512k max - per session or per modem

Hi,

Is the 512k downstream speed enforced on the actual ADSL connection, or on the PPPOE session?

I've been experimenting with two concurrent PPPOE sessions, using two separate TelkomDSL accounts, but running over the same ADSL modem.

I can't quite make up my mind if the two connections are limited to 512k between them, or not. I think they are - but every now and then my test seems to manage >512k.

So - does anyone know the answer?

I find, that doing what you are doing, that the speed is still 512Kb, but if you are downloading on each connection, you will only achieve the addition of both, up to the max of 55KBytes/bits. Never could remember which is the right term.
Therefore the conclusion is that it is on the line and not the individual dialup.

Actual connection speed that we are able to connect at here is 2048 kbps/512kbps (Have a look at descent ADSL routers), but even if you connect with 20 accounts on the crappy telkom hardware (as has been done) your speed will not be more than 512kbps. I don't know where they are limiting the speed (at the DSLAM?), but in the UK when you have 512/256 ADSL that is also the speeds that you connect at. Not like here where you use the same hardware and it shows connection speed of 2048/512.
Also in the UK I regularly got DL speeds of 64KB/sec, but here it's never over 55KB/sec, which makes me think telkom is just trying to save a little bit of bandwith. I am close to the exchange and obviously at ideal conditions you have to achieve full speeds.
My point of concern is the way they limit your speed, as obviously they are not doing it correctly at the DSLAM (otherswhise the connection speed should show 512/256). So do they use a software based limiter?...
