WINS FOR LIONS, NORTH WEST AS 1 DAY CUP BEGINS
Sunday, 16 February 2025

CAPE TOWN: Lutho Sipamla starred with the ball by claiming four wickets to help DP World Lions begin the 1 Day Cup with an impactful 40-run win over defending champions World Sports Betting Western Province in Cape Town on Saturday.

The Proteas paceman claimed four for 43 in nine overs as the hosts were bowled out for just 219 in pursuit of 260 – a total built around former home favourite Zubayr Hamza’s 56 off 79 balls (3 fours, 1 six) at World Sports Betting Newlands.

There was also a good win for NWU Dragons on the opening day of action after they overcame Knights by four wickets in Potchefstroom where Janneman Malan played a significant role with his composed 90 (118 balls, 6 fours, 1 six).

It was down on the coast, however, where the Lions were easy winners over the 2023 winners thanks in the main to Sipamla.

After winning the toss and batting, the visitors slipped into some early trouble at 65 for three when Kyle Simmonds (3/40) struck to remove Joshua Richard (29) and Reeza Hendricks (32) after Dane Paterson (2/44) accounted for Wandile Makwetu for a third over duck.

Mitchell van Buuren (48) and Hamza then rebuilt with the key partnership of the innings as they put on 104 for the fourth wicket.

Though bother fell before 200 had come up, Connor Esterhuizen (38), Delano Potgieter (17) and the explosive Codi Yusuf (18* off 8 balls) managed to lift the Johannesburg-based side to above 250.

The home side also struggled during the early part of their chase when they fell to 71 for four, Bjorn Fortuin (2/40) and Yusuf (1/31) largely responsible for the early stronghold.

Hopes were then raised when Edward Moore (66 off 94 balls, 3 fours, 2 sixes) and captain George Linde (55 off 58 balls, 6 fours) strung together a partnership of 90 that finally ended in the 37th over.

Sipamla broke the stand and then got rid of Moore and two others to extinguish all of the hosts’ hopes as they were bowled out for 219 in 46.5 overs.

Meanwhile, at JB Marks Oval, the Knights batted first and were restricted to 257 all out. Jacques Snyman was their key batter, blazing 85 off 77 balls (5 fours, 3 sixes).

Patrick Botha managed 40 and Dominic Hendricks struck 29 with Ruan de Swardt (3/44), Kerwin Mungroo (2/35) and Matthew Kleinveldt (2/39) all amongst the wickets.

Malan and Kleinveldt (42) then gave their side a good start to the chase, and even though the home side lost wickets regularly, they kept up with the rate thanks to the former holding up one end.

He was eventually the last player to fall with the total on 220, but by that time there had been handy contributions from Rubin Hermann (30), captain Lesiba Ngoepe (24) and Tahir Isaacs (21).

De Swardt (19*) and Migael Pretorius (23*) then ended the game in a hurry with the Dragons sealing victory with 3.1 overs to spare.

WARRIORS AND BOLAND COMPLETE WEEKEND OF 1 DAY CUP UPSETS
Sunday, 16 February 2025

DURBAN: An unbeaten century by Jordan Hermann helped the Dafabet Warriors make a strong start to their 1 Day Cup campaign with a commanding 126-run victory over the Hollywoodbets Dolphins in Durban on Sunday.

There was also a significant five-wicket win for Goldrush Boland over Momentum Multiply Titans in Paarl – a match in which Imran Manack and Shaun Von Berg played key roles with six wickets between them – with both winners walking away with bonus-point triumphs.

Hermann was the centurion at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium by carrying his bat for a fine 148* (145 balls, 14 fours, 4 sixes), but there were also telling contributions by Beyers Swanepoel, who thrashed five sixes and six fours in a 43-ball unbeaten 73.

Matthew Breetzke, back from his record-breaking performance with the Proteas in Pakistan, was also in impressive form after plundering 62 off 59 balls (3 fours, 3 sixes) as the Warriors won the toss and batted.

The only wickets to fall were those of Diego Rosier (32) and Breetzke after he put on 116 for the second wicket with Hermann. Swanepoel and Hermann then added an unbroken 150 for third wicket in just under 15 overs to punish the Dolphins and set 344.

In reply, the hosts could only manage 217 all out in 40.2 overs. Former Warriors captain Jon-Jon Smuts top-scored with 58 (46 balls, 6 fours, 3 sixes), while former KwaZulu-Natal all-rounder Andile Mogakane claimed a fine four for 23 in 5.5 overs.

