Is there such a thing? A 3G router that can be carried about all day providing data in my immediate area? Battery life is obviously the thing and a decent package from someone to properly cater for like 10-20GB a month.

My Huawei B683 can work for days without any attention. There is no battery, it is powered from AC mains.
It will reconnect automatically if signal is dropped, or power interrupted. For the user it is transparrent/unnoticed, unless power interruption is longer. To prevent firmware related interruption it can be programmed for scheduled reboot at a specific time. Is this what you are looking for?
Then look for Telkom or Cell C deals with LTE router B593 or B315.

Huawei MiFi devices work well,
I don't know if they last all day,
but I did use one for about 4/5 hours and not sure how much battery life was left.

Newer ones have a decent battery +1

Might be worth a look - perhaps paired with a powerbank. Just tired of suddenly having no connection during a day.

The TPLink looks pretty great though...

I've been testing a couple of these since I posted here and this one wins hands down for me. Excellent range, stupendous battery (min 24h) and a pretty excellent interface. Looks like it may end up able to run DDWRT as well which would be pretty sweet.

Now all I have to do is find the best 3G provider and buy data from them. No more Vodacom bundles for me.

You can also carry a portable battery with.

Yeah, tested that - ended up being an issue for me because I'd leave one of them at home by mistake :D - YMMV of course. My only complaint with the TP-Link is that it's basically a brick but if it sits in my backpack, it's all good. And at 5200 mah, it carries anything I *really* need to power.

Where did you get yours? Keen to order one myself.

Sounds more like a network problem than a modem problem concerning coverage.

Get a cheap 3g tablet and use that as the mifi device (would have to be in your backpack). My Lenovo 7" A3000 battery last for a week if I don't use the device, and since the main battery drains is the screen, if you're just using network parts, I am sure it will last a day or 2.
