UK people must now "stay at home"... except for shopping for essentials and work.

Serious question: There is no mention of outside exercise in this discussion. After 21 days most people will be going crazy!? Or do we walk to the furthest possible supermarket instead?

I do regular dog walking, and I know they go crazy if they don't get walked regularly.

You *should* be fine to do that. I suspect the Army will only be in the main areas (e.g CBD) and the like. Certainly I don't believe there will a group patrolling Newlands forest, for example.

So I applaud Cyril for stepping up to make the calls he has made. I've already noted that we're not on the same footing as most 1st world countries out there that are getting whipped by this virus, and when you look at the options in front of him, even though this is devastating I feel like it's the right call.

I've seen thread after thread on Twitter about how companies, stuck in the dark ages, are grappling with the idea of sending employees home or allowing them to just work from home. It's great that Cyril has made this decision for them as it will protect many many people that corporate South Africa would be too weak to defend, while they try to lookout for their shareholders and own back pockets first and foremost.

Lets go 21 days - lets do this thing!

Depends on the employee mentality as well. When your fellow staff think it's 21 days of extra paid leave, that's when your manager gets antsy about the "work-from-home" mantra. Know a guy who switched off his phone on the first day of work from home, manager was not pleased.

I assume it's midnight starting Thursday like midnight Wednesday when petrol price changes. This is why executions were always scheduled at 1 minute past midnight so someone couldn't get an extra day.

I would not step foot outside the property during the lockdown for anything other then necessities... The chances are the police and army have been instructed to deal with people quite harshly who are disobeying the orders

Run around the house 10 times.

You are not allowed to leave your house unless its for food or medical purposes, this means no exercise outside of your property

Well, that sounds really dumb. I can go to the supermarket 5 times a day, and buy one packet of noodles each time. That would get me exercise but would be completely contrary to the guidelines. Needs some flexibility and rational options.

Our company works on weekly reports and proof of work done for those that had to work from home due to self quarantine.
Will be the same for the 21 days.
Think other companies will do the same

I assume we'll need some kind of documentation from work proving we're essential workers if that is indeed the case

Guess so, they are doing so in the UK.
Our company deals with water works, so we might continue as normal

If the police or army are around and ask what you are doing outside and tell them you're exercising. What happens?

Nope you can't leave for the dog walk, the president literally said stay at home except for the list of exceptions. Otherwise everyone goes dog walking, beach sun bathing, etc, and then you end with what australia, portugal and the u.s are busy banning.

Once they have the situation under control locally and are confident there are no more untraced cases, they are going to have to make another tough call. Shutting down the borders and stopping international travel.

If they don't shut down the borders, we will have to repeat this process again until the entire world has a handle on this. China is having this exact problem, people importing the virus back.

You don't need documentation to go to the supermarket! Rational policy would be that if you keep moving, don't loiter and crowds, and don't openly flaunt the rules, nobody should bother you.

Realistically I don't see how people living in informal settlements are going to stay in their shacks for 3 weeks or how temporary shelter will be arranged for all of them within 4 days, in which they're supposed to remain?

I'm assuming house moving companies aren't "essential", do moving tenants just pay the lease in 2 places if they were going to move into an empty place and now have to stay at the current place for another month?
