What I have seen happen is that when companies retrench, people take their package and then start a business. They do this because they don't look at the cold hard facts and numbers. They honestly and emotionally believe that they have a magical winning idea that is going to make them super rich. I have seen a few people end up completely destitute as a result.
As a small buss owner who worked in corporate once upon a time, I agree 100% that people have this idea that a SME is financial freedom, if successful.
But like you said, people don't see the numbers and think that they have the winning formula only to get bitten badly when things crash.
As for that bar that opened, it's a sports bar so I don't think they'll do too badly but they must have balls of steel to take the chance in this economy, especially the interest rates on loans etc
