And I get my first taste of the great fun that is 3D Printing now...

Halfway through a print last night the filament snapped right after the extruder as its going into the Bowden tube so now I have a fun weekend trying to get it cleared out.

Run a pre-heat, then push filament thought from the bowden with more filament. let it run through until you have a unbroken line again.

I need to strip and re-build my machine sometime.

Oh, and someones given me a second machine, waiting for it. Apparently its a bit of a frankenstein so going to be interesting to see exactly what the hell it is.

I know its useless, but I simply love printing articulating/flexi stuff.

This one is free for the next couple of hours still if anyone is interested.

Yeah, thats the plan for tomorrow morning... failing that I will do the Capricorn upgrade earlier than I planned basically.

As for getting a free printer, thats pretty epic, even if it is a bastardisation of parts... Nice challenge to make it work the way you want.

I've actually run capricorn through out and although its not "neccesary" , I'm still very tempted to do the "hot fix". It just makes more sense to have permanent piece , squashed down against the nozzle. Even with capricorn, you can still get a blob between the tubing and nozzle if the damn clip is loose or slips. If its pushed and screwed in, never going to happen.

Been there before. Took the old tube out and replace the couplers and tube. Managed to rescue the old Bowden tube, but I dont think Ill use anything other than a Capricorn tube again.

Ok, side note and now I'm going a bit crazy. So when I bought my printer and started doing mods there were two "questionable" mods which I'm not sure were phased out with the current builds of printers , fyi I have a Creality Ender 3 ( board modded etc but still the base mechanics )

Mod #1

Z Motor spacer - https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4699747/

Apparently this was suggested to allow a bit of a gab between the Z motor and the frame as it would stress the z-rod but not sure if thats still applicable , particularly becuase of Mod #2

Mod #2

Z lead screw top coupling.

So, fist I saw folks printing a bracket for the top of their z roads, then a bit later there was a major discussion around how the z rod should be left to float and NOT have a top bracket. Now I'm seeing a lot of the top brackets again. Does it need a top bracket or not? Anyone know? Whats annoying is even Creality are now advertising a top bracket?

The first one I’ve never seen a need for, the second one I use,
I've been printing fine without both, my main issue is stringing which is why I' need to do a strip/rebuild...... and finish up the cable management of course

@ToxicBunny how was the printing going btw? Also what filament you using because it it snaps like that then its likely a moisture issue. Having a similar problem with some cctree white I bought recently, Sunlu no issue but also had a much higher melting point, I need to dial the cctree lower by like 10 degrees, melts very easy.

SUNLU

Model : PLA
Diameter Format: 1.75mm
Print Temp.: 200-230℃
Tolerance: ±0.02mm
Print Speed: 50-100mm/s

CCTree

PLA Filament 1.75mm diameter, 1kg net weight, 100% virgin material without cheap plastic fillers or regrind
*Tolerance ± 0.05mm , Vacuumed Sealed With Desiccant
*Spool Size:diameter 195mm + inner hub 55mm height 60mm
* Print Temperature: 190 - 220°C,

The printing was generally going ok actually, had a few issues with prints lifting from the bed in some places but that was a minor thing...

I'm using filament from Build Volumes, but I intend on getting some different brands next week to have a range to choose from rather than just the grey I have currently :). I also think it was probably a moisture issue as well, especially with the humidity from the last few days being off the charts.

Yeah Durban has been crazy, I had snaps and breaks in my filament after a day or two when the machine was idle but we're swinging from 30+ to sub 20 degrees and massive humidity. May invest in a dryer,

Although one dude said, you can also just put a roll on your bed, heat that to 40/50 and put a plastic cover over it, leave for a few hours and works same way.

There's also some printable spool holders where you can just put in those dehydration packets but I dunno if that can cope with Durbs. Pre December no issues.

Might give this a go

Yup, I'm investigating dryers, or at least storage containers that can mitigate the humidity somewhat... just a bit further down the list of things atm since I actually need to sort out the room that the printer will live in first which is going to properly drain my bank account as its going to be a "Makers" room for me and the missus with a Cricut, Printer and all her craft things as well as still being able to be turned back into a spare bedroom when needed.

When I'm not using filament, just toss it in a plastic bin that seals and throw desiccant packets in, I was just quite shocked how this one started causing problems after a day or two on the roll.

My CCTREE ST-PLA filament was also snapping badly from the humidity in JHB; even newly opened spools - got myself a Sunlu filament drier and it works very well. Drop in the spool, dry the filament for 4-5 hours at 50C, then I keep it at 35C while printing. I added a bowden tube from the drier to the extruder so there is minimal humidity exposure from spool to hotend, and have had no issues since.

I did my largest/longest print this week. Took like a day in total to print everything.

Printer is slowly paying itself off which is awesome.
