Today was a hilarious demonstration of the outcomes of having such low pass rates in SA, especially in maths.
It was also a demonstration of how pathetically illqualified many senior officials and Ministers are to hold their positions. Numerous govt officials made the wrong statements about when the lock down starts. Their statements were reported on by the SABC news services.
Morning Live opened with a statement that the lock down starts

" from tomorrow", ie. Wednesday, followed shortly after with a statement "from Thursday", and then shortly thereafter with the original wording " from midnight Thursday". More consternation arose when the two morning presenters appeared to be desperately trying to clarify and the finally a few minutes later, the words "from Thursday evening at midnight".
Clearly, lots of drama was going on in the background.

This isn't fair at all. You are hung up on one date-time issue completely ignoring the solid thinking that has gone into a lot of the measures presented last night.
I'm not a huge fan of the ANC at the best of times but I'm comfortable with leadership at this stage, we are certainly seeing more pro-acative health and economic measures being put in place than even the USA and the UK.
You don't have to like the ANC to give credit where it is due.

Seems a lot of people had the idea to go out to get their shopping for the next week rather than leaving it for the weekend. But no-one was buying huge quantities of anything. I also suspect the first round that was actual stockpiling made people concerned that if they didn't get the groceries today the stockpiling nuts would be back grabbing everything (it's easy to get around per customer limits).

Stockpiling is not the same panic buying. We have been stockpiling for weeks by simply buying a few extra with each shop. This means that we have a buffer and at the same time we are not clearing the TP out of Makro, I'm really not sure why people some people seem not to get this.

What you are describing though seems like more people do actually get it. I hope that the behaviour holds.

Anyone in the boat of your boss forcing you to work during the lock down? My brother and his friend work as technicians for a security company and they install alarms etc.

Their boss has told them they will not be closing down and will work normal hours, can anyone shed some light and who they can contact to get advice about their situation?

Simon Dingle on Twitter has started addressing this. Kudos to him. While he's not capable of legally taking these firms on, often the "shame" will force change. Suggest he dm's him. Link to tweet.

4. What happens if I break the rules during lockdown — for example, driving on the freeway without a valid reason?
You could be punished, with a fine or up to one month in prison.

Yeah I guess it will be difficult explaining why you need to use the freeway to get to KwikSpar.

I presume this was before the lockdown announcement ?

Can I visit elderly relatives who need help during lockdown?
No visiting will be allowed under lockdown, but old-age homes will get the food and support they need, along with children’s homes and youth homes,

Can see this being an issue, as many elderly parents are not in old age homes, live alone and may not or do not drive themselves, thus relying on their children to shop and check in on them.

Why would you need to use a toll road ?

Obviously this might not be relative however in many countries you are only allowed to travel within your local community under lock down conditions, one person per household too.

Many of our local shops are now offering a delivery service, the elderly that I know of are making use of this. Can see plenty of staff in SPAR picking orders etc.

I noticed a sign in Rosmead Spar in Kenilworth a couple of days ago with a Whatsapp number. Unfortunately, I didn't make a note of it as I'm within walking distance.

Edit - their phone number is 021-6833243

I see someone already answered but yeah, I'm not in CPT. That said SPAR/Pick n Pay usually implements practices based on head office instructions. It would be best to call your local stores to see if they are not currently offering or can possibly offer this service.

I imagine it would be harder to implement in parts of the country where the population density is high.

Have gone through a few pages of the thread, but has anyone heard something about dog walking?
