I been following this topic.
I have one question, why go through all the trouble of importing a brand(linksys) into South Africa when there are other brands found in SA that supply the same type of equipment.

Rectron stocks a CNet Access Point CWR-800 (Wireless-G)
Should set you back about R1500 to R1600 going through a dealer.

D-Link also has a number of Wireless-G access points for also around R1500.

Now all that has to be done, is to find place in SA that sells Antenna's we require. or willing to custom make them.

If you import the Linksys WAP54G it will cost you more than R700
Import duties, shipping and Vat will quickly push up the price and there will be no local warranty if something goes wrong.

Where as if you go with one of the products supplied by a local supplier, any one of us, can go to our dealer of choice and buy one, and be compitable with current networks running.

Hi All
I Have Been Reading the topic and I am also planing to implement this in Pretoria. I was very pleased to see that icasa have "Droped" the law on WiFi connections in a way that you could do it without a licenes.
I allready have 2 18DBi Panel Antenna`s(made localy by grintech I think) But I am having some trouble in getting the router out of my suplier!
My aim is to set up a WiFi comunity in pretoria providing internet and a local network with Game servers and file sharing for about R100 - R150 for the initial cost and keeping it up and runnig.
Any one intrested in this in the Pretoria east area please SPEAK OUT in this topic!
Thanx![:D]

In my setup using DLink 802.11b+ equipment over nearly 2km, speeds are about 1000k/s (more than enough for gaming, sharing internet etc), with the new Dlink 802.11g+ (108mbps) also on 2.4ghz. I anticipate at least 5000k/s + speeds. The distance can easily be stretched to 5km privided you have line of sight

My dream so to speak is to see wireless cameras watching every street
in Cloud coo-coo land we are all stuck in. We can stop crime and
hijacking. By getting AP for gaming and internet the spillover efect
will be crime surveilance.
So I have three requests:

1) Please register at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sawireless/
so I can send a group post. yahoo solves the SPAM problem because
I will never get your email and you can unsubscribe at any
moment.

2) List your node at www.nodedb.com
The previous posters said they wanted to set up a node
in Pretoria EAst, I can't contact you, the myadsl email facility
does not work and you are nowhere on the www.nodedb.com map.
This is not enough though because the www.nodedb.com email facility
also does not work. Only Yahoo groups will work.
3) Would www.myadsl.co.za please set up a facility where we can exchange node info?

Update.
I have eventually got my router it is a SMC 2804WBR 802.11G. I now only need a couple of affordable antennas if any one knows of a cheap supplier of antennas and/or amplifiers connectors or any other wireless accessories. It would be great.
[:D]
In reply to: Jgoosen I Will keep you all updated on my progress and when the system is up and running. Great to see ppl realising that we must get alternate means of connecting.

Howzit Chubs

I'm from PE as well could you tell me where u are sourcing any of your hardware from cables, connectors, cards, antena's etc.

There is about 14 guys in my area that is interested in getting involved in a wireless community network.

I am looking to purchase one 15db Yagi and just building the others from that design.

Otherwise the other hardware i have no idea about.......

Maverick: I am not 100% sure yet, still looking into it. Would probably import it from someone reputable overseas, or get it brought back with friends coming back over from the UK.

Where abouts are you based, I am in Charlo area, there is an Internet Solutions office relatively close to me but I dont have line of site to them.

The installation above is aimed at catching the twits who are
blasting everybody with Omni-directionals connected to www.rflinx.com
power amplifiers. These folks are stuffing up the spectrum and we
should support Icasa's efforts in clamping down on them.

Love your idea,

That will also serve as a community based projects within the municapilties. Similar to those in Australia and the US.

I believe one could easilly provide the appropriate motivation behind it to the metro council, coupled with bridging the e-divide gap at the same time.

By the way as for ITU rules ICASA's only say over the 802.11a and b bands is to check for interference to others (as in any other frequency emmission).

I will see what I can do in that respect in the new year... Hold thumbs. Who in the Tswane metro is willing to join in a sub-committee to help me drive the above suggestion.

I'm all for this idea of wireless Lans/wans etc, but I'm a bit sceptical about something, how does one standardize IP Addresses to avoid conflicts, for instance, I set up an access point with a DHCP server configured to allocate addresses 192.168.0.* , and someone else links another access point on the 192.168.1.* range, etc .

The same thing happens 50km away, on in independant wireless network, and the idea is that at some point, we meet up, what happens when these 2 networks meet, and try link up, there will be insane ip conflicts on all sides, or the entire structure needs to be redrafted.

And this is a problem, assuming all owners of access points on each network communicate effectively with each other, which I can't see happening when there are 30 different access points, with entire networks linking all the time.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those people that say its impossible, I'm very excited about such a project, if anyone can fill me in on these details, lets get talking.

This whole thread is exciting, sounds like a plan, but i think we need to hear from a group who has this in place and working. I'm in Somerset West and would definitely be interested. Obviously the whole thing hangs on 1 of the group having line of sight to the AP.
