Has anyone tried international data roaming ? Seems a trifle expensive.

Is it not maybe better to buy a pre-paid data bundle in that country (think predominantly of the UK and Germany here).

If anyone has tried this and has any tips, please tell me more..........

ye, rather go overseas. Buy a al-cheapo simcard and some airtime and surf Via UK or Germany's Infrastructure. Prices are cheaper too (better deals , even though it is in Pounds or Euro's)

Prepaid SIM for data in UK

I recently faced this issue for an extended UK trip. The best solution then (several months ago, and things change rapidly) was a prepaid SIM from Orange, which gave you a 'bonus' of several MB of data to start you up. Be prepared for far higher prices than here, though; even with the 'incentives' I was paying about GBP 1 per megabyte, or about R14. But as I said, things may have changed since -- and it's still bound to be better than the exorbitant roaming fees.

Heading for Kiwiland in a few months -- anyone know anything about prepaid data in New Zealand perchance?

when you roam in Europe (eg UK, Germany) with your Vodacom Sim, and stick to Vodafone network, you should be able to keep costs to approx R14/MB. See the Vodacom website for more info.

That's what I was going to suggest too, thought it was R10/mb actually.
