You won't believe it, but when I arrived home today (Somerset West) I by chance saw the 3G reception icon on my p990 for the first time!
I couldn't believe my eyes, thought the phone got somehow 'stuck' (since I have 3G in Stellenbosch and see the icon there), and rebooted my phone. But behold the 3G icon came back after reboot.
I was about to connect to the internet to test the connection speed, but just then my wife came home from work and I couldn't test immediately. A few minutes later the icon disappeared..
But this is not all bad news. When 3G was implemented in Stellenbosch, I saw the same intermittend behaviour at first, so I hope this is a sign that they are busy installing/upgrading the selected towers to 3G here in town.
Keep a lookout for 3G coverage on your phone / data card and let us know.
Cheers

Or your 3G signal is marginal so your phone "chooses" to use GSM instead. Check under network settings if you have a UMTS only setting.
Hi, I thought that might have been the case too. As a test I've set my phone to "3G only", but then it said "Emergency calls only" and my GPRS coverage icon disappeared as well.
So there was a 3G signal, but only for a few minutes.
Well lets see what happens
MTNDD
For the last two weeks my father has picked up a weak (-101dBm) 3G/HSDPA signal in Helderberg Village, not sure if this is from the Somerset West cluster or the Stellenbosch / Techno Park cluster.
Here is the reply from Coverage

Good Day
3G is introduced in clusters so the “glitch” that the you speaking of is merely testing.
When the rollout will be completed cannot be determined.

Hi MTNDD, thanks for your quick response! I just hope that was a sign that they are busy implementing in Somerset West. There were no more 'glitches' since.
At Ginggs, it must be the Stellenbosch tower (or one from the Cape Flats) your dad is picking up at Helderberg Village. No signal on the 'sea side' of the mountain.. Thanks though.
Somerset West has got 3G!!!!!!!!
Thanks MTN! Don't know how long it will last (between tests), but for now I get 15K download speeds.. 3 times better I had with plain GPRS.
MTNDD, please let me know when this cluster get officially activated.![]()
