What's up with MTN's pathetic data speeds. I can't believe this. I was trying to send someone a e-mail tonight. 3 Files of 400kB each. After almost 50% done I get a time out. Try sending the files one by one. Almost 100% and I get a time out.

Then I resize the files to 150kB each and send them one by one. Then they go through. Maximum upload speed = 60kb/s

Now it took me about 3 disconnects before I was able to make this post.

I had excellent HSDPA speeds here in Brackenfell for a long time now. These past week it's pathetic.

Hi
This could be due to congestion. Have you tried switching to EDGE/GPRS and checking if the upload speeds increase?
Remember HSDPA only enhances the download speed. Does not really do much for uploads. :)

I'm having problems with Browsing as well. I have to disconnect every few minutes to get the connection active.

Well, I cant switch to GPRS/EDGE only ..
I use Linux, and no matter what modem commands I throw at my E220 it seems insistent on switching back to HSDPA..

Oh and in my case the slow speed is on downstream.. not up..

Nah, doesn't make a difference. Modem is set on GPRS/EDGE only now. Still the same problem. It took me almost 2 minutes to make this post.

Thanks anyway DD. You always try to help.;)

I think I'd better log off now. It feels like I'm going to get some kind of a attack or something.

Posting to HelloPeter.com seemed to get some reaction - give it a try.

Last time I posted to HelloPeter.com and some dimwitt called to pay lip service and hinted that the problem was only in my area, I refered them to this forum.
I would repost to HelloPeter.com and complain that a dimwitt called, and eventually someone more knowledgable called.

Mtn upload throttled

Mtn limits uploads to <64 kbs. I tried Vodacom and regularly get upload > 300 kbs.

I (am trying) to run a business here with these pathetic download speeds. Have posted ad nauseum on the hellopeter.com website and every time same copy/paste response. Have had calls with promises that someone will come and help me or cancel the contract, i am still waiting. Perhaps Dr.Data can shed some light? I have been asked by MTNDD to run some tests, which I did and sent to him. 90 something kbps maximum I can get with full strength signal on HSDPA with external antennae. Any time of day or night although at night (when I access overseas stock markets) I have to put prepaid Vodacom SIMS in the hardware just to be able to make ends meet, although not much better than MTN. I am really struggling and my earnings are taking a serious knock here.

Is there no-one at MTN that can please at least try to help me out or if it is hardware issue in my area at least let me out of the contract as I am (like all of us) trying to make a living here...

Hi

Please can you PM me the exact location details. I am assuming that the Data number that I have already been PMed is the one in question. I will see what I can detect from my side.

I also use a prepaid sim for data, mainly browsing on my Nokia 6680 (3G). Get frequent disconnects & I also noticed my phone takes much longer to boot once the prepaid sim is inserted. My regular sim is 3G.

Hi
Are you using the handset as a modem or are you just browsing on the actuall handset. If you using the handset as a modem, how do you connect to the PC: USB, Bluetooth or IR ?

Hi
Are you sure not the USB cable thats faulty. I remember I had a similar problem. My cable was faulty, and if the handset moved, the connection between the handset and PC drops and kills the packet data conection. Can you test another cable or maybe bluetooth if possible?

I am very careful not to move the cable or phone as it is very difficult to create a connection with the Pop Port & that it disconnects quite easily. This is one thing I do not like about Nokia Phones. I believe there are newer Nokia phones coming out wit a mini USB connection - much better.

I do not have another cable or Bluetooth on my PC. Will a bluetooth connection via a dongle be more stable?

That correct. The Nokia N95 has a USB connector. Much better than the Pop Port.;)

So the Nokia N95 has a Mini USB Connector? That is good news. The gsmarena website must be wrong then.

I am due for an upgrade in September & I am on a MyCall 100. Wonder what will the pay in be then. Currently it is R3 600.
