4K gaming or data caps: Something’s gotta give

The Remedy Entertainment sci-fi adventure Quantum Break is 178.1 GB on the Xbox One X. If, like me, you have a 1TB data cap with your internet service provider, downloading that one game will consume more than one-sixth of your total for the month. With games at these sizes, consumers now have to consider both the cost of the game and the effect it will have on their limited internet service. That should worry Microsoft, Sony, Netflix, and any other company that trades in data-intensive entertainment.

With the launch of the Xbox One X, 4K gaming is now on PCs and twfo of the three major consoles. This is part of an irreversible transition to that standard. Amazon and Walmart showcase 4K TVs. By the time the 2018 gift-giving holidays roll around, you may have to put in some extra work to find a new 1080p display.

But 4K gaming has a consistent ongoing cost-increase associated with it. And if you have a data cap, that cost could turn into a constant, nagging anxiety in the back of your mind.

They need to spend a year in a non-fibre SA suburb to appreciate that 1TB cap...

I don't understand why people don't just get uncapped accounts. The last thing I want to worry about is how much data I have left. With a fibre line, a 178Gb download is only hours away from completion. Sure, it's tougher for those on ADSL and LTE etc.

Also.. yeah, a 1TB cap? Don't know any ISP here that offers that. Might as well just go uncapped.

Uncapped unshaped unthrottled with zero FUP and a decent contention ratio if you don't want any surprises...

Because uncapped in this country is generally throttled to **** (see: Afrihost), so the only way to get decent internet is capped.
And then you get "uncapped" packaged like the Telkom LTE I'm on where there is actually a 300GB cap. Yay.

Maybe they can learn from fitgirl and use compression to reduce the download size to 1/2 or 1/3 even. Only downside is the installation time increases as you need to uncompress the data while installing.

See this is exactly why I we use Neotel now. Couldn't take the throttling, shaping, etc. Been using Neotel for 2 years now and have never been throttled, shaped etc. The only real problem is online gaming has higher ping than telkom. For example, a european server on telkom will usually have a ping of 170-190 whereas with Neotel it's 190-210.
