512 to 4Meg upgrade $@#$@&

So finally decided to upgrade from 512 to 1024 (4Meg). Was given the usually 7 day story so was pleasantly surprised when I saw my sync speed of 4096 today. Problem is when i run the local speed tests I'm getting a tad over 512 speeds and not even close to 1024. I've spent about an hour listening to stupid telkom music and trying to get an explanation. Three people so far and the best I've got is....we recommend that you downgrade.....What the?? Clearly there is something wrong on there side.....bunch of monkeys!! Anybody else experienced this problem? What's the whole story about your line will sync at the best possible rate. My modem is reporting

Upstream 384 kbps
Downstream 4096 kbps
Noise Margin (Upstream) 12.0 db
Noise Margin (Downstream) 14.0 db
Attenuation (Upstream) 25.0 db
Attenuation (Downstream) 42.5 db

So cant be the line?

Well ADSL has been pretty **** lately, both IS and SAIX.
Probably from the weather~ And affected most ppl not coz of their line, but coz of the lines passed the DSLAM.

So maybe wait a bit, it might improve if it doesnt rain for a few days~

Is it neccessary to upgrade at ISP, they merely provide the band width eg 3 Gb not access speed surely?

Some do, some don't. Just check

If you're only paying for a 512kbps account chances are you're being throttled at that speed.

When I was upgraded to 4mb my DSL still acted like a 512kbps line until Telkom upgraded my accounts to 4mb as well. It only took them a day or two without me asking them so they might still be organising it.

But if your ISP isn't Telkom then give whoever a ring about it.

Supposedly it might be my "profile" on the exchange. So I have to wait for tomorrow for them to change it from 512 to 4096. I can also sync in the meantime at 4096. So maybe they're also letting you sync at 4096, but haven't yet changed your profile? Just a wild guess, I'll find out tomorrow whether they're talking rubbish.

Makes sense. Sync rate only shows the maximum ceiling they're allowing the line to give you - it might take a few days for the account to catch up.

@ Slip - If they told you it might take seven days it might take seven days. Have you tried switching your modem/router off for a few minutes?

hi... had the same issue. line was syncing at 4096 but i was still getting 512 speeds. there's a router or something else to that effect higher up in the connction route than your local exchange that throttles your linespeed. so they have to alter your profile there like radicool says. It took them 45 days to figure it out tho... they were however kind enough to refund me for the 45 days worth of 4m rates i was paying.

**on another note... every 2 or so days some consultant would phone me and ask if they can close the call haha. my response would always be along the lines of "no you cant you havent fixed the problem yet you <insert expletives here>". hmmm... maybe that's why the took so long to fix it... my french vocabulary Merde!

Well they've logged a call now so lets see what happens. Its surprising that none of the help desk know this though. Also tried with two sepearte ADSL accounts (IS and AIX) and get the same speeds.

seems like its necessary, IS had me on 512k, after asking to be moved from 1mb to 4mb

im on 4mb now, but one would swear its like 64k diginet all over again

Yeehaaa . Drove to my exchange down the road yesterday and basically begged one of the technicians to have a look at the line. The guy took down the details and said he would have a look today or Monday.

So this morning I get a call from the guy, he's looking at the line for me. 10 minutes later I sync again, download speed is like 3.5mbps!!

He tested something with his laptop and saw that my speeds were being throttled, and replaced something.

Now I wish I could speak to the original f*#@ed up technician that did the install in the first place, told me it was my wireless causing the problem and that there was nothing he could do, and point out to him what a stupid c*#t he is

radicool - glad to hear you got it sorted out man. Can you perhaps tell me a bit more... I'm starting to think that my 384 is behaving like a 192. I can't seem to get more than 22kb/s on any download, that's surely not right? Also uploading crawls along at like 8kb/s.

I'd like to log something with Telkom but want to be ready for them telling me that I'm on black tar heroin. He didn't get you any specific term for what he fixed?

I was downloading a new graphics driver from an international site earlier, without a download manager, at 425kb/s 30MB in just over a minute.

The technician only said that the "card" that I was connected to was faulty, and that he replaced it. He connected his laptop to it somehow, and could see that it was throttling at 512mbps, so he swapped it out. I don't think the original useless tech who did the install even had a laptop, so a lot depends on the quality of the technician and the kind of tools they entrust him with.

While arguing with them, they were also talking about the fact that it could be a faulty "jumpwire", whatever that is, although obviously it didn't turn out to be the problem in the end.

My boss also has 384 which he says he never gets faster than 11kb/s!
