Opel Corsa Lite 1.2T (2023) Price & Specs

Remember the Opel Corsa Lite? Well, the nameplate has made a return to South Africa, this time applied to the G2J0-generation hatchback. Here’s how much it costs…

The Opel Corsa Lite nameplate has made a return to South Africa! Back in 1996, the Corsa Lite was launched as a South African-specific derivative, based on the 2nd-generation (S93) Corsa and built right here in Mzansi. Remember the “Lite Side of Life” marketing campaign?

The original Corsa Lite was sold alongside the 3rd-generation (X01) hatch, before production finally ended in 2007. This time, however, it’s not a prolonged lifecycle model and is instead based on the current G2J0-generation version of the German’s firm’s B-segment hatchback.

Somewhat curiously, though, Opel SA has opted to equip the new Lite with its 74 kW/205 Nm turbocharged 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine rather than the naturally aspirated 55 kW motor used in the base Corsa 1.2. For the record, however, the latter variant appears to have been discontinued, with the Lite now – rather appropriately – functioning as the entry point to the range.

The 3-strong line-up thus kicks off with the Corsa Lite 1.2T, which is priced at R349 900 (so, R24 000 more than the old base Corsa 1.2). Next comes the Corsa Edition 1.2T at R356 900 (yes, just R7 000 more), with the 96 kW Corsa Elegance 1.2T 6AT topping the range at R436 900.

It’s an interesting move from Opel parent company Stellantis, which clearly hopes to leverage a badge that remains well known in South Africa. We can’t help but feel, however, the Lite should be more than just R7 000 less expensive than the mid-tier derivative, even if that would mean stripping more standard kit…

Opel Corsa Lite makes a comeback, in name at least

Back in the late 1990s and early 2000s, the Opel Corsa Lite was one of South Africa’s most popular runabouts, and now it’s back – in name at least.

Originally launched as an entry-level version of the second-generation Opel Corsa in late 1996, which was South Africa’s first generation, the Corsa Lite was an entry-level hatch with bare-bones specification and an attractive price tag.

And now the Opel Corsa Lite nameplate is being relaunched in South Africa as a re-specced version of the imported sixth-generation hatchback that was first introduced here in 2021.

Priced at R349 900, it’s not exactly entry-level anymore, but specification is fairly generous and it has also received an engine upgrade.

The Corsa base model was previously powered by a 1.2-litre normally aspirated petrol engine that offered just 55kW and 118Nm, but the new Corsa Lite upgrades to a turbocharged version of this engine.

I think their strategy in SA is to shift people to buy Peugeot instead? We are not getting the new Astra.
Could be, if they really wanted a Corsa Lite they could have offered the old 55kW NA engine, replaced the fancy radio with a basic unit, do the front only electric window thing, as well as removing other luxuries.

The result would have been something in the Polo Vivo range, that would at least give them a fighting chance.

Opel Corsa

Even bolder, even more emotional, even more intuitive to operate and with completely new electric and hybrid drives, the new Corsa will take Opel's traditional strong offer in the small car segment to the next level.

The new Opel Corsa delights with its new design including the characteristic Opel Vizor brand face at the front and the Opel lettering placed confidently in the middle of the rear. State-of-the-art technologies make driving more relaxed. As an option, the new Corsa offers a fully digital cockpit based on Snapdragon Cockpit Platforms from Qualcomm Technologies with new, intuitive infotainment and an up to 10-inch colour touchscreen. The glare-free Intelli-Lux LED® matrix light, which the Corsa brought to the small car segment in 2019, is also even better and more precise - now with 14 LED elements. And the latest interpretation of the small car bestseller boasts high-tech under the bonnet, too. The Opel Corsa Electric now also comes with more power and an improved battery enabling a range of up to 402 kilometres according to WLTP. The other drives are also a real novelty. The Corsa is the first Opel model that will be available as a hybrid with a 48-volt system. The new Corsa thus offers customers a choice of drives, from purely battery-electric to hybrid to highly efficient combustion engines, which is unrivalled in this segment.

"The Opel Corsa has been a bestseller for more than 40 years. In the past two years it was also the best-selling small car in Germany and in 2021 the best-selling car overall in the United Kingdom. For us, this success is a confirmation of our work and provides additional motivation to do even better going forward. The new Corsa is even more modern, even more emotional, and better. With its stunning design, state-of-the-art technologies from higher segments and new, locally emission-free electric and hybrid technology, we want to inspire customers and show them what they can expect from a small car today," said Opel CEO Florian Huettl.
