Have you ever been poor? If not then you have no idea what you're talking about.

Easy to talk about using your money to make more money when you have ample supply.

I grew up poor, and much of my family is still poor. And by poor I mean pretty much living in a terrible tiny flat with my family, months behind on rent, no electricity, fishing in the sea for breakfast and depending on the school's welfare for lunch.

Yes, there are people worse off, but not many. So, now that you know where I'm coming from... yes, I agree with MyDraadloos. I'm able to support myself in decent style now because I learnt from the mistakes of others. No matter what the situation is, my dad and his friends would always find cash somewhere for smokes and a bottle of X braincell-destroying liquor. Think about that. And it's not them alone... pretty much everywhere you go in Point is the same. Or perhaps was, I don't know. I avoid going back there like the plague. People there are interested only in what they can get from you, and what you can get away with. They seem fascinated by why I don't.

I caught a few lucky breaks with school bursaries, otherwise I would have dropped out like my brother. Except for 'lucky breaks', translate 'worked my arse off'. I started working at a salary of R2200 six years ago, and now I live in a nice place in a good neighbourhood, ride my CBR, have food, and can afford to treat my girlfriend. Not a meteoric rise, but I'm happy.

I don't drink. I don't touch drugs. I don't smoke. People claim that these things are demonised, that in moderation they're harmless, but I've seen the harm first-hand. Worst is the state of mind of 'where can I get smokes?' rather than 'how can I make money to support myself?'.

Again: MyDraadloos is right.

Did you actually read the article? The 'minor lunatic' you refer to is a Minister.

Actually know, but apperently neither did you. ;) As far as I can see the article gives no source for the 40-66% claim. Then again my afrikaans really sucks.

Taxation in this country has steadily gotten less since 1994. Does anybody remember the sort of taxes we (in my case my parents paid) in the old SA? Now that was supporting somebody, somehow I don't think it was the poor.

In few years time there will be a totally new leadership structure in this country. The new leaders (Cosatu and their puppet Zuma) all seem to be preaching socialism.

Any talk of raising the tax rate is nonsense and madness.

Try getting the 98% of taxi owners & operators to pay tax then we could all go on permanent holiday.

Or even better sort out the corruption and the whole country would be better off...

Already 43 705 government officials have been investigated for fraudulently obtaining grants and at one stage the department estimated that it lost about R1,5-billion annually by paying out grants to those who did not qualify for them.
400 000 probed for social security fraud Nov 21 06

So much for our wonderful Finance Minister, he seems incapable of leveraging our tax base (I wonder why?)

The only way to get taxi driver to pay tax is if you a single public transport ticketing system. It is impossible to effectively police a cash based sector like taxis...

Unfortunatly this being SA any attempts to introduce this system will probably result in the country being being burnt to the ground.

Same would apply to sexworkers industry, I have my doubts about the ticketing system in this case.

if we didnt have uneducated bastards at the top of the chain we wouldnt have these sh#tty suggestions even made.

But now, they are letting ppl with no education run the country... no wonder everything is falling apart

2010 will soon be lost, the negative articles are increasing and the source is not from SA anymore but from aboard...

all i can say, will you employ an x-criminal with no education to run your company

the gvt is now employing x-criminal with no education to RUIN your country

Uneducated bastards? http://www.info.gov.za/leaders/ministers/index.html
Go look in each profile under Academic Qualifications
That is not what he said. He is referring to the "43 705 government officials" who have defrauded the country.

He also may be referring to this (on another thread.)

For example, a recent government survey found that 4 out of 231 local municipalities have no civil engineers, technologists or technicians, 45 have only one civil technician, and 186 local municipalities have no civil engineers whatsoever. According to the government’s own statistics, as many as thirty-six percent of managers have a matric with a diploma or less and one municipal manager does not even have a matric qualification.

And Angelo: what is the basis of your comment?

Way to go Leitmotif,

If only we had more people like you in the world, it would be much better.:)

Not harmless. There is always risk. Nothing wrong with a bit of risk.

I grew up poor, but I would never have begrudged my father and mother their occasional drink. Why should they be denied a little of one of life's pleasures? Afterall they effectively gave up their lives for their children.
