Sad state of ADSL in ZA

Sorry, not trying to point a finger at Openweb here, these kind of uncapped accounts are what we need and I hope more will become available soon in the market. The last comment about "catch" as if it is too good to be true, just hit a nerve with me about how weak we have been as consumers and knowing what we are supposed to be getting for the money we pay.

True ADSL should be uncapped. Especially at the prices we are paying here in ZA.

It is a sign of how we have become used to poor and inadeqaute service when an offer like this to have 384kbps ADSL for R800, is seen as being so good that is has to involve some "catch" or "gotcha" somewhere.

We get so excited that we got a few gigs over our cap limit, every month people compare the handfuls of Gbs they managed to download before they got capped. And I also notice people using words like they "abused" the network, or "managed to rape Telkom" when they got their 8 or 10Gb a month off their 3gb cap accounts.
I am sure Telkom must be enjoying reading that, seeing how we are feeling guilty about getting the few gigabytes that they already *owe* us anyway, if they were interested in giving us an internationally comparable ADSL service.
We, the customers, are the only ones that have been "abused" and "raped".
People overseas laugh at our ADSL speeds, and the exorbitant ADSL rates we pay.
But this is nothing new to anyone here.

So please, lets not call this so good that there must be some catch. R800 is a lot of money and of course you still need to pay additional connection charges as well to Telkom. R1000 a month for 384 ADSL uncapped?...what a steal ;)
Offers like these from Openweb are great and perhaps are the first steps in trying to get us to have ADSL service remotely on par with the rest of the developing world, let alone the developed world.

Sorry, I guess I'm sick to bits (pun intended) of watching my megabytes everyday and worrying about going to a website that may have a flash content or have a 800k jpg, because I may go over my Telkomheid enforced 3gb cap limit before the end of the month etc.

/end rant :)

You are absolutely right. Frankly I'd put up with a couple hours of downtime a month and some slow browsing during the day from such a pioneering product, just to not have to check my MBs every 5 minutes. I've actually had to put together a spreadsheet to tell me just how much I can use per day for the rest of the month without going over. How pathetic is that?

Unshaped isn't really much of a selling point for IS.

They use satellites. Unshaped won't help you.

Not to demean Openweb in any way, of course. I'd get this if I could afford it.

i'm under the impression that south african internet users have too much money. users are quite content to shell out 800 big ones for an uncapped account on top of all telkoms charges.

SA telecoms exploit u because u let them...

given the options i have, i can either pay R747 for 3 DSL accounts, go deliberately over my limit, still watch what i download, be blacklisted and get labelled an abuser, or i can spend that R50 more, and get what all south african's should be getting. I could definately do with spending less on the internet, but if you need it - this is the best option.

Uncapped is good, but the speed isn't that great. 384kb/s is nothing compared to Iburst or Vodacom 3G. I guess if you want unlimited downloads and you are not too worried about how long they take, it's a great option.

I have Iburst, and I get a constant 75kb/s to 90kb/s download rate, sometimes even faster. 40 isn't that great if you're used to faster.

its got nothing to do with speed, its got to do with price, and iburst is just too expensive and capped!

You're supposed to get 64kbits after you're 'capped', but I'm not sure if you actually get that.

Iburst is actually the cheapest wireless ISP currently available. Take a look at Sentech for instance:

They offer a 256kb/s connection, 3GIG cap and charge you R699pm.

Vodacom 3G HSDPA gives you 1.8mb/s peak (Hardly ever), 1GIG cap and charge you R700pm

Iburst gives you the cheapest option, with a 1.0bmb/s connection, 3GIG cap, and only R699 a month.

I'd say Iburst is the most cost effective wireless provider around, and you still have a connection after you're capped, even if it is just 64kb/s.

384 isnt blazing but its still awesome......

i mean youd be getting uncapped to obviously hit the torrents.if you download a movie it would take around 7 hours to download a 700 mbyte movie rip(calculated at 30kbps)which is simple to do whilst at work or sleeping ;)
So its actually pretty decent.Just having uncapped is amazing.
