I don't know if this has been done before, but I want to explore the cost of a dialup modem in terms of cost / GB

From the telkom website call cost calculator for local calls:

12 hours Standard Time costs R272.83 incl
12 hours Callmore Time costs R109.33 incl

mon - fri days = R1364.15 / week or 5865.85 / month
mon - thu nights = R437.32 / week or 1880.47 / month
fri - sun weekend = R546.65 / week or 2350.95 / month

total per week = R2348.12
total per month = R10097.27

On a 56k dialup I average download speeds of 4KB / sec or 14.06 MB / hour. Staying connected for a solid month would allow downloads in the region of 10.21 GB. This comes to a cost of approx R988.93 / GB

I estimate the cost per MEG of ADSL at around R282 / MEG for the first 3 GIG therafter R100 / GIG for additional bandwidth.

This is not 100% accurate (or accurate at all because I may have messed the entire formula up) because I have excluded the cost of the relatively minor dialup and line costs, but it does paint a pretty interesting picture.

So much for the 56k rules argument.

Oh well, back to work....

But are you not forgetting that during off-peak times there is Infinitcall. This brings the cost of the 56k option down alot. Instead of the R437.32 / week or 1880.47 / month it now comes to R42 /week (R52 if you include the Infinitcall subscription) and R168 /month (R208 if you include the Infinitcall subscription)

And dialling up during the nights and weekend, you can download way more per month than the 3gigs you get with ADSL

I think you meant R282 / gig

So 56k or ISDN becomes much more viable when you take this into account.

Never thought of that.....

So on weekends only you would have 258 hours of internet time (12x5x4.3) for around R208.00. At 4KB/s that equates to 3.6GB

Cost per GB is then R57 for dialup.

Makes me wonder why I pay more than double for the same amount of bandwidth when all I do is use it in a shorter time.

With my 56k I download at nothing less than 5KB/s and have months where I dowload around 8GB just using InfinitCall..

R300 = 8GB which is all the InfinitCall calls, InfinitCall subscription AND line rental together.

So basically R37.50/GB ... still around 8X more expensive than most other decent countries tho but doesn't afford one daytime browsing which is the one of the two areas DSL is better, the other is of course the higher speed.

Other than that, all I can say is my dialup here costs more than a 512K DSL line in London with no cap :(
