2025 Subaru WRX tS Gets Even Closer To Being The STI Subaru Refuses To Give Us

An STI tuned suspension and blue interior bits bring the current WRX one step closer to being the WRX STi Subaru won’t give us.

The current generation of the Subaru WRX debuted to some controversy, mostly over its plastic fantastic lower body cladding. That hasn’t stopped buyers though as the brand sold just under 25,000 last year. Subaru dealers seem set to draw in even more customers with a new performance variant for the WRX, the WRX tS.

I know you’re probably disappointed it’s not a full blown STI, but cool your jets because it’s close enough and probably the closest we’re going to get. The WRX tS follows the same formula as the BRZ tS: a performance tuned suspension and lots of blue. The WRX tS takes things one step further though.

The biggest difference with the WRX tS is the addition of STI tuned adaptive dampers and suspension. Using Subaru’s Drive Mode Select system — a system that was previously only available on the WRX GT — drivers can select from comfort, normal and sport modes for the dampers. Combined with high performance Brembo brakes — six piston up front and two in the rear — and stickier Bridgestone Potenza S007 tires, the WRX tS should be more than able to hold its own when the road gets twisty. Sadly no power upgrades have been made to the 271 horsepower 2.4-liter turbocharged engine.

Subaru WRX And BRZ Sales Have Absolutely Cratered This Year

Sales of the WRX are 39 percent year-to-date, and the BRZ's sales have been even worse.

It’s the first workday of the month of June, which means it’s time for the automakers who so graciously still report monthly sales on a monthly basis to show us their spreadsheets. For Subaru, it wasn’t all bad, but it sure wasn’t great, either, especially for the folks who work on the performance side of things. So far in 2024, sales of the WRX have dropped 39 percent compared to the first five months of 2023, and BRZ sales dropped even further. Year-over-year, the BRZ is down a full 45 percent.

The month of May, itself, was also pretty bad for WRX and BRZ sales. The former moved 39.6 percent fewer units than in May of 2023, and BRZ sales were down a whopping 64.4 percent. So while the 1,673 WRXes sold in May isn’t exactly a huge number, Subaru only ended up selling 227 BRZs last month.

Meanwhile, in the same time period, Toyota GR86 sales...well, we can’t actually tell you because Toyota releases its sales reports quarterly. You don’t mind waiting another month for that information, right? While not necessarily a true 1:1 comparison, the Mazda MX-5 Miata is probably the most direct competitor that we have May sales data for (thanks, monthly reporting!), and its sales are down, too. Year-to-date sales were down 30.5 percent, while May sales were down 12.3 percent.

Subaru Will Still Let You Order A CD Player In The New WRX

The WRX is the only vehicle in Subaru’s lineup that offers this throwback option.

There aren’t too many cars left that have CD players from the factory, either as standard or as an option. At this point with digital streaming technology, it’s a throwback not many people use or appreciate, at least in a new car. That’s why Subaru offering a single-disc CD player as an accessory option for the WRX is so wonderful

You’ll find the $375 CD player buried among the 96 accessories Subaru offers for the WRX on its online configurator. The CD player even looks old school, mounted in the center console underneath the armrest, resulting in one having to feed the disc into the player towards the floor of the car.

Can actually confirm this. It is still there

But man oh man is she a joy to drive in PTA, JHB traffic with morons that drive 80 in the fast lane with a guy doing 70 right next to him. The power delivery with the auto is really predictable with a sharp response. Not really sure turbo lag even exists.
It steers for you and does the whole adaptive cruise control thing, comfort mode makes it a limo and sport and normal mode gets you the beast. I think this would be the adaptive shock absorbers.

Getting about 9L/100km.
