Cheapest will be if you can find someone who gave up on the hobby and is selling for cheap. Building it yourself from parts bought from china will still cost quite a bit even if you go down the dvd writer path. Put together a parts list and compare it to the Ender 3 and you will get close to or over its price pretty quickly even with the cheapest parts available.
yeah haven't found any 2nd hand for sale

Need to price a BoM for the online ones

Any guidance if one wanted to get into 3D printing as cheaply as poss?

Been looking on the webs and those DVD Writer DIYs look like they will cost a couple thousand already and no guarantees they work
The EasyThreeD printers are apparently dirt cheap.

Dont expect much from it. It cant do fine details well. But if you just need it to print small things cheaply. Then could be an option

cnc finally running again. Had an issue where it was randomly stopping. Ran power from the room next door and issues stopped - faulty power somewhere. Just need to get a proper vacuum to connect to that dust cover. And add proper mounting points in the mdf for clamps so can stop using g-clamps like that.

okay I watched a couple of videos. would it ONLY be good for printing single pieces items? or can one make pieces connect and glue/join together etc.

Like what use would I actually get out of this?

Also how much is a decent spool of filament in SA?

If you want to tinker endlessly with the printer - buy the cheapest thing you can find. If you want to focus on CAD and designing parts and enjoy the printing process then rather save up for something better.

I do hate you in ever so slightly the nicest possible way.

I dream of having such a thing in my workshop.

no idea, but the less the better. will soothe my conscience if it ends up in a corner after a few weeks/months

So in all honesty, having just obtained a 3D printer myself...

You are going to be in for R5k (give or take) for anything even half way acceptable... and filament will run you between R350 - R500 for a spool.

Something like the Ender 3v2 is probably your best option for starting.
Also I wouldn't worry about it ending up in a corner in a few weeks/months, once you print a few things you just find more and more things to print.

As an example, my printer has sat for about 2 weeks atm since I'm busy designing new blade guides for a dirt cheap semi-industrial bandsaw that I picked up. I'm also being a bit shtoop atm since spending a fortune on other things that I don't want to burn through filament too quickly just yet.

Love the setup @saor !

Better building than buying the CNC in the end saor?

I would like to get a decent lazer unit for doing motor name plates and boiler and pressure vessel name plates etc.

I have three printers that run 24/7 . and its all @howardb 's fault for that beautiful print he posted a while back.

It started out with camera mounts for commercial diving helmets, its now a nearly a full time job doing company Media Marketing - Promotional Gifts.

I doubt the R 1,999 from takealot would last a month, rather get the cheapest Creality Ender . If you can find stock in SA

Busy looking at Creality CR30 as I can feed it lots of work.

Upside of building is it gets you super familiar with the machine. But with so much else going on it took far too long to assemble & troubleshoot. And I'd prefer something with a sturdier frame in order to cut metal (or at least ALU). We need to sturdy this up with more brackets but even then there's going to be too much play in the system to deal with machining steel properly.

Be nice to get a smaller off-the-shelf machine for metal but not too bothered right now, will get plenty use out of this machine as it is.

Just delivered this little unit. Will play around next week.

Would also love to get a metal capable of CNC but yeah, the bank balance definitely doesn't cater for something like that.
