New Vauxhall Vivaro-e electric van revealed with 188-mile range

Vauxhall steps up its electric onslaught with an EV version of its flagship commercial vehicle

Vauxhall is accelerating its transition to a maker of EVs with the unveiling of the Vivaro-e, an electric version of its flagship van.

The British marque's first electric commercial vehicle will be built in Luton, on the same line as the diesel-engined Vivaro, and available to order from June.

Buyers can choose from two bodystyles: a full-length panel van or a double-cab version with two passenger rows. They can also specify a short or long wheelbase, with Vauxhall claiming a payload of up to 1226kg - only 130kg less than that of the conventionally fuelled Vivaro.

Vauxhall secures record Vivaro-e order from British Gas

Vauxhall to supply British Gas with 1000 electric vans in UK's largest commercial deal for an EV to date

Vauxhall has agreed a deal to supply British Gas with 1000 examples of its new Vivaro-e electric van – the largest EV commercial fleet order made in the UK to date.

The Vivaro-e was launched earlier this year with a 134bhp electric motor and range of 125 miles in standard form, rising to 188 miles with an optional larger (75kWh) battery pack. It will be built on the standard Vivaro production line at Vauxhall’s factory in Luton, with the 1000 examples delivered to British Gas over the next year.

Centrica, which owns British Gas, says it has committed to making its fleet – the third-largest in the UK, with 12,000 vehicles – fully electric by 2030 and that it would be placing further orders for Vauxhall EVs “as soon as they are available”.

It added that it also intends to place an order for the smaller Combo-e, which is due to launch in 2021.

Vauxhall Vivaro-e Hydrogen van arrives with 249-mile range

New FCEV variant of van is due in UK in 2023 with three-minute refuelling and 1100kg payload

The Vauxhall Vivaro van has gained a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) variant with up to 249 miles of range and the same load capacity as equivalent combustion and battery-electric models.

The new addition to Vauxhall's commercial line-up will be sold in left-hand-drive markets by German sister brand Opel from the end of 2021 and is set to make its UK debut in 2023.

The Vivaro-e Hydrogen mates a 45kW fuel cell with three 700bar hydrogen tanks (which can be filled in just three minutes) and uses the same front-mounted 134bhp electric motor as the Vivaro-e BEV.

A 10.5kW lithium ion battery, capable of charging using regenerative braking, is also installed, offering 31 miles' worth of propulsion.

“We're set to add hydrogen to the line-up as an efficient energy system of the future,” said Vauxhall managing director Paul Willcox. “Vauxhall-Opel has more than 20 years of experience in developing hydrogen fuel technology, which offers zero emissions in use, a long driving range and ultra-fast refuelling.
