late in 2018.

According to Autocar (which recently enjoyed a ride-along in a prototype), the upcoming second-generation hyper-hatch’s turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder engine will be available in two states of tune. The A45 will deliver 285 kW (up on the outgoing model’s 280 kW) while the A45 S will offer a whopping 310 kW.

Both versions will reportedly employ a new, sophisticated version of the Stuttgart-based brand’s 4Matic all-wheel-drive system (complete with a dedicated drift mode), along with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Expect an official reveal in the coming weeks…

Crazy power from a "stock 2litre" always been a fan of the A45, its very flawed, but just a little crazy.
In the real world, i can see myself owning an A35 though

Mercedes-AMG previews new A45 and CLA 35

Mercedes AMG is continuing its compact car onslaught with an all-new A45 hatch as well as a CLA version of the new entry ‘35’ model that’s already been revealed in hatch form.

The performance division recently released ‘teaser’ material of both, meaning that full reveals can’t be far off.

In a recent social media post, a pair of 2019 A45 AMG prototypes can be seen drifting on icy terrain in Sweden. Although the hyper hatch is heavily disguised, it does appear to have a Panamericana grille, which will be one of the things that distinguishes it visually from its A35 sibling.

The biggest difference, of course, will be what’s beneath the bonnet - namely a far more powerful 2-litre turbocharged engine, and we already know how much power it makes, thanks to a German insurance company that leaked the outputs online earlier this year.

The HUK24 quote finder listed a standard A45 AMG model with 285kW and a more potent A45 S version with a mammoth 310kW. The previous A45 produced 280kW, and its nearest rival, the Audi RS3, is good for 294kW so the upcoming A45 AMG will be taking back the hyper hatch crown by quite a margin.

New Mercedes-AMG A45 Will Have Most Powerful Production Four-Cylinder Ever With 420 HP (313 KW)

Recently at the 2019 New York Auto Show, Tobias Moers, head of AMG confirmed that the new Mercedes-AMG A45 will have 420 hp (313 kW) making it the most powerful production-car four-cylinder ever.

This also means it has one of the highest specific outputs we’ve ever seen at 210 hp per litre. Currently, the only other automaker offering more than 200 hp per litre is Koenigsegg.

The new AMG motor achieves this output thanks to a single turbo. Small displacement and a big turbo makes us worry about lag, but Moers promises the new car will have a better throttle response than the previous 45-series four-cylinder.

New Mercedes-AMG A45's peak power figure confirmed

The head of Mercedes-AMG has confirmed the new A45's peak power figure, with the all-paw hot hatch drawing its urge from a new turbocharged 2,0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine.

Speaking to Road & Track, Tobias Moers said the most powerful version of the upcoming A45 would deliver a staggering 420 hp, which translates to 314 kW. For the maths addicts, that's a full 34 kW up on the outgoing model.

Of course, it’s all but confirmed the Affalterbach-based firm will offer its hottest A-Class in two states of tune: the base A45 (likely to develop around 285 kW) and the A45 S (boasting the aforementioned 314 kW). Both versions will reportedly employ a new, sophisticated version of the Stuttgart-based brand’s 4Matic all-wheel-drive system (complete with a dedicated “drift mode”), along with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.

These two derivatives, of course, will slot in at the very summit of the A-Class range, above the 225 kW Mercedes-AMG A35 revealed at the Paris Motor Show late in 2018.

New Mercedes-AMG A45 engine: peak outputs confirmed

Mercedes-Benz has finally (officially) confirmed the peak power and torque outputs of the “completely newly developed” turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine set to debut in the upcoming new Mercedes-AMG A45 hot hatch (and later roll out to the likes of the A45 Sedan and CLA45, too).

Billed as the “world’s most powerful four-cylinder engine in series production”, the Affalterbach-built powerplant will be offered in two outputs.

In flagship A45 S guise, the M139 engine will generate 310 kW (at 6 750 r/min) and 500 N.m, while in the standard A45 it will churn out 285 kW and 480 N.m. Peak twisting force in the former will be offered between a lofty 5 000 and 5 250 r/min, while in the latter will arrive between 4 750 and 5 000 r/min.

The German firm says this “increasing torque” at higher revolutions makes the engine feel “more free-revving”, while also confirming maximum engine speed of 7 200 r/min.

Mercedes-AMG unveils most powerful four-cylinder engine ever

Mercedes confirms 415bhp power output for hot A-Class, CLA and GLA, and we've got all the details of the new M139 unit

The world’s most powerful 2.0 litre, four-cylinder series production engine has been revealed by Mercedes-AMG, set to feature in its upcoming ’45’ model range.

Developing 415bhp in its most potent ‘S’ form, this completely new 2.0 turbo replaces the engine in used in the previous A45 A-Class, CLA45 and GLA45.

Despite the potency of the outgoing A45 355/376bhp AMG four, engine development boss Ralf Illenberger says that emission requirements, the desire for more power, less weight and the different packaging requirements of Mercedes’ latest generation of compact cars necessitated a complete redesign. “The only carryover parts are a few nuts and bolts.” The new M139 engine produces 382bhp in standard form and 415bhp in ’S’ form, and 354lb ft or 369lb ft of torque.
