3G winding down in Centurion

3G is operating like a flat battery here in Centurion, especially Lyttelton. When I connect its like:"Look mommy, I am going really fast". A few minutes later and it sucks. I get a few bytes per second and eventually nothing works.

Yesterday I was busy with a PHP page and I needed to secure a few details before logging off. It took me 1/2 hour to get a 15kbyte file uploaded. I had to use another internet connection to test it as the process requires 6 pages to load.

To get more speed I have to refresh/reconnect. This is irritating because everytime I want to email, receive email or access internet I have to disconnect and reconnect.

Sometimes this refresh thing works for a few minutes other times seconds. I find disconnecting and reconnecting gives a bit of relief. If I want a bit longer uptime I have to disconnect from the network (i.e. Dash off) and then reconnect. Maybe it is the time I take to get everything started again that is adding to the 'added performance'.

This only stated a few days ago. The funny thing is that I don't get any disconnections, the connection just slows down to nothing. At the present location I used to get 40 to 50kbyte/s downloads.

What really ticks me off is that I wanted to use my last 50Mbyte yesterday and now it is all gone.

I have just checked my Outlook response time. It is already taking 10 to 20 second per email account just to check if there is incoming email. In about 5 minutes I will have to reconnect.

Anybody else with the same problem?

Slower than Dial Up with me

I have been experiencing the same problem for the last two days, but not all the time. Did a speed test this morning.

At 9:29 the Vodacom speedtest showed a line speed of 58,25kbps. Directly after this (9:35) I got a line speed of 15,10 kbps.

Internet Frog speed test indicated a speed as follows:

Download speed 25,6 kbps
Upload speed 10,7 kbps
Quality of service 14%
Round trip time 1058 ms
Maximum pause 1999 ms

What is happening?

Is this at your office? In Irene?

No, at another client in Lyttelton. At my house in Wierda Park I just get plain disconnects but I am use to that. If the light flashes I just reconnect.

The speed has definitely improved since this morning. I only had to reconnect once.

Maybe it was an overload over the last few days of the month. I am doing a quick test right now and I am getting between 40 and 52 Kbyte/s download speeds. Just a real bitch that I couldn't use my last 50Mbyte.

Interesting reading this as I'd just popped in to comment how poor the service is in Durban North this evening compared to what I experienced today on the reef.

Centurion (South western end of Jean Avenue) was fast, and at OR Tambo Airport things were flying. Back home - well crawl does not adequately describe my current experience....

Hopefully I'll be able to upload this post.

Yesterday was particularly bad. At one stage I could only ping (perfect) local sites, but could not get email or surf on port 80.

Vodacom, someone fiddled with working settings and screwed up. Put it back the way it was.

If it ain't broke then don't try and fix it.

Around what time did you see the problem starting up? Is it still the same or better?

Are the 3G HSDPA disconnects in the (Wierda) area EVER going to go away? It happened about 5 times last night and seems to be an ongoing problem.

If I switch to a normal MTN edge card, no problems!

Pass me the Call Desk number you got on this and I'll check what they're doing about it.
