Check your m/board manual and see how the memory slots are used for dual-channel mode and place the RAM according to that.

Seeing as you are mixing RAM sizes, run MEMTEST+ to see that everything is fine. Google 'memtest' if you do not know what it is.

- Supports DDR3 2133(OC)/1866(OC)/1600/1333/1066/800 non-ECC, un-buffered memory
- Max. capacity of system memory: 32GB*
- Supports Intel® Extreme Memory Profile (XMP)"

It should be like this:

DIMM A1 8GB
DIMM B1 4GB
DIMM A2 8GB
DIMM B2 4GB

It's fine to run it 8GB-4GB-8GB-4GB like Rickster said.

Just make sure that the voltages, frequency & latencies for the RAM are the same - like 1.5V, 1333MHz & CL9-9-9-27.
If the frequency & clock latencies are different, then ensure that your BIOS pics the slowest one. If it picked the faster one, then swap the RAM. If swapping the RAM didn't fix it, then you'll have to manually set the values in the BIOS.

Because I set my RAM voltage, frequency & clock latencies manually in my BIOS, I haven't had issues installing different RAM sizes & brands with my Asus P7H55D-M Evo motherboard. Like I started with 2x 2GB DDR3 1600MHz CL8 1.65V, went to 2x 2GB TeamGroup + 2x 4GB DDR3 1600MHz CL9 1.65V Corsair, to 4x 4GB DDR3 1600Mhz CL9 @ 1.5V (Corsair + G.Skill), to 4x 8GB DDR3 1600MHz CL10 1.5V (G.Skill).

i have 8gb ddr 1866 cl9 ram in my pc atm

also have corsair value 8gb 1333 ram that i dont use

i dont want to put it in cuz it will slow the fast ones down
so ya :(
will be nice if there was a workaround that prob

If you are already close to using 8GB of RAM, then you'll benefit much more from having 2x 8GB @ 1333MHz CL9 than 1x 8GB @ 1866MHz CL9!
More slow RAM will make your PC feel faster than less fast RAM. I made the mistake of buying expensive DDR3 1600MHz CL7 RAM for my gaming PC, instead of just tonnes of DDR3 1600Mhz CL9 RAM.

ok well i will test it got the thing let me just get a bechmark program :)

i payed 1.4k for my 8gb ram :/

edit:using performance test 8
2x4gb 1866

read 23608
latency 21
memory mark 2356

16gb total running at 1333
read:23571
latency:26.9
memory mark 2223

so not alot of change :/
if no change in benchmark realworld will be even less
