Are they available yet?

Is there an upgrade path? Hopefully FREE swapout?

I HAVE to upgrade my current lappy (Fujitsu Siemens Amilo M1424) to a full "Desktop Replacement" type machine (FS Amilo Xi 1546) due to workload demands. New machine has a PC Express Card :(

So do most (all?) new high end Core 2 Duo laptops.

What gives, Vodacom?

Otherwise, end of my 3G era. At least I will save on the still non existent Pre Paid Data Bundles ;)

 Maybe explain how Vodacom must sort this out?

When you get a new phone (worth a few thousand bucks) on a contract and a new model comes out, you don't get a free upgrade to the new phone, do you?

The contract is calculated so the phone is subsidised over the period.

When you upgraded your laptop recently, was it a free upgrade, i.e. did Siemens give you the new laptop for free or did you buy it? Will they supply you with a new hard-drive as new, bigger models are released?

Obviously no. With any technology you buy into the cycle at some point. As new technologies become available you get into the upgrade cycle.

It's the same with data cards. You bought a data card at some point and can upgrade after the contract period, but if you want to change before then, surely you can't hold Vodacom responsible? Especially since you changed your laptop.

Just like you don't hold your TV manufacturer responsible for giving you a new TV or Plasma, every time a new model becomes available.

I've got stacks of PDA's, Phones, laptops, PC's and other toys I bought over the years and would love if the manufacturers gave me the latest models for free, but then how exactly will they stay in business?

What I suggest you do is see if you can get an early upgrade and how much it's going to cost you. Then sell your current data card for that (or higher) sum and do the upgrade to a PCI-X card.

But you'll have to wait a while, they're still on their way to the retail channel.

@v3g, are the new PCI Express Data Cards packaged and shipped with the adapter to PCMCIA that Chris Ross demoed on Friday, and does this apply to Option and Novatel and Huawei?

@WRX1KNP, perhaps you should consider the Huawei E220 USB HSDPA modem - IMO better than the PCMCIA data cards :).

Hi V3G, IC

That probably came across incorrectly - I am not expecting Vodacom to upgrade for free, what I actually meant / implied is will there be a "trade up" path - my bad, post was done in a hurry

And the Huawei E220 does sound like a good option. Just not sure if I am going to continue with 3G, the convenience and in my own case, reliabilty, performance have been outstanding. And Vodacom got our "remote" tower (Bishopstowe) 3G enabled on schedule - subject of another thread - thumbs up to the Durban Voda guys & V3G. Can't understand why folk have all the 619 & other problems they have - since upgrading my firmware I stay connected all day. But at R2/Mb .... I am prolly going to have to switch to the WISP (Global Web Intact) setup that everyone else is using at the office.

Decisions, decisions ;)

Yeah, sorry for the long reply, but I get these "Vodacom must give me a new card for free" mails, quite often. For some reason, people see datacards different from other comms devices.

ic, not 100% sure but it looks like it will come with an adaptor. Makes sense.

I also prefer the E220. It seems to be better in low signal condition, but that's a pure 'gut-feel'. :)
