I don't know about the range on those things

Yes, the range may not be great, after all it works on a battery - depends on your requirements.

I will test it as soon as I get mine - I want to use it for travel, so the range is not an issue (hotel rooms, airports, etc).

At home I will push my Cell C 3G through a higher power Netgear Router.

please tell me if i get the 5GIG R2999 package and the 2GIG one with one E1820 modem will i still get 21Mbps (roughly) with both sims because i know the 2GIG package says its only 7Mbps?

Go take a look at the speedtest thread. I would say the average is about 3-5Mbps. You're not going to clock 21Mbps any time soon. 21Mbps is the shared throughput of the tower.

I did manage to get 10mbps down once, but, yes, you are not really going to see that.

Where can one purchase an E585 locally at a reasonable price?

Anticipating the arrival in JHB of Cell C next week....

I've had a quick search (including the Dovado site) and not found what I need.

I hope to sign up for the R2999 Cell C data package (Mon, Tue or Wed? :whistling:).

Anyone out there using the combo of Dovado UMR and the USB modem (I believe its the Hauwei e1820?)?

What I'm after is the settings for the UMR.

I understand the Cell C e1820 contains control software for the PC, but not sure how this is used by people using the Dovado UMR?

If there is a thread about this, I've missed it!

EDIT: Make that WED. The lady at Cell C Cresta said they are not allowed to sell before the launch. Wed I repeated.... No reply.

I have the Dovado UMR and simply plugged in the E1820 modem. It picked it up fairly quickly, just be patient. I change no settings on the router itself. I also have the R2999 Cell C data package. THe only issue I have picked up was that the speed is slightlt slower using the router than straight into my PC, but works well. It is connected to the DOvado 24/7 with no issues.

Good Luck

Hi Tobi: Are you using the latest software version/update on your UMR?

I'm surprised to hear it works without any intervention. AFAIK, the Dovado has to be configured manually (the Modem tab: Settings & PPP). Mine is currently configured for Neotel.

I connect my UMR directly to the desktop. If wireless devices have somewhat slower speeds it wouldn't bother me that much.

Default settings should wor, ie APN internet, etc etc. PPP call string is default

My firmware version is 4.3.0

Review:TP-Link MR3420 3G Wireless N Router & Cell C HSPA

Hi,

Just thought I'd post my experience with the TP-Link MR3420 3G Wireless N Router and its use with the E1820 dongle that comes with the Cell C 60 GB (5GB per month) bundle.

Took this decision realising I needed someway to share my internet connection between my living room (xbox 360) and my PC (bedroom) because a really long lan cable was just not gonna cut it. And this after explaining my needs to a incredible connection salesperson who clearly thought I was insane or form the planet Pluto considering I wanted a 30 metre cord which for some reason is a strange request from someone in the consumer space.

I purchased my router from bidorbuy.co.za via uniterm direct http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/2797...N_3G_Router_for_use_with_3G_4G_USB_Modem.html after shopping around for a cheap router this seemed like the cheapest but I wasn't sure about performance. Having put aside my initial reservations I decided to take the plunge an ordered my router last week.

Cost R499 and with delivery of R70 it was still cheaper than most other 3G wireless routers. Service from the selling party was amazing. The guy responded within 5 min via e-mail after the order was placed and looking at Uniterm's comments section on bidorbuy you can see these guys are one of the best and highly rated seller's on the website with no negative reviews and over 100 positive reviews. The guy promised to have it delivered within 3 days because I set up delivery at my parents place as I was busy at work. They delivered in 2 days. Enough said.

The actual router is pretty neat and fits in nicely on any computer desk disappearing into the backgroud. Initial setup requires a PC but when I entered my router settings it seems the guys at Uniterm had preconfigured it and all I had to do was add a password the wireless connection to improve security so that any enterprising neighbour didn't start leeching my precious bandwidth.