Meanwhile in Paarl, Manack and Von Berg blew away the Titans for just 110 at Boland Park.

Opting to bowl after winning the toss, the former produced stunning figures of 7.4-2-12-3 and the latter was also excellent with 10-0-27-3 to leave the visitors stunned in 41.4 overs.

Dayyaan Galiem top-scored with 45 and the only other player to reach double figures was Roelof van der Merwe with 23.

The veteran spinner then took two for 28 and was supported well by fellow slow bolwer Tsepo Ndwandwa (3/21), but the 111 target was too low to defend as Boland got to their target in 36 overs, thanks largely to Gavin Kaplan (42*).

Good 100 for young brevis yesterday day. Too bad he didn't finish the game. Massive choke from the titans after he got out to lose by 5 to the lions.

TITANS, DOLPHINS EARN FIRST WINS

Thursday, 27 February 2025

CAPE TOWN: Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Matthew Boast both starred to help the Momentum Multiply Titans secure their first win of the 1Day Cup season with victories also for the Dafabet Warriors, Hollywoodbets Dolphins and Knights in the latest round of action on Wednesday.

Rising young star Pretorius was key with the bat for the Centurion-based outfit as he blasted a thrilling 96-ball century, which included seven sixes and 11 fours, in Cape Town against defending champions World Sports Betting Western Province in a 41-run win.

Batting first after winning the toss at World Sports Betting Newlands, Pretorius amassed 120, with important 40s from Keegan Petersen (48), Dewald Brevis (42) and Dayyaan Galiem (48*) lifting the visitors to an imposing 337 for seven.

Despite the sizable total, Jody Lawrence impressed with three for 44.

Half centuries by Valentine Kitme 87 off 94 balls (9 fours, 2 sixes), David Bedingham (69 of 64 balls 6 fours, 1 six) and Kyle Verreynne (55 off 49 balls, 5 fours) had provided Province a sound backbone for the chase.

The home side got to 239 for four at one stage, but Boast (5/38) played a telling role to help dismiss the opposition for 296.

Meanwhile in Durban, the Dolphins overcame DP World Lions by six wickets in a rain-reduced affair at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead.

Delano Potgieter top-scored for the visitors with 56* off 54 balls (5 fours, 1 six) in a total of 183 for nine in 43 overs that came after their opponents won the toss and fielded.

Spinner Prenelan Subrayen was the best of the bowlers with four for 46. Then in reply, Bryce Parsons (81* off 94 balls, 6 fours, 1 six) led the way, together with 52 (57 balls, 3 fours, 2 sixes) by Jon-Jon Smuts, as the home side eased to their target with 3.1 overs to spare.

Victories for the Dolphins and Titans were their first of the season, while Goldrush Boland suffered their first defeat when they went down to the Knights by 21 runs in Bloemfontein.

The Paarl side, who won three from three before Wednesday’s encounter, bowled first after losing the toss with the hosts bowled out for 249.

Dominic Hendricks (55 off 76 balls, 1 four, 1 six) and Seth Fledermaus (52 off 59 balls, 2 fours) hit half centuries, while Akhona Mnyaka and Imran Manack both bagged two for 35.

There were plenty of starts in the chase but no one managed to kick on for Boland – something that proved key. Michael Copeland’s 45 was their best effort as Tiaan Van Vuuren grabbed four for 39.

In the end the Knights restricted them to 228 for nine.

Finally at the JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom, the Warriors were a massive 121-run winners over hosts the NWU Dragons.

Senuran Muthusamy (93 off 82 balls, 6 fours, 3 sixes) and Andile Mogakane (58 off 62 balls, 7 fours, 2 sixes) top-scored for the Eastern Cape side as they posted 278 for eight.

The Dragons’ reply was a poor one as they fell for 157 in just over 40 overs. Jason Raubenheimer proved the most successful bowler in a fine all-round effort with the ball by collecting three for 34.

Another 100 for luhandre Pretorius. Going to put serious pressure on Proteas openers and selectors.

Took protea spinner muthasamy for 5 sixes in one over. This kid is special.

Brevis also going well 41 from 24. Moonsamy also made a 100.

Mahoooerse total incoming. If Brevis stays in, 430+ surely...

Lol, nevermind...

Titans have the Top 5 highest totals in the CSA one days, 3 of them at Centurion. Let's hope Warriors get off to a flyer but it's probably over.

Titans have absolutely massacred the warriors. Too bad it was reduced to 43 overs. Could have been 500 .

Brevis absolutely smashed the knights. 83 from 38. Titans win with 12 overs to spare.
