Johannesburg - A total of 5 412 motorists were trapped speeding by speed cameras on Christmas Day, said Johannesburg metro police.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the motorists were photographed on the M1, M2, N1 and N3 freeways in the city. All are 120km/h zones.

"The average speed of these cars was 145km/h," said Minnaar.

He said they would face fines of about R600 each.

"Today's operation was in support of the Arrive Alive campaign, which gives an indication that there is still a huge percentage of cars which travel in excess of the speed limit."

Not to bad, that's R3.2 million in one day. I wonder which pocket it will end up in.

It's easy money to just put up a camera and wait for the fines to roll in.
On Christmas Eve when the police were in demand, at least 12 of their Metro vehicles were busy in Camps Bay, Bo-Kaap and Adderley Street closing roads and babysitting the film shoots. I wonder what tw*t makes these decisions at such a busy period?

They should take that as a hint to raise the speed limit to 140. But no then they would actualy have to work to make money.

5 412

Absurdity. While 900+ die. Certainly wasn't this 5412. What does this tell you?

1. there is no law?
2. the law is absurd?
3. the law is wrongly applied or not at all?

So 5412 thought it perfectly reasonable to speed. I wonder why?

Speed is not the real factor in accidents and fatalities.
Last year I read a breakdown on the accidents during the festive season. The reason always had speed in it but it would be like loss of control and excesive speed, tyre blow out and excesive speed. Its all BS.
Stupid speeds like over 160 on our roads granted, is not likely to get you home safely but an average of 140 is quite reasonable. A tyre blow out has the same effect at 100 as at 140. Why ? At anything above 80km the tyre with retain its shape due to centrafugal force as soon as you slow down to 80-90 or exert force on it like cornering if it is the wheel under load it collapses. Most blow outs are punctures it feels like a blow out because it collapses and the tyre ends up shredded on the rim so you cant tell anyway.
Loss of control can happen at 80kph.
My question is how much investigation is going into accident scenes to actually prove the speed at which the vehicle was travelling at the time of the incedent. I think its a plot to keep the excuse that preventing speeding will solve all the road fatality problems.

Like it has been said in so many treads, driving to slow (40-50km/h on the highway) is also so damn dangerous. How many of them (unworthy bakkies with over a ton of junk) did they remove of the road?

The real danger is unroadworthy taxis etc. but its easier to go after the soft targets with cameras clearly.

Corruption within the national and provincial traffic authorities.

IMHO the real problem today.
