Found this interesting article. It will probably apply if you have a Canon 60D or similar.

5 Lenses You Must Have for Canon EOS 7D

In summary;

Prime Factor - Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens
The Standard Zoom - Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM
The Telephoto Zoom - Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens
The Wide-angle Zoom - Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Lens
The Super Telephoto Zoom - Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM
Alternative to the Super Telephoto: The Macro Prime - Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM

The author then goes on to say that if money was no object he
suggests the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L II USM and Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM instead of Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM because no matter how good the 17-55mm, there is an allure to being the proud owner of the "Big 3 Zoom" from Canon
.

Can't say I agree with this as you lose the IS and you now have to carry two lenses around for no additional focal length.

If someone gave me the 17-55 or the 100-400 I'd sell them asap. I'm happy with the kit I've got now but I'd probably add the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II alongside the f/4 version I already have.

Then again I'm planning on getting rid of the 7D anyway. :)

So what's your beef with the 17-55? I can't find a better specced or reviewed lens for that range and f-stop for a FOVCF body.

Perhaps the 24-105 f/4 as this seems very popular although probably mainly meant for FF bodies though?

It's EF-S so it won't fit on my 1DMk3.
@bwana : What's wrong with the 100 - 400?
Too slow for my needs.

I'd still say the 15-85 plus a fast prime or two (maybe 50, definitely 35). IQ difference negligible vs. 17-55 - and a much better focal range.

I have the 24-105 f/4 L on my 7D (and 50D and 40D before that). It's awesome. But I'm probably going to get the 17-55mm sooner or later too. There just isn't anything like that in that field of view. That is, of course, if Canon doesn't bless us with the mythical 3D and an IS update to the 24-70mm f/2.8.

You mean after all these years raving about this lens you still haven't bought it? :eek:
