If Telkom thinks the trial has been a success then yes, they will replace the 1Mbps service with the 4Mbps service.

And are we going to have to fork out more cash to "upgrade" from the 1024 service to the 4Mbps service?

Gimme a T, gimme an E, gimme a L, K, O, M..

I would guess so. I'd bet that not even they are sure yet.

I reckon that they will be upgrading our "account" to 4mb/s as well ... ;-)

Once you give someone a taste of something better they dont like going backwards. Its clever marketing. In the States its done with lots of retail items. You get to try it out for a couple of days and if you dont like it you can return it and they will refund your money no questions asked. Most dont return it. more items are sold.

Telkom are being clever here.Even if they dont charge more for the 4Mbs service and introduce lower priced and lower speed services most will not want to downgrade once having had the speed.

People must be smoking some seriously good crack if you think Telkom won't charge you extra for the 4mb :D

AntiThesis, yur saying precisely what i wanted to type :>>

Since telkom's last price drop the Line rentals are :
384K is R245 ,512K is R362 atm, 1024K is R516

Howcome do they charge the ppl so heavily for only a minor speed increase
from 384K to 512K (a mere 128K diff, or 10-15kb per sec diff)

Now we know the 1024K was the l33T connection to have, before this 4mbit talks..

So the 1mbit was priced heavily too, but i doubt if 4mbit will have same pricing as the 1mbit did. Since this is technically 3 times faster than a 1mbit??

So if a 128K upgrade costs a ruff extra R140 (384K to 512K) or a extra R154 for another 512K upgrade *so it does seem to get cheaper the more speed u get*

But even so, i should bet on a ruff R750 to R900 for 4mbit line speed (access charge)

my 2cents.. Feel free to comment

Well at the end of the day, they could just say hey... 4mbit costs R750 to R900 +- , or u could downgrade to 1mbit for free (considering they upgraded you to that line.. and u didn't ask to be upgraded)

And still be paying R516 then

“The cost of the 1024 service offering will apply to the ‘up to 4Mbps' offering,” says Steven Hayward, Telkom managing executive for retail marketing.

The DSL 1024 access rate of R516, plus line rental and ISP charges, will remain for the duration of the trial. It is likely rates will stay the same if the service becomes a permanent Telkom broadband offering.

I don't know though

When telkom says "It is likely". It usually means, (The following words are alot of bullcr@p).

Saying the prices will change before we charge a permanent pricing for the "up to 4mbit" line rental/access charge :>>