Pros:
1. Quick setup with very easy to understand instructions that are clear and concise.
2. I ran mine overnight and be barely got hot.
3. From the time of unboxing had it setup in under 5 min and this considering I was changing the actual router settings via web interface which is generally a pain with lotsa of acronyms and weird words like PPPoE etc
4. Price.
5. Its also a wireless router.
6. Once connected maintains the connection. (While using it I did not experience the strange Network suddenly disconecting problem that many of us have been experiencing intermittently)

Cons:
1. Takes close to 1-2 min to actually connect to the Cell C HSPA network. Using the colours on the speedstick it first connects to EDGE and than trys HSPDA and finally tries HSPA and connects seemlessly.
2. Unable to check data balance with speedstick in router.

In conclusion this is a very reasonable priced router and though not neccassarily competing in the same price braket it certainly provides the features that many would be looking for in such a device at a very reasonable price.

Update: Connecting an Xbox 360 produces a strange problem. When first connected the xbox 360 will say unable to connect even though the router shows HSPA+ (Cyan) but if you try to reconnect to Xbox Live after 1-2 min (without restarting the 360 or the router) than it quickly connects to LIVE.

I assume that its the DHCP service and that enabling a static IP may solve this "lag" problem but I don't really want to change the settings in anyway because it works very well.

Another Pro: the E1820 has a hbit of getting very hot to touch when running and I noticed that this was not a problem when connected to the router.

Thanks for posting a more wordy review MightyMuffinMan - I was much too lazy lol

Here is my setup:
Modem: Vodafone K3765 @ R399
Router: TP-Link 3420 @ R499
Router Firmware: 3.11.10 Build 100901 Rel.52652n

I know my way around a PC and hardware but when it comes to networking, I am a completely moron but even I found the TP-Link setup to be very quick and very painless.
I initially tested the router with my E220 which worked flawlessly. The router, however, was unable to detect my K3765. The firmware upgrade fixed this and took a whole of 5 minutes to download the file and perform the update.

I was also very pleased with the service I received from Uniterm Direct. I sent an email to them to confirm stock and Jono replied within 5 minutes. I ordered on Monday, paid via EFT and had my router and 2 USB Wireless N adapters delivered at 7:30am on Wednesday.

As some added security I am using MAC Address filtering as well. In the event that someone is able to hack your wifi password, they still won't gain any access to your network unless you've allowed the MAC address in the router config.

Cons:
1. Takes close to 1-2 min to actually connect to the Cell C HSPA network. Using the colours on the speedstick it first connects to EDGE and than trys HSPDA and finally tries HSPA and connects seemlessly.
I found this as well but only the first time I attempted to have the router connect to the 3G - every other attempt was a lot quicker

All-in-all, I'm one happy camper!

How much data do you use to keep the connection active 24/7 using the TP-Link router? Has anyone done the test?

What MightyMuffinMan said. I'm also very happy with th TP Link and Uniterms service.. Followed bdt's advice earlier on in this thread and drove to the East Rand from the West Rand.
I knew nothing about setting up networks but got it right very quickly.

I use the TP-LINK 3420 from Uniterm as well. I have being having a hasel with it though. The router is in the study and close to the computers, (Apple"s) at times the connection stalls, I cannot even enter the router with the 192.168.1.1 to check the connection. To rectify I switch off the Airport facility (like disabling your wireless connection on windows) then switch it back on and everything is fine for awhile. I don't know if the problem is interference or not I have moved the router to other locations, switched channels but still seem to have this problem. I now use a Nexaire router which is a 802.11 b/g and not a 802.11 b/g/n like the TP-Link. The Nexaire is however very stable. I would prefer to use the TP-Link though as it have some configuration settings I would like to use, any ideas why its stalling.

I have had the same problem with Apple notebooks and Netgear (amongst other) Wifi routers. IMO it is an Apple networking problem, that sometimes appears to allocate IP addresses over addresses that already exist (when using DHCP). I have never seen this with Windows.

Seems to be fairly common - search with Google.

TP-Link 3420, any issues with using this wirelessly with a PS3 or Mede8er.

Seems very well priced compared to the Dovado?

The Dovado's are good kit, and they provide regular firmware updates.

But if you don't use some of the extra features (eg Home control via SMS), then they are too expensive compared to products like the TP-Link 3420, etc.

I'm still planning to control my house via Dovado, SMS, as well as other control devices, but I just never get around to it - I need to retire !
