AFAIK there are no more joint bank accounts available from SA banks.

What worked for us, initially each of us having our own account and then we had a shared account that covered our shared expenses which each one paid into equally. But in the last few years, we divided financial responsibilities up according to each spouse's means and cover that from our respective accounts. We both have access to each other's accounts also.

A joint account will get locked when one spouse dies. It's thus important to keep some money in separate accounts if you want a main joint account.

I'm also curious about this. The wife and I use a "joint" account basically by sharing the card. But it's in my name. I just make sure to have another account in her name in order that if I do kick the proverbial, then she has access to some funds.

Watson, I think you should put down the glass and go Google what the phrase "joint bank account" means. Not the nonsense you're referring to about making somebody a signatory on your account - which is actually what you're referring to.
Signature on my account? Haven't signed for something in ages.
