5G Viable for gaming?

Hi Guys,

Has anyone here tried gaming on 5G yet? What is the ping and jitter (variation in ping) like? I am in the 5G coverage currently using a 4mb/s ADSL line. My ping from PTA to JHB is ~35ms and to EU servers in games I'm sitting on +200ms where my friend using Fibre is sitting at ~12ms and ~175ms.

Any feedback would be appreciated before I make the R3500 investment.

Just get it, and then you know you're getting 100x your current speeds, it won't be a waste.

Same question here sir.

The original article from a couple of days ago mentioned the user that tested it CPT got "Fiber like latency" if I remember correctly.

My throughput is just a bonus over my current yet-to-be-disco'd copper. I'm worried about latency, packet loss and jitter etc as I play games like PubG, Apex Legends and now Modern Warfare (which at least has local servers)

My worry is, I have a friend on Telkom LTE couple of blocks away from my house that plays the new Modern Warfare with us. His ping is always high 80's to tripple digits on the local servers, and even spectating him you can see the lag spikes at times.

This has me worried. Would really be awesome if a user that plays FPS games on Rain 5G could give some input!

What about the nat type? Cause with rain 4g uncapped the nat type was always strict

NAT is strict due Carrier grade nat which is a real pity. I game on my 5G connection non stop. Rain 5G has lower latency than Afrihost fibre on Openserve. Local latency is still about 10-20ms though.

Dont most online games just become a pain with nat type 3?

So what are you currently playing? What's your in game ping?

My current ADSL service gives me an average ping to Apex Legends EU servers of 220-240
Fortnite (last time I played) was also 220ish

Playing Modern Warfare locally with 50-60ping.

I'm really keen to see results from users playing FPS games in ZA and EU / UK.

Sorry if this sounds stupid, but how does NAT influence online gaming? And further, is anyone who is using the 5G close to the edge of the coverage? If so how is the experience?

So what are you currently playing? What's your in game ping?

League of legends euw. 183, 185ms

London is about 168ms.

Paladins eu is 175ms

Rocketleague eu is about 180ms

No ping spikes at all. They are about 10ms lower than Afrihost because of better routing. Local Afrihost fibre is lower than rain which is surprising but not much.

Since I STILL don't have fiber in my area, I am thinking of getting this.

Well if you are moving from ADSL or LTE to this it will be an upgrade you will never make a mistake with. Once fibre does go live and you switch fibre unless you taking something fast like 200Mbps fibre line moving from Rain 5G to say a 20Mbps fibre line will feel like a massive downgrade.

My recommendation to anyone on adsl, vdsl, wisp or 20Mbps or slower fibre Rain 5G is a better option for now.

How it will change in the future we don't know because we can't see the future.

Hence the reason I am bombarding some users with questions regarding latency / packet loss etc in games. We only have DSL in my area with no fiber anywhere near. I was surprised to see I am covered for Rain 5G.

I have 2 friends that live a couple of minutes away that have already got their Telkom LTE contracts as their DSL was disconnected, which means mine should be anytime soon.

I've tried a couple of LTE offerings and it was terrible. Ping spikes and lots of disconnects or lag related issues in games like Apex Legends, PubG etc.

@cavedog gave me great feedback earlier. Keen to see what other users experience.

I am in the same situation has you. In my house we have 2 ADSL lines (due to only being able to achieve 2mbps) and I have the Web Africa uncapped LTE. I was also surprised to see that I am in 5G coverage. I just hope my speeds are going to be as good as @cavedog.

I wonder if there is a FUP?

Not sure about the Full FUP but I know they throttle p2p downloads between 5 am to 11 pm
